There is no reliable one-size-fits-all monthly price: the electricity cost depends on your complete PC’s measured power draw and your local electricity rate. For a 30-day month of continuous streaming, calculate (average wall watts ÷ 1,000) × 720 hours × your electricity price per kWh. Then add any internet overage, equipment, or paid-service costs separately.
How much does a 24/7 YouTube stream cost with FFmpeg on a low-power Celeron PC? Measure the PC while it runs the stream you intend to use, then apply the formula below. A Celeron model name or processor power figure alone cannot tell you what the whole computer will draw at the wall.
Calculate the monthly electricity cost
Use this formula, where P is the PC’s average power draw in watts, H is the number of streaming hours, and R is your electricity price per kilowatt-hour:
Electricity cost = (P Ă· 1,000) Ă— H Ă— R
A 30-day month has 720 hours (30 Ă— 24). For a month with a different number of days, use the actual streaming hours rather than 720.

Hypothetical example
Suppose your complete PC averages 20 W at the wall during the stream and your electricity rate is 0.20 currency units per kWh. These are example assumptions, not a Celeron benchmark or a quoted local tariff. The calculation is (20 Ă· 1,000) Ă— 720 Ă— 0.20 = 2.88 currency units for 30 days. Replace both assumptions with your own measurement and rate.
Measure the PC, not just the processor
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the computer’s wall draw while it runs the intended FFmpeg job. Include the PC and any equipment whose consumption you want to count; do not mistake a CPU specification for a measurement of the full system. Intel notes that processor power varies with workload and system design.

- Set up the same source video, FFmpeg command, output resolution, frame rate, codec, and filters you expect to use.
- Connect a wall-power monitor and measure the PC while the stream is running. Let the workload settle, then record average watts over a representative period rather than relying on a brief peak or idle reading.
- Multiply the measured average watts by your expected monthly streaming hours and electricity rate using the formula above.
Intel’s 2014 Celeron 2000E guideline gives about 2.4 W idle with C-states enabled, 7.4 W idle with C-states disabled, and 13.2 W for 1080p video decoding in one specific configuration. Those figures are not whole-PC wall measurements, do not describe FFmpeg streaming, and should not be used as an estimate for an unspecified Celeron mini PC. Intel’s Celeron 2000E processor guidelines explain the scope of that example.
Account for costs beyond electricity
Keep other expenses separate so the electricity estimate stays useful. Depending on your setup, consider:

- Internet: Check your plan’s upload capability and data terms, including any overage charges. No universal ISP allowance or fee applies to every reader.
- Equipment: Include a PC purchase or replacement cost separately if you want a broader ownership-cost estimate. A wall-power monitor can help you obtain the power input for the electricity calculation.
- Software or hosting: Add any paid software or hosting you choose; the cost depends on the specific service and plan.
- Power protection: If you choose backup or surge-protection equipment, treat its purchase cost separately from the monthly electricity calculation.
Choose a stream configuration your PC and connection can sustain
The encoding workload and required upload bitrate depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing upload bitrate and lists ingest recommendations by codec and video settings. For H.264, its examples include 6 Mbps for 720p60 and 3 Mbps for 480p30; these are platform recommendations, not measurements of your connection or a Celeron’s performance. YouTube also recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Its live-stream settings guidance lists different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265 and notes that YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer formats. Choose settings your measured upload connection can maintain, then monitor stream health. Reducing resolution or frame rate may lower the ingest bitrate requirement, but this article does not establish how any particular Celeron handles those settings. YouTube recommends testing rather than assuming your advertised upload speed is sufficient.

Check hardware-encoding compatibility
Do not assume that any computer described as a Celeron can use Intel Quick Sync Video for this job. FFmpeg’s documented QSV path requires support from both the decoder and encoder, and the described mode does not allow filters. Compatibility depends on the exact processor generation and graphics hardware, operating system, drivers, FFmpeg build, source and output codecs, and filter chain. Consult the FFmpeg Intel QSV documentation for the supported path; no particular Celeron configuration or 24/7 workload is established here as tested.

For an FFmpeg-to-YouTube stream, you need a source video, an FFmpeg command suited to that source and your chosen output settings, a working upload connection, and a YouTube stream key. Enter YouTube’s live server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration. Treat the key as a password: keep it private and do not include it in a command or log you share publicly.

- Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule a live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key from the live control room. Use YouTube’s current encoder instructions for the Studio interface and stream setup: YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Configure FFmpeg. Select the input file, output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s recommended ingest settings as a starting point, not a substitute for testing the PC and uplink.
- Start the FFmpeg process and inspect the live preview and stream health. Confirm that YouTube receives video and that the stream remains stable before leaving it unattended.
- Plan for failures and restarts. A 24/7 process needs an operating-system or process-management approach that can detect an FFmpeg exit and restart it if appropriate. This is an implementation consideration, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Test recovery behavior before relying on it.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish a maximum continuous-session length, a restart schedule, or an uninterrupted-stream guarantee. For a long-running channel, plan and monitor your own process and connection rather than treating the archive note as a 24/7 reliability promise.
Troubleshoot cost and streaming problems
- Your calculated electricity cost seems implausibly low or high: Check that you measured the whole PC at the wall during the actual FFmpeg workload, used watts rather than kilowatts in the formula, and entered the correct local rate and monthly hours.
- The stream drops or buffers: Test the upload bitrate and review YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Confirm that the selected ingest settings are within the sustained capability of your connection; advertised upload speed alone may not describe performance under continuous load.
- CPU load is high or frames are missed: Check whether the exact hardware and FFmpeg build support the intended encoder path. Quick Sync compatibility is not guaranteed by the Celeron label, and filters may rule out the documented QSV mode.
- FFmpeg stops and the stream does not resume: Check FFmpeg’s exit logs, the network connection, and the process-restart setup. Test the restart path deliberately; YouTube’s archive behavior does not provide a reconnect system for your computer.
- The stream runs but the monthly cost remains uncertain: Repeat the wall measurement over a representative interval and use your actual billed electricity rate. Keep data charges and other recurring costs as separate line items.
