Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a typical lecture made up of slides and speech, start with 1920×1080 at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at 14 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS. In OBS, loop a single file with a Media Source, or use VLC Video with Loop Playlist for multiple lectures. These settings are a starting point—not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: use a bitrate your connection can sustain, test the whole setup, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
Recommended starting settings for a lecture stream
For a 1080p30 H.264 stream, use the following baseline. YouTube’s published figures are recommendations; the right bitrate depends on the selected output and whether your connection can sustain it.
| OBS or stream setting | Starting point | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Video output | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | In OBS, set the output resolution to the size you intend to send. Use the resolution and frame rate suitable for the source. |
| Video codec | H.264 | A broadly compatible baseline. YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS when the encoder supports them. |
| Rate control | CBR | Set the stream encoder’s rate control to constant bitrate. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps for 1080p30 | Use a lower output or bitrate if your sustained upload cannot support it. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz | Check the mixer meters and listen to a test to confirm the lecture speech is clear. |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for live encoder connections. |
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams to make multiple output formats available to viewers. Its current H.264 bitrate guidance includes these representative targets:
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
These values are YouTube’s recommendations, not a promise that a particular computer or internet connection will work reliably at that setting. Consult YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance for the full table and match the recommendation to your codec, resolution and frame rate.

Set up playback and looping in OBS
Loop one lecture file
- In OBS, select the scene where the lecture should appear.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the local video file and enable Loop.
- Preview the scene. Confirm that the picture and lecture audio play as expected.
OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. Its Media Sources guide explains the source controls. A Media Source can also be set to restart when it becomes active; for an always-on scene, avoid unnecessary scene changes and check the source’s settings if playback stops or restarts unexpectedly.
Loop a playlist of lectures
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- Add the lecture files to its playlist and arrange their playback order.
- Enable Loop Playlist and preview playback, including the transition between files.
Use a representative sequence to check that audio levels and file transitions are acceptable before going live. OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes checking captured audio with the Audio Mixer meters.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain
Set the OBS output resolution to the actual stream size you want YouTube to receive. For a lecture with mostly static slides, 30 fps is a reasonable efficiency-oriented starting choice; it is not a YouTube requirement. Moving demonstrations may benefit from a higher frame rate if the source, encoder and connection can handle it. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps.
If 1080p30 at 14 Mbps is unstable, try 720p30 at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps H.264 setting, then reduce further if necessary. A speed test at one moment does not establish that an upload connection will remain stable for a continuous stream. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide identifies dropped frames as a possible sign of an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; lower the bitrate or choose a less demanding output when that happens.

OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide an initial fit based on the computer’s hardware and network conditions. Treat its result as a starting point and test with the real lecture and scene. Meeting OBS’s published system requirements alone does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate or encoder will work smoothly on a given setup.
Pick an encoder and check audio
H.264 is a practical baseline when available. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, but an encoder must support the chosen codec. OBS notes that hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU; quality and compatibility vary by hardware generation and platform, so there is no universal best encoder for every computer. Compare candidates by their support for the output you want, system load during a representative test and observed stream health.

For ordinary spoken lectures, use stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube also lists MP3 as an RTMP/RTMPS audio codec. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists AAC at 384 kbps and 48 kHz; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. Unless the lecture’s production calls for surround sound, stereo is the simpler choice. In either case, verify that the speech is audible in the stream rather than relying only on the source file’s playback.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connect OBS to YouTube and test before leaving it live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the live stream and copy its stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream key in the designated field. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to stream to your channel.
- In OBS’s output and video settings, apply the chosen codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution and frame rate. Set the audio encoder to the intended codec and values.
- Enable Automatic Reconnect in OBS’s Settings > Advanced settings.
- Start a test stream using the actual lecture file or playlist. Check the picture, speech, transitions, dropped frames and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health.
- Run the setup for an extended test before relying on it for continuous operation. Confirm playback continues through a loop or playlist cycle and that the computer, OBS and network remain available.
Automatic Reconnect can help after a connection interruption, but it cannot ensure the computer, media playback, network or YouTube service stays available. OBS and YouTube recommend testing and monitoring rather than treating settings as a guarantee of uninterrupted operation. YouTube’s encoder guidance also explains stream-health monitoring.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or unstable stream health | Upload instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain | Reduce the bitrate or output resolution, then run another extended test. Do not rely on a one-time speed test as evidence of sustained capacity. |
| VLC Video is missing from the source list | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS | Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| The lecture does not repeat | The loop control is off or the wrong source type is being used | For one file, check Loop on the Media Source. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist on VLC Video. |
| Audio is absent or too quiet | The source audio is not reaching the mix as expected or levels are unsuitable | Watch the Audio Mixer meters during preview and listen to the test stream. Check the file and source configuration as well as the selected audio output. |
| Playback restarts or stops after scene changes | The source’s active-state behavior may interact with scene switching | Keep the continuous scene active where possible and inspect the Media Source’s restart-when-active setting. |
| High CPU load or encoding trouble | The chosen encoder, resolution or frame rate may exceed the system’s practical capacity | Test a lower frame rate or resolution, or evaluate a supported hardware encoder. Compare actual load and output quality on the computer in use. |
Keep the content suitable for a continuous YouTube stream
Technical settings do not grant rights to the lecture material. Before streaming, confirm you have permission to use the video, music, images and other included material on YouTube. A prerecorded stream also does not automatically satisfy YouTube’s channel monetization or originality expectations; eligibility and review are separate from encoder configuration. Check YouTube’s current rules for copyright and monetization before making claims about what a channel can earn or whether repeated programming qualifies.
