There is no universal electricity cost for keeping a YouTube stream live. Measure the average wall-power draw of the equipment that will actually stay on, multiply it by the hours it runs, then multiply by your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour. Running several independent streams from one PC can increase upload and encoding demands, but it does not add a fixed, predictable electricity cost per channel.
What changes when you stream to one channel or several?
A continuous feed for one channel uses one configured outgoing feed. Each independent channel needs its own YouTube live stream resource and outgoing feed. The PC’s added electricity use depends on its hardware and actual workload, so the only sound comparison is to measure the complete setup in both configurations.
YouTube documents a separate case in which one stream can be bound to multiple simultaneous broadcasts on the same channel when they use the same underlying source content. For example, a 24/7 feed and an interview that is a subset of that feed may share a stream. How to calculate the electricity cost
Use this formula:
energy cost = (average wall watts Ă· 1,000) Ă— operating hours Ă— electricity price per kWh

Watts describe power at a moment; kilowatt-hours (kWh) measure energy used over time. Utilities generally bill electricity in kWh, as explained by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A continuous 365-day year is 8,760 hours. Use the rate on your own bill or tariff; fixed charges, demand charges, taxes, and time-of-use pricing can make the final bill differ from this energy-only estimate.
Measure the equipment that will stay on
- List the equipment that will remain powered during the stream: the PC, any separate encoder, network equipment, and a monitor or display only if it will stay on.
- Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure wall draw while the setup is performing the actual streaming workload. A PC power supply’s rated capacity and a processor’s thermal design power are not measurements of whole-system wall draw.
- Repeat the measurement for each configuration you want to compare, such as one feed and multiple independent feeds. Keep the equipment boundary and workload as consistent as practical.
- Convert the measured watts to kW by dividing by 1,000, multiply by the planned operating hours, then multiply by your applicable rate per kWh.
Illustrative calculation, not a typical-PC estimate
If a setup drew a constant 100 W for 730 hours, it would use 73 kWh. At an assumed rate of $0.15/kWh, the energy charge would be $10.95 for that period. Both the power draw and rate are assumptions for arithmetic illustration, not a claim about typical streaming hardware or a current price in any particular location.

Multiple feeds: plan upload and encoding separately
Electricity, upload capacity, and encoding workload are different constraints. YouTube recommends these H.264 ingestion bitrates among its listed options: 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are recommended stream settings, not estimates of electricity consumption. The full recommendations and other options are in YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.
For independent outgoing feeds, add the configured bitrate of each feed to estimate aggregate upload use, then leave headroom for connection variation. That total is arithmetic based on the settings you choose, not a YouTube guarantee about what a particular home connection can sustain. Test the connection under the intended workload.

YouTube says it transcodes a submitted live stream into different output formats for viewers, so creators do not need to send a separate bitrate ladder for every viewer resolution. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 encoder options, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). Codec, resolution, frame rate, and the number of simultaneous independent outputs can affect encoder workload. YouTube’s published bitrate guidance does not specify a universal CPU/GPU requirement or power draw for each concurrent feed.
