You can use FFmpeg to send a continuous Punjabi kirtan playlist to YouTube Live, but FFmpeg alone does not make a stream reliable around the clock. Set up a YouTube broadcast, use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, confirm rights for every recording and performance, and test the full loop, connection, and restart behavior before relying on it.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that can access live streaming and a broadcast configured in YouTube Live Control Room.
- A computer or server that can run your installed FFmpeg build continuously, plus a stable upload connection with enough sustained capacity for your chosen bitrate.
- The kirtan audio or video files you intend to play, and permission for the exact recordings and performances being broadcast.
- The ingestion URL and stream key shown by YouTube. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
YouTube’s API documentation describes a continuous-broadcast scenario, and Google Cloud documentation names FFmpeg as an encoder example. Neither source guarantees uninterrupted operation for a particular FFmpeg process, host, network, or broadcast. Plan for monitoring and recovery rather than assuming the process will run forever.
Choose an ingestion protocol and stream quality
RTMP or RTMPS for standard ingestion
Use the protocol and current ingestion details displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Configure FFmpeg to send the selected audio and video streams to that endpoint. Keep the stream key private, and do not copy it into a public command example or share it in logs.
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current settings page for the bitrate matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate; a single bitrate is not universal. Use a bitrate your uplink can sustain
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommendations include 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a measurement of your internet connection. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. Choose a stream quality your connection can sustain with room for normal variation, then test and watch stream health while sending representative material.
When HLS may fit better
HLS is a distinct ingestion option, not a drop-in substitute for RTMP settings. It may suit supported codec or HDR workflows, but YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it delivers video in segments. YouTube’s HLS requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations of one to four seconds. Set up the YouTube broadcast and prepare your source
- Create or schedule the broadcast: Open YouTube Live Control Room, create the live stream, and select the settings and visibility you intend to use. Follow the current channel and live-stream eligibility prompts shown there.
- Copy the ingest details: In the stream setup, copy the server URL and stream key. Use RTMPS when YouTube offers it and your FFmpeg build supports it. Store the key securely and avoid putting it in a script or command history accessible to other people.
- Prepare the playlist: Organize the recordings in the intended order and check that every file plays from beginning to end. Decide whether the stream will carry audio only or a video presentation as well; verify that each item has the streams and format your FFmpeg command expects.
- Check permissions: Confirm rights or permission for the exact recording and performance before broadcast. A composition, arrangement, sound recording, and performance can involve separate rights. The devotional subject or traditional character of a shabad does not by itself establish that a particular recording is cleared.
- Test privately or with limited visibility: Use a representative section of the playlist and verify audio, video if used, continuity between files, and YouTube’s stream-health feedback before promoting a public 24/7 broadcast.
Configure FFmpeg and validate the loop
There is no single safe FFmpeg command for every Punjabi kirtan playlist: input formats, whether the stream is audio-only, the installed FFmpeg build, and the desired loop behavior all matter. FFmpeg’s documentation is broad and version-dependent; YouTube’s guidance does not supply a complete tested command for looping these recordings or recovering from every failure. At minimum, make sure your configuration sends the intended audio and video streams to YouTube’s current ingest endpoint, uses the chosen codec and bitrate consistently, and meets the keyframe and audio recommendations above. For a playlist, explicitly test what happens at each file boundary and at the end of the playlist: whether playback advances, repeats in the intended order, and remains synchronized. Do not assume that a process which plays one file correctly will handle a long playlist or loop indefinitely.

Make 24/7 operation recoverable
FFmpeg is the encoder, not a complete reliability plan. A continuous broadcast also depends on the host staying powered and available, source files remaining accessible, network stability, and the behavior of the process after an interruption. YouTube’s API documentation includes a continuous broadcast scenario, but that is not a promise of uninterrupted uptime, an automatic FFmpeg reconnect, or a maximum-duration policy. Before launch, deliberately test a process restart, a temporary loss of network, and recovery after YouTube stops receiving the stream. Confirm who will notice a failure and how they will restart or repair it. Monitor YouTube stream health during operation; the encoder guidance recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring health rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status.

Copyright and channel checks for Punjabi kirtan
Rights depend on the material actually sent. A traditional text or devotional subject does not answer whether a modern arrangement, a specific sound recording, or a performer’s rendition is authorized for a continuous YouTube broadcast. Confirm the relevant permissions for each asset and territory before going live. YouTube’s technical encoder guidance cannot determine whether a particular recording is cleared.
Also review YouTube’s current live-stream and channel requirements in Live Control Room before scheduling the stream. No channel-specific eligibility status or blanket clearance for Punjabi kirtan recordings can be established from the technical setup alone.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the ingest URL and stream key against Live Control Room, confirm the selected protocol matches the endpoint, and verify that FFmpeg is sending the expected streams.
- Stream health reports instability: Compare the configured bitrate with the sustained upload capacity and YouTube recommendation for the selected codec and quality. Test at a lower resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot hold the chosen rate reliably.
- Keyframes or bitrate do not match expectations: Inspect the active FFmpeg settings and output, then align with YouTube’s current recommendations: CBR, two-second recommended keyframes (no more than four seconds), and the applicable codec/resolution/frame-rate bitrate guidance.
- Audio drops, silence, or playlist gaps occur: Play every source file locally, verify the expected audio stream is selected, and test every transition and loop boundary in a live test before unattended operation.
- The broadcast stops after a host or network failure: The FFmpeg process or connection may not have recovered. Check host availability, process supervision and restart behavior, then confirm YouTube is receiving the stream again before considering the service restored.
- A recording triggers a rights concern: Pause or replace the material and verify permission for that exact recording and performance; the fact that it is kirtan does not resolve the rights question.
