You can stream recorded IIT foundation lessons to YouTube through an encoder, but a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast is risky if you need YouTube’s replay: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. For a more dependable plan, prepare original, rights-cleared lessons, test an encoder feed, schedule broadcast sessions shorter than 12 hours, and keep local recordings and a response plan. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports the setup; it does not automatically approve every 24/7 format or guarantee monetization.
What you need before you start
A recorded-lesson stream sends video files through a streaming encoder as a live feed. Viewers encounter the scheduled broadcast as live, even though the lessons were recorded earlier. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and content policies still apply.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Recorded lessons you have the right to broadcast, including the lecture video, instructor audio, board writing, slides, graphics, music, and any third-party clips.
- An encoder that can send the prerecorded lessons to YouTube. YouTube supports both software encoders and hardware encoders; its setup guide is Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A reliable upload connection, someone or something able to detect and respond to failures, and a local recording backup if preserving each session matters.
Do not treat a successful test broadcast as confirmation that YouTube will approve the format for monetization or permit any particular schedule without interruption.
Choose an operating method
| Method | What it involves | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder on a computer | Run encoder software on a computer and send the lesson feed to YouTube. | The computer, software, power, and network must stay available. Someone should monitor the broadcast and respond if playback or the connection fails. |
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Use a hardware device to send the feed. YouTube describes hardware encoders as an option and recommends professional-grade units for higher-production events. | Confirm the particular device supports your source format, looping and restart needs, monitoring, and recovery plan. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a specific model is suited to unattended 24/7 looping. |
For either do-it-yourself route, compare the total cost of equipment or software, electricity, internet service, storage, and the time needed for monitoring. Actual costs depend on what you already own and your local rates; no single total applies to every channel.

Prepare the channel and lessons
Confirm live access
In advance, verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Check for active live-stream restrictions and allow time for first-time enablement, which can take up to 24 hours. Do not wait until the day you intend to launch.
Build and review the lesson sequence
Arrange recordings in the order students should watch them, and check the transition between files. Listen for silence or abrupt changes in volume; confirm that slides and board work are legible; and ensure each lesson has the intended audio and video. If lessons cover different subjects or levels, label the sequence clearly so a viewer joining midstream can tell what is playing.

Make sure you control the rights to all material in every recording. A lesson being educational does not by itself clear third-party music, images, textbook pages, clips, or other protected content for a live broadcast.
Create the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one for the intended broadcast.
- Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key from the stream setup and enter them in your encoder. Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send content to your channel.
- Configure the encoder to play your recorded lessons in the planned order and send the feed to YouTube. YouTube supports encoder streaming; use the encoder’s documentation for its particular playlist and playback controls.
- Start the encoder, then check that its feed appears in the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm picture, sound, and lesson playback before starting the public broadcast.
- Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio when the preview is correct. Verify the live page on the devices your viewers are likely to use.
Keep the stream key secure and use YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance for the values and controls shown in your account. The relevant workflow is described in YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive limit
If viewers need to replay lessons after the broadcast, avoid relying on one day-long live session. YouTube may automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive. See Archive live streams.
Plan separate broadcast blocks that are each shorter than 12 hours, and test the handoff between them before launch. Keep a local recording of the source or broadcast so you have material to restore or edit if a platform archive is missing. Tell viewers in the title or description when the next block begins; that is a useful scheduling choice, not a YouTube requirement.

YouTube’s DVR feature can let viewers pause or rewind a live stream, but rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, including streams beyond 12 hours. Do not promise unlimited rewind during a continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Monitor the broadcast and prepare for failures
A 24/7 schedule needs a way to notice problems and a defined response. YouTube recommends adequate upload bandwidth, preview checks, monitoring audio and video, and checking local archive files. It recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate; this is YouTube’s operational guidance, not a guarantee against connection problems. A network disruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Test the complete playback and session-transition sequence privately or as an unlisted stream before launch.
- Monitor the Live Control Room and the viewer-facing live page. Confirm picture and sound continue, not just that the encoder reports a connection.
- Check local recording files while they are being created and confirm they can be played back.
- Decide who will respond to a dropped feed, encoder crash, failed lesson playback, silent audio, copyright notification, or the next-session handoff.
- If you plan to use a backup encoder, test its startup and changeover rather than assuming it will take over automatically.
These checks reduce avoidable surprises; they are an operating plan, not a promise of uninterrupted service.
Understand copyright and monetization separately
Live copyright checks
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder, a warning or interruption, or termination if the material remains. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance explains that even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the necessary permissions and allowlisting with the rights holder before broadcasting.
Permission does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams, and reused-content review applies to the channel as a whole. Permission to use material, or the absence of a copyright claim, does not by itself establish that a channel qualifies for monetization. For an IIT foundation lessons channel, make it clear who created and teaches the lessons, and foreground original explanation and meaningful educational instruction. See YouTube Channel Monetisation Policies.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable in Studio | The channel may not be verified, may have a live restriction, or first-time enablement may still be processing. | Check eligibility and restrictions, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time live access to activate. Use YouTube’s eligibility guidance. |
| The Live Control Room preview does not appear | The encoder may not be sending a feed, or the server URL or stream key may be wrong. | Check the encoder connection and confirm its entered server URL and stream key match the stream you created. Keep the key private. |
| The stream breaks or becomes unstable | Upload capacity or connectivity may be insufficient for the outgoing feed. | Check the connection and total stream bitrate, then plan for YouTube’s recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Test again before the public schedule. |
| Viewers see a placeholder or the stream is interrupted | YouTube may have detected third-party content. | Review the live-stream copyright notice, remove or replace uncleared material, and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if the material is licensed. |
| A long broadcast has no YouTube replay | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. | Use shorter broadcast sessions for future archives and retain local recordings; do not rely on YouTube to capture a stream over that duration. |
| The encoder is connected but lessons stop advancing | The local playlist or file playback may have stalled even though the connection remains active. | Check the encoder’s playback status and the actual live preview, then restart or advance playback using the encoder’s controls. Include this failure in your monitoring plan. |
