You can loop a video for YouTube Live by playing it repeatedly in VLC and using a YouTube-compatible encoder to send that playback to YouTube. VLC is the player in this setup—not an encoder that YouTube’s current official guide identifies as verified. Test the complete video-and-audio path and check the YouTube preview before starting a public stream.
What you need
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says first-time live activation can take time, so enable it before the day of your broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips explain the eligibility checks.
- A video file that plays in VLC, a computer that can remain on while streaming, and a YouTube-compatible encoder capable of capturing VLC playback.
- A reliable upload connection with enough capacity for the encoder settings you choose.
YouTube’s general encoder workflow applies in India; the reviewed guidance does not establish a separate India-only procedure. Your ISP, channel status, and upload stability still depend on your specific location and account.
Loop the video and connect it to YouTube Live
- Prepare your channel. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and the Live Control Room. Confirm live streaming is enabled. If this is your first livestream, activate the feature ahead of time; YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled broadcast. YouTube live-streaming tips
- Open and test the file in VLC. Load the video and enable the repeat or loop control available in your installed VLC version. Labels and controls can vary by version and operating system, so use the control shown in your own VLC rather than relying on a universal menu path. Let the video reach its end and confirm it restarts. Check whether the transition creates a visible or audible jump.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a stream or select an existing one. Copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as private: it authorizes an encoder to send content to your channel. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide if you need help locating the connection details.
- Configure an encoder. Use a YouTube-compatible software or hardware encoder to capture VLC’s playback, then enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube documents this encoder workflow but does not identify VLC itself as a verified encoder; do not assume VLC alone can send a supported live feed.
- Choose settings and test. Set the encoder to a format and bitrate suitable for your file and upload connection. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check picture, sound, and the loop transition before starting the YouTube broadcast. A test can be set to unlisted. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
- End the broadcast cleanly. End the stream in YouTube or Live Control Room as appropriate, then stop the encoder from sending content. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not rely on that archive rule for longer broadcasts.
Encoder settings: resolution, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for general ingestion. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Use only combinations your encoder supports, and check the current YouTube encoder settings guidance when choosing a codec and resolution.
| Example H.264 setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that your connection can sustain the stream. Choose a bitrate your upload can support consistently, leave bandwidth headroom, and test using the same video and audio conditions planned for the broadcast. An unstable upload can interrupt the feed. The figures and settings above reflect YouTube Help guidance current as accessed October 3, 2026.

Copyright and stream checks
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video and its audio. A video being prerecorded, publicly available, or playable in VLC does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules for your content; the encoder workflow does not exempt a stream from those rules.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public.
- Check audio as well as picture, including the sound at the loop point.
- Monitor stream health during the broadcast and investigate warnings or interruptions promptly.
- Keep the stream key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Local VLC setup or a cloud service?
| Approach | What runs the video | Computer at the stream location | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC plus encoder | VLC loops the file; an encoder captures and sends it. | Must remain on with the connection active. | A stream you can supervise locally and stop when needed. |
| StreamNeo | Uploaded videos or playlists loop from the cloud to YouTube. | No home computer needs to stay on. | A YouTube stream intended to keep running without a local playback machine. |
YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. Its current features, pricing, and partner availability are not established here, so check the service directly before relying on it.

Troubleshooting
No preview appears in Live Control Room
- Check that the encoder is running and has the correct YouTube stream URL and current stream key.
- Confirm the channel can go live and the selected stream is the one you intend to use.
- Check the encoder’s connection and firewall/network access, then restart the encoder and allow time for the preview to appear.
The video or sound stops at the end of the file
- Confirm VLC’s repeat control is enabled and test the restart before sending the feed.
- Make sure the encoder captures VLC continuously rather than a one-time file playback source that ends.
- Check that the file itself plays through to completion in VLC without an error.
The stream buffers or drops
- Lower the encoder bitrate or resolution to a level the location’s upload connection can sustain, then retest.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health information to distinguish a connection issue from an encoder or source issue.
- Leave upload headroom instead of setting the stream at the maximum observed connection speed.
The loop has a jump or silence
- Inspect the last and first frames and audio segments in the source file; a repeat control cannot smooth an edit that is already discontinuous.
- Try a different playback or encoder setting if the encoder introduces a gap, and test the full transition in the YouTube preview.
The stream key no longer works
- Verify that you copied the key for the stream selected in Live Control Room.
- If the key was exposed or reset in YouTube Studio, update the encoder with the current key and test again.
