A long pause around a YouTube gaming replay does not point to one confirmed cause. First work out whether you mean a gap inside one archived VOD, time between two separate VODs, or a pause while rewinding a stream that is still live. These are different situations: YouTube’s guidance explains live buffering, DVR and archive capture, but does not document a standard “delay between VOD segments.”
First identify where the delay happens
- Inside one archived replay: The video itself may contain a pause or missing portion, or playback may be stalling on your device. Compare the same point on another device and connection.
- Between separate VOD entries: Check whether you are moving from one published video to another. YouTube’s archive guidance describes whether a livestream can be captured; it does not establish a standard wait time between separate VODs.
- While rewinding a stream that is still live: This is a DVR question. DVR controls pausing and seeking during a live stream, and its limits depend in part on stream length and playback device.
Keep the distinction in mind: YouTube defines live-stream latency as the delay between a camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. That capture-to-viewer delay is not the same as a pause inside an already published replay. YouTube’s live latency guidance also notes that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can mean more buffering.
Check whether the problem follows your app, device, or connection
- Replay the affected point on another supported device. If possible, compare the YouTube app with youtube.com in a browser. Note whether the pause occurs at the same timestamp.
- Switch networks. Try another internet connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, if available. A change in behavior helps isolate a network or route issue, but does not prove the original cause.
- Refresh the app or browser. Close and reopen YouTube. On a mobile device, clear the YouTube app cache if the option is available in the device settings.
- Restart or update the device. Check for updates to the operating system and YouTube app, then test again.
- Record what changes. Note the video URL, timestamp, device, app or browser, network, and whether the issue reproduces elsewhere. This makes it easier to distinguish a single playback setup from a problem that follows the video.
These are YouTube’s general playback-isolation suggestions, not a guaranteed fix for a particular replay gap. See Google’s troubleshooting steps for streaming and video issues.
If the pause happens during live DVR rewind
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. It is a live viewing feature, not a setting that repairs an archived VOD. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Apple TV, AirPlay, and older versions of the YouTube app have lower limits. If DVR is disabled, viewers cannot seek back while the stream is live, though a recording may still be available afterward. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

To narrow down a live-seeking issue, check whether the stream is still live, how long it has been running, and whether seeking behaves differently on another supported device. Do not assume a long pause in an archive is caused by DVR.
If the gap is in an archived livestream
For creators, check the stream’s total duration and compare the YouTube replay with any local recording. YouTube says it can automatically archive livestreams shorter than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is an archive-capture boundary, not a published estimate for how long processing takes or an explanation for a pause between portions. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube’s creator tips recommend confirming that a local archive file is growing, checking the file’s integrity, verifying that the event is accessible through channel or watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality. These checks can help establish whether the missing or paused material is also absent from the creator’s recording. See YouTube live streaming tips.
What a local recording can tell you
- If the same gap appears in the local file, it was present in that recording too; a viewer-side playback test alone cannot explain why.
- If the local file plays continuously but the YouTube replay does not, that comparison narrows the issue to the uploaded replay or its playback path, but it does not identify a specific YouTube processing cause.
- If there is no complete local recording, the original missing section may not be recoverable from the information available to the viewer.
Why stream latency and HLS are not automatic explanations
Creators can choose live latency settings based on interaction and buffering trade-offs. YouTube positions normal latency for non-interactive streams, low latency for limited interaction, and ultra-low latency for real-time conversation. Its guidance describes typical latency for most viewers as less than 10 seconds on low-latency streams and less than 5 seconds on ultra-low-latency streams; these are live latency figures, not expected gaps in VOD replays. Lower latency can reduce the read-ahead buffer, while network congestion can delay a stream even when a connection can sustain its average bitrate. See YouTube’s explanation of live latency.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest as sending video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream, and says HLS has higher latency. Its HLS instructions specify segment durations from 1 to 4 seconds, with shorter durations producing lower latency. That describes live ingest behavior; it does not show that HLS was used for a particular gaming stream or explain a long pause between archived VOD portions. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
When to report the issue
If the same pause occurs at the same point on more than one device and connection, report the specific video and timestamp through YouTube’s available feedback or support options. Include whether it is a live DVR seek or an archived replay, the stream’s approximate length, and whether the creator’s local file has the same gap. YouTube’s public guidance does not state a standard archive-availability delay or a documented behavior called a “delay between VOD segments,” so avoid treating any single setting or cause as confirmed without those details.
