To keep Dota 2 match replays live on YouTube, play the permitted replay or spectator view on a computer, capture it with an encoder such as OBS, and send that encoder to a YouTube Live event. This is a do-it-yourself setup: the game client and computer must keep running, and someone needs to monitor interruptions. First check the replay’s rights and any tournament rules; a working stream key does not grant permission to rebroadcast event footage.

Check rights and tournament rules before you set up

For a Dota 2 Community Stream, Valve’s policy says the content must be based exclusively on DotaTV and content you created or licensed. It also says operator camera work and broadcast audio require the event operator’s authorization, and streamers must follow event-specific requirements. A replay being viewable in Dota 2 does not by itself establish that every associated broadcast element is cleared for your stream.

Check the tournament operator’s current requirements before using an event replay. If the requirements are unclear, Valve’s FAQ suggests contacting the operator at least two weeks in advance; treat that as guidance, not a universal formal deadline. If the operator has published no requirements, Valve’s policy still requires a Community Stream to be non-commercial. Valve’s general video policy allows monetization of Valve game videos through the YouTube Partner Program and similar programs, but that general permission does not override event rules or third-party rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material, including another copyrighted broadcast. It may show a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate a stream, and apply Content ID claims to an archived stream. YouTube says a license alone may not prevent interruption: if you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist.

What you need

  • A Dota 2-capable computer that can play the replay and encode video at the same time. Steam’s listed minimum requirements describe the game, not reliable simultaneous streaming performance. Test the actual computer under load rather than treating minimum requirements as a streaming recommendation.
  • A replay or spectator view that is available in your current Dota 2 client, with rights cleared for the use you intend.
  • An encoder such as OBS. YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source recording and streaming software. A dedicated hardware encoder is another option; the YouTube connection does not make one mandatory.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube’s guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • A stable network connection, a private stream key, and a person or operational plan to respond if the game, encoder, network, or YouTube stream stops.

Set up the Dota 2 replay stream

  1. Confirm the content and event rules. Identify the replay source and check Valve’s Dota 2 Community Stream Policy and the tournament operator’s requirements. Do not assume event broadcast audio, camera work, or other third-party material is reusable. Add commentary or graphics only if you have the necessary rights and they comply with the event rules.
  2. Check livestream access in YouTube Studio. Enable livestreaming for the channel and allow time for first-time activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours. For a planned event, YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours beforehand and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
  3. Create or schedule a YouTube Live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Depending on the encoder, connect through its direct YouTube option or enter the URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on stream or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  4. Set up the encoder source. Open the replay or spectator view in Dota 2, then add a game capture or other suitable capture source in OBS. Choose the game window or display deliberately, check that the correct image appears in the preview, and avoid exposing desktop notifications or private information. Configure resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the selected output and the limits of your tested system; the exact recommended values can change, so do not rely on an old preset.
  5. Check audio and preview. Confirm that the intended game audio and any authorized microphone audio are present, meters are active, and levels are not clipping. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview before making the event public. Verify the stream from its watch page and on a phone as well as on the streaming computer.
  6. Run a test before committing to a continuous broadcast. An unlisted test can help check picture, sound, network stability, and access to the watch page without announcing a public run. If you use a backup encoder, test the failover rather than assuming it will work. YouTube recommends continued monitoring of audio and video, channel and watch-page access, and archive files.
  7. Supervise the stream. Keep an operator available to respond to copyright notices, encoder failures, network interruptions, and the replay ending. A replay or match view is not necessarily an endless source: plan how the next permitted replay will be selected and started. The official guidance reviewed does not establish a current client click path for finding or downloading replays, a replay retention period, or a supported way to loop them continuously. Check the controls and replay availability in your current Dota 2 client rather than relying on an assumed menu path or file workflow.

Plan for interruption and archive limits

An always-on stream is an operating process, not a guarantee that one event will stay live indefinitely. YouTube recommends monitoring the broadcast and checking archives. Its guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish the same archive outcome for a 24-hour broadcast. If you need a recording, make a separate local recording where practical and check that the file is complete after the run.

  • Copyright alert or placeholder: pause or end the broadcast if needed, identify the flagged material, and remove it unless you have the necessary permission. For licensed third-party content, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
  • No image in the YouTube preview: check that Dota 2 is open on the intended replay, the capture source points to the correct game window or display, and the encoder is sending to the event shown in Studio.
  • Image but no audio: check the selected desktop/game audio source, the relevant mixer meters, and whether the source is muted. Recheck the live preview before continuing.
  • Stream drops or becomes unstable: check encoder status and network connection, then reconnect using the correct event and key. If you have a backup encoder, switch only according to a failover plan you have tested.
  • Replay ends or becomes unavailable: stop or transition only to another replay you are allowed to use. The reviewed official guidance does not establish a supported Dota 2 replay-looping method or replay availability window.
  • Stream runs but viewers cannot access it: verify the event’s visibility and watch page in YouTube Studio, then test access from another device or account.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo can keep an uploaded video playing as a YouTube stream, but it does not run the Dota 2 game client or fetch and loop a match replay for you. You need a permitted video file to upload; this does not clear its rights or bypass Valve’s event rules.
