AWS cost depends on the EC2 instance, operating system, storage and billable data transfer; home cost depends on the PC’s measured power use and the household’s applicable electricity charges. Compare those inputs for the same stream settings and roughly 730 runtime hours, then weigh reliability and recovery separately.
What to include in a fair monthly comparison
Compare the cost of sending the same stream to YouTube—not the cost of delivering it to viewers. YouTube handles viewer playback delivery, so audience size is not a multiplier for an encoder’s upload traffic to YouTube.

For the AWS side, use a full-month planning estimate of about 730 hours for a continuously running instance. For the home side, measure power while the PC is doing the actual encoding. Exclude costs that do not change because of the stream; include any equipment or internet upgrades only if you actually need them, and show them separately.
How to estimate AWS Mumbai cost
- Choose the exact instance and operating system. Enter the intended EC2 instance type and OS in the AWS Pricing Calculator, selecting the Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region. An instance price alone is not the monthly total.
- Set runtime. Estimate about 730 hours for a 24/7 planning month, adjusting if your billing period or expected schedule differs.
- Add attached and related services. Include storage, address-related charges, or other AWS services used by your design. Check the current calculator result and billing terms rather than assuming a particular setup has no additional charges.
- Estimate data transfer out. Use the encoder’s outgoing stream bitrate and planned runtime to estimate the traffic sent from AWS to YouTube. Allow for bitrate variation and protocol overhead.
- Check eligibility and account terms. AWS says eligible customers receive 100 GB of monthly internet data transfer out free across AWS services and regions, subject to exclusions and terms. Verify that the allowance applies to your account and workload, and account for any discounts or commitments before treating a calculator estimate as your expected bill.
Without the actual instance, OS, transfer estimate and attached services, a fixed AWS monthly figure would be misleading. AWS examples for managed live-stream encoding, packaging and distribution are a different architecture and cost model; they are not a fair price proxy for an EC2 encoder sending a stream to YouTube.

Estimate the stream’s AWS upload traffic
The encoder bitrate determines the approximate amount of data sent to YouTube. A useful first estimate is:
decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × runtime hours × 0.45
This uses the conversion from megabits per second to decimal gigabytes over time; it is an approximation, not a billing quote. Add allowance for protocol overhead and bitrate variation. For example, YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. At those bitrates, the approximate payloads for a 730-hour month are about 1,643 GB and 986 GB respectively, before overhead. These are upload volumes from the encoder to YouTube—not viewer-delivery traffic.

Do not multiply these figures by the number of viewers. AWS distribution costs in managed streaming examples include delivery to audiences and should not be added to this EC2-to-YouTube encoder comparison.

- Measure average wall draw. Measure the complete PC’s power at the wall while it is encoding the intended stream. Do not substitute the power supply’s rated capacity or a component’s TDP: neither tells you the PC’s actual average draw.
- Calculate monthly energy. Use the measured average watts and the hours the PC runs:
monthly kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours running
- Apply your marginal household rate. Multiply the calculated kWh by the rate and bill components that actually change when you run the PC: applicable energy charge, taxes, duties, fuel adjustments or slab effects.
- Keep one-time or indirect costs distinct. If the stream requires a new device, UPS, cooling or internet upgrade, show that separately instead of silently folding it into the monthly electricity estimate.
An MSEDCL bill example from November 2025 lists a residential energy-charge line of ₹7.34. That is one line on one example bill, not a current universal tariff or a complete marginal rate for every home in India. Use your own distributor, bill and tariff conditions.

Use matching YouTube encoder settings
Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and schedule for both cost estimates; otherwise the comparison is not like for like. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 and AV1 codec choices. For an H.264 setup, YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its published examples include:

These are recommended ingest settings, not guaranteed requirements for every video or connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption. Its streaming tips advise 20% upload headroom, so size a home connection above the target stream bitrate and test it under realistic conditions, including other household network use. Test the encoder and watch YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a successful start proves a stable 24/7 setup.

A 24/7 channel needs an interruption plan whichever host you choose. At home, power, router or ISP problems can stop an encoder; on AWS, instance or ingest problems still require monitoring and a recovery plan. Neither option guarantees an uninterrupted stream just because it is running continuously.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For an ongoing channel, plan how you will end and restart stream sessions and handle archives; do not assume a single live session can run indefinitely or that every part of a continuous broadcast will be archived as one recording.
Choose based on cost and operational responsibility
- AWS may suit you if you need a remotely hosted encoder and can size the instance, estimate data transfer and manage its monitoring and recovery. Check actual encoder load; an unnecessarily large instance can make cloud hosting more expensive without improving the stream.
- A home PC may suit you if you already have suitable hardware and a stable connection, and its measured incremental energy cost is acceptable. Account for the fact that your local power, router, ISP upload and computer all need to remain available.
- Neither estimate is complete on its own. Compare direct monthly cash costs, then make a separate decision about reliability, maintenance and recovery. The cost of outages, hardware wear, cooling and connectivity varies by household and is not established by a generic tariff or instance estimate.

Common estimation mistakes
- Comparing an EC2 headline rate with a full home bill: add AWS transfer and attached services, and compare only the home electricity cost that changes because of streaming.
- Using the PC’s power-supply rating: measure average wall draw during the actual encode instead.
- Counting audience playback as AWS encoder traffic: the encoder sends one ingest stream to YouTube; audience delivery is a separate system.
- Assuming the transfer allowance applies automatically: check AWS’s current eligibility, exclusions and account terms before subtracting the stated 100 GB monthly allowance.
- Ignoring upload headroom or session handling: test the connection and encoder, monitor stream health, and plan how sessions and archives will be managed.
