How to Restart OBS Automatically After a Crash on a YouTube Stream in India

OBS cannot relaunch itself after a process crash. Learn the difference between connection reconnects, OS-level process supervision, and YouTube’s Auto-start controls.

OBS cannot restart itself after its process crashes. Its built-in Automatic Reconnect is for a dropped connection while OBS is still running. To relaunch OBS after a crash, you need a separate process supervisor configured for the computer’s operating system. YouTube’s Auto-start setting may control what happens when encoder data reaches YouTube, but it does not reopen OBS.

The distinction matters for Indian creators just as it does elsewhere: the official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not identify any India-specific restart behavior. Because the right supervisor depends on whether the computer runs Windows, macOS, or Linux, and that information is not specified, this guide explains what to configure and verify without guessing at OS-specific commands.

First identify what actually failed

“The stream stopped” can describe three different failures. Each is controlled by a different component, so first check whether OBS is still open and functioning.

Failure What is still running? Relevant control
Network connection to YouTube dropped OBS is still running OBS Automatic Reconnect
OBS application crashed or exited The OBS process is no longer running An external, OS-level process supervisor that detects the exit and starts OBS again
YouTube broadcast behavior when encoder data starts or stops YouTube receives or stops receiving encoder data YouTube Live Control Room’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings

OBS’s overview guide describes Automatic Reconnect as a connection-recovery option; it does not describe it as a way to relaunch a crashed OBS process. YouTube’s live stream settings likewise describe Auto-start and Auto-stop as controls for starting or stopping streaming from the encoder, not for restarting the encoder application.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up recovery for the failure you have

If OBS remains open but loses its connection

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and locate Automatic Reconnect. Check that it is enabled and review its retry settings.
  2. Watch OBS and YouTube’s stream health while the connection recovers. Automatic Reconnect addresses the connection while OBS remains open; it is not a process restart.
  3. Test with the same sort of audio and video activity you expect during the real stream. OBS recommends testing before the first live stream, and YouTube recommends testing under similar conditions and choosing quality your internet connection can sustain.

The OBS guide does not establish that reconnecting will preserve the same YouTube broadcast, video URL, or recording continuity in every interruption scenario. Do not rely on those outcomes without testing your own setup.

If the OBS process crashes

  1. Choose a process supervisor or equivalent automation for the computer’s operating system. It must detect that OBS has exited and launch OBS again; an in-app reconnect option cannot do this after the app is gone.
  2. Configure and test the supervisor on the host computer before depending on it for a live event. The precise service, scheduler, or script differs by OS, and the sources cited here do not substantiate exact Windows, macOS, or Linux setup instructions.
  3. Decide whether you need recovery only after OBS exits, or also after the computer itself reboots. Those are separate recovery cases; the behavior and setup for reboot recovery are not established here.
  4. Run a controlled test: start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream, confirm OBS is publishing, simulate the intended failure safely, and verify that the supervisor restarts OBS and that the encoder feed returns. Check YouTube’s Live Control Room and stream health rather than assuming a relaunch means the broadcast recovered as intended.

Keep your YouTube stream key private. YouTube describes it as the credential/address an encoder uses to send a feed for acceptance; do not expose it in screenshots, logs, or scripts. If your restart arrangement requires OBS to reconnect to YouTube, verify the encoder’s stream configuration securely before the test.

Check YouTube’s encoder start behavior

  1. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop selections if your intended behavior depends on YouTube responding when encoder data starts or stops.
  2. When reusing stream settings, verify these selections: YouTube says the settings can be copied along with the other stream settings.
  3. Test whether the broadcast behaves as intended when encoder data stops and resumes. These platform controls do not launch a crashed OBS process, and the reviewed guidance does not guarantee that a restarted encoder will resume the same broadcast or URL.

Test stream quality and diagnose a failed recovery

Test with audio and video activity similar to the planned event. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and selecting a quality that the available outbound connection can reliably support. Its encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video codec options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Treat these as encoder-setting guidance, not as requirements for an OS process supervisor.

If the feed does not start or looks unhealthy after a restart, work through these checks:

  • Outbound connection: Assess whether the host’s upload connection is stable enough for the selected stream quality.
  • Stream key: If YouTube’s start error points to the key, verify the configured key in the encoder. Treat it as a secret.
  • Resource pressure: If encoding performance is poor, OBS identifies GPU overload or resource contention as possible issues. Reduce workload and retest; this is a troubleshooting possibility, not proof that resource pressure caused a particular crash.
  • Software version: YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating the encoder. Check for an available OBS update and retest.

For the full platform-side checklist, see YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guide. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting covers resource and performance issues. Neither replaces testing the supervisor’s actual restart behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than recovering a camera-based OBS production, StreamNeo is a different approach: it loops uploaded recordings from the cloud, so your computer and home internet connection do not have to stay on. It does not restart OBS or stream from a camera.
