For a Linux desktop where you want to manage scenes, visuals and audio live, start with OBS Studio. For a fixed playlist on a headless Ubuntu host, FFmpeg supervised by a service manager is a leaner option if you can maintain a command-line setup. Neither choice guarantees a specific computer or connection will stay live indefinitely; test your actual stream and plan for monitoring and recovery.
Choose software for the way you will operate the stream
| Option | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A YouTube stream of uploaded recordings or a playlist, run from the cloud rather than a Linux machine. | Upload, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It loops from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. |
| OBS Studio | Interactive production on a Linux desktop: scenes, live switching, audio inputs, and still-image or video backgrounds. | Linux compatibility does not establish 24/7 reliability on a particular computer. Performance depends on the machine, encoder, chosen settings and scene complexity. |
| FFmpeg with service supervision | A fixed audio/video playlist on a headless Ubuntu host, without a graphical production workflow. | A community project documents one Ubuntu VPS and systemd example. Treat it as a pattern, not proof of reliability, security or suitability for every channel. |
This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a head-to-head endurance test. OBS is the natural starting point when you need operator control; FFmpeg is plausible when the program is fixed and you can maintain its command line and service. YouTube also lists Upstream as a 24/7 cloud studio, but that listing does not establish it as Linux software or provide independent performance results.
Set up the YouTube live connection
- Check channel readiness. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to enable, so confirm access before your planned start. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guide.
- Copy the stream URL and key from your own Live Control Room. Enter them in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: someone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Prefer RTMPS when available. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube reveals the RTMPS URL in the stream settings; OBS has a YouTube RTMPS service preset with primary and backup endpoints. Use the URL shown in your Live Control Room, not an endpoint copied from an example. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and the OBS service configuration.
- Use HLS only when you need a specific capability. YouTube supports HLS ingestion, including for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS uses video segments and has higher latency; it also requires specific segment duration, TS segment format, rolling playlist behavior, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. For a simple audio-led kirtan stream, RTMPS is the straightforward default. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation.
Configure a sustainable stream
Use YouTube’s recommendations as starting points, then test the actual program, computer and connection. Its guidance recommends checking upload speed, testing representative audio and movement, and watching stream health. A static image with devotional audio may not benefit from a high video resolution, but stable audio and uninterrupted delivery still matter.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Rate control for RTMP/RTMPS | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps recommended; AAC or MP3 audio |
| H.264 video, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended |
| H.264 video, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC, 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not promises of playback quality or guaranteed results. Match video bitrate to codec, resolution and frame rate rather than selecting a generic maximum. For the complete, current guidance, check YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use a wired connection where possible and confirm its sustained upload capacity under real conditions.
- Test representative audio and visuals before relying on a long broadcast; monitor stream health while it runs.
- On OBS, keep scene complexity and encoding demands within what the specific Linux machine can sustain. The OBS Project lists Linux/Unix support and requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU plus X window system or Wayland, but warns that meeting baseline requirements does not ensure a given stream configuration will work well. See OBS system requirements.
- For FFmpeg, decide how the process will be supervised, restarted and monitored before treating a playlist loop as an always-on service. A community Ubuntu VPS example uses systemd; it is an example implementation, not a universal deployment recipe.
Plan for 24/7 operation and archives
A continuous stream needs an operating plan as well as an encoder. Decide where it will run, who checks its health, and what happens if the process, host, network or YouTube connection fails. Test restart behavior and keep recovery steps available to whoever operates the channel. The right design differs between a local desktop and a remote host; the cited platform and software guidance does not establish a universal uptime guarantee.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single 24/7 broadcast exceeds that condition, so plan recurring sessions and how you will manage restarts and archives rather than assuming one continuous broadcast will become one archived video. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Confirm music rights before broadcasting
Kirtan can be traditional or newly performed, but an individual recording, arrangement, composition or performance may still have rights holders. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the streamer represents that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights. Confirm the rights for every recording and composition and the territories covered before scheduling a continuous stream. Read YouTube’s live-stream terms.
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can trigger a warning, interruption or termination. If you have a licence for third-party content, YouTube says the channel may still need to be added to the owner’s Content ID allowlist; otherwise, the stream can be interrupted. Check allowlisting as well as the licence itself. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Cost and operating trade-offs
OBS and FFmpeg are software choices for infrastructure you operate; the needs and costs of a desktop or VPS depend on your own setup. The available evidence does not establish a universal hardware or hosting budget, nor a performance advantage for one DIY approach.
