How to Switch Between Game VODs in a Continuous YouTube Livestream

Keep one YouTube broadcast live while your encoder advances from one prerecorded game VOD to the next. Learn the setup, long-stream limits and common fixes.

You can switch between prerecorded game VODs without ending a YouTube livestream: keep the same broadcast running and change the video source in the encoder sending the feed. YouTube treats the incoming stream and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate resources, so changing the encoder’s picture and sound does not by itself create a new broadcast. The exact playlist and source-switch controls depend on your encoder.

How the switch works

The encoder sends YouTube a continuous feed using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s API describes a broadcast as “a distinct YouTube video” and a stream as the incoming feed bound to that broadcast. That distinction lets the encoder change what viewers see while the same YouTube event remains live. Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams covers the relationship.

In practice, the VOD files or playlist are managed in your encoder, not by a universal YouTube playlist-switch control. YouTube documents encoder setup and connection, but not one verified set of button-by-button playlist steps for every encoder or version. YouTube’s encoder guide lists examples, including OBS, software encoders and cloud encoding services; it does not establish that every listed option supports scheduled VOD playlists.

Set up a continuous VOD feed

  1. Choose an encoder. Use software or a cloud encoder that can send a continuous feed to YouTube and can load or advance the prerecorded files you want to play. Check its current documentation for playlist behavior, transitions, local recording and operating-system compatibility; controls vary by product and version.
  2. Prepare the YouTube event. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the livestream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s connection settings. YouTube describes the stream key as a credential: treat it like a password and do not share it publicly. See Manage live stream settings.
  3. Load and order the VODs in the encoder. Add the files as video or media sources, or use the encoder’s playlist feature if it has one. Set the intended sequence and decide whether to use a short slate or transition scene between files. That slate is optional production advice, not a YouTube feature.
  4. Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Before presenting the event as live, verify the correct image and audio in Live Control Room and check that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking that local archive files are growing. Its livestreaming tips provide a preflight checklist.
  5. Switch sources while the broadcast stays live. Advance the encoder’s playlist or select the next VOD source. Confirm that the new file’s video and audio reach the YouTube preview. Keep the same broadcast and encoder connection running; ending the event is not required merely to change the source.
  6. Record a local backup. Enable local recording if your encoder supports it, and periodically confirm that the file is being written and growing. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive as a backup.

Choose the workflow that fits your channel

Workflow What it offers What to verify
Local software encoder You control local media sources and the outgoing feed. YouTube lists software encoders, including OBS. Playlist or source-switch support, transition controls, local recording, operating-system compatibility and how much manual monitoring the setup needs.
Cloud or managed encoder The encoding service runs remotely. YouTube lists services such as AWS Elemental MediaLive and a continuous-stream camera service. Whether prerecorded-file scheduling is supported, automation and recovery behavior, setup complexity and cost. YouTube’s list does not establish that every service can schedule game VOD playlists or provide comparable pricing.

YouTube says you do not need expensive equipment to get started. A capture card is relevant only if your particular input setup requires one; it is not necessary simply to switch between prerecorded files. See YouTube’s livestreaming getting-started guidance.

Plan around long-stream archive and DVR limits

YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours in the automatic archive. Viewer DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for livestreams over 12 hours. If a reliable YouTube archive or rewind matters, schedule shorter sessions and check the resulting archive rather than assuming an all-day broadcast will be preserved. See Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.

Use VODs you are allowed to rebroadcast

YouTube livestreams must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A game recording, soundtrack or previously recorded VOD is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast just because it is already on your channel. Rights depend on the relevant game, music, footage and permissions; confirm that you have the necessary rights before looping or switching among recordings. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and policy guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • The YouTube broadcast ends when you change clips: Check whether you are stopping the encoder or ending the event in Live Control Room instead of switching the encoder’s active source. Test a source change before a public session.
  • The preview stays on the old VOD: Confirm that the encoder actually advanced the playlist or selected the intended source, and that the new file is available and playing locally. Verify the result in YouTube’s preview before relying on it.
  • Viewers hear no audio or the wrong audio: Check the new source’s audio routing and level in the encoder, then listen to the Live Control Room preview. A working picture does not confirm that the audio source changed correctly.
  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Confirm that the encoder is using the selected event’s stream URL and stream key. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder with the new key.
  • The archive or rewind is missing after a long session: A stream over 12 hours may not be archived automatically, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Break the program into shorter sessions if these features are important.
  • A VOD triggers a rights concern: Pause the rebroadcast and review the permissions for the game footage, soundtrack and recording. A previous upload does not itself prove that continuous livestream rebroadcast is permitted.
