Use a rights-cleared playlist, test the full chain before announcing the broadcast, and monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room. A Mumbai server is an option, not a guarantee of a reliable route to YouTube.
What you need before you start
- A Linux VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen video bitrate. The right CPU and memory depend on the source resolution and codec, and on whether FFmpeg must re-encode. A Mumbai location alone does not establish that the server can deliver uninterrupted video to YouTube.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus a video file or playlist that you have tested for playback and compatibility.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the platform workflow.
- Permission to use every part of the recording, including narration, music, images and other material, for the whole broadcast.
No specific VPS size or Mumbai provider can be recommended from the available provider-neutral evidence: performance depends on the media, encoding work and sustained network route.
Set up the YouTube Live encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream following YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS server URL when FFmpeg and your configuration support it. YouTube documents port 443 for RTMPS ingestion; RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, repository or other location that others can access.
Prepare and loop the playlist with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats an input indefinitely. Its -re option reads at the input’s native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), pacing file playback in real time for a live output. Read the FFmpeg documentation and check the installed build’s options before configuring the encoder: option placement and encoding choices depend on the actual media and FFmpeg build.
For a single file, the central pattern is to put the input-loop and real-time pacing options before the input, then specify video/audio handling and the YouTube output URL after it. The following is a pattern, not a ready-to-run command: replace the input and output values, and choose codecs and encoding settings that match the file and YouTube’s current requirements.

For a playlist, test the complete sequence and how playback transitions between files before broadcasting; a looping option applied to one input should not be assumed to assemble or sequence a multi-file playlist for you.
Choose whether to copy or re-encode
Whether the source can be sent without re-encoding depends on its codecs, container and stream compatibility. If it is incompatible or you need different output settings, FFmpeg must encode it, which increases CPU demand. Inspect the actual file and test the full command on the selected VPS rather than assuming a particular machine can handle a given resolution.

Start the broadcast and verify it
- Start FFmpeg on the VPS using the tested configuration.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check stream health and confirm that both picture and sound play as expected before directing viewers to the broadcast.
- Monitor the VPS process and network during the stream. A process that starts successfully is not proof that the video will continue reaching YouTube.
Run an end-to-end test before the public start time. Confirm that the playlist repeats as intended, audio remains present, and the server can sustain the output. Plan how you will restart FFmpeg and reconnect the broadcast if either the process or the connection stops.
Plan around archives and copyright checks
Keep replays under YouTube’s documented archive threshold
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a replay, end and restart the broadcast before it reaches that threshold, and retain a separate source copy. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.

Clear every component of the recording
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can replace the picture with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the applicable permissions and allowlisting before going live. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright.
Troubleshoot common failures

Run it yourself or use a cloud service
A VPS and FFmpeg give you direct control over the process, but you are responsible for the server, media compatibility, monitoring and recovery. A cloud looping service shifts the always-on playback off your own machine. Compare the operational responsibilities and confirm that the service’s workflow suits your stream-key handling and content.
