You can use Docker to package a continuous YouTube Live setup, but Docker does not create the stream: an encoder such as FFmpeg must combine authorized podcast audio with a video track, then send that feed to YouTube. Before building it, decide whether you want one continuous radio-style broadcast or separate broadcasts for individual episodes. The steps below cover a self-hosted, continuous feed and explain the limits of the available Docker example.
First choose what “podcast playlist stream” means
There are three different things that can be called a playlist. An FFmpeg input playlist is a sequence of local audio files. A continuous YouTube Live broadcast is the viewer-facing video event that can carry that sequence. A YouTube playlist is an organizational collection of videos, such as finished livestream archives. They are not interchangeable.
| Goal | Choose | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Run a radio-style podcast station with episodes playing in sequence | One continuous broadcast with an encoder-managed audio playlist | It is one long live video, not a separate archive video for each episode. |
| Give each episode its own live event and archive | Separate scheduled broadcasts, with a stream reused or created as appropriate | You must manage the individual broadcast schedule and transitions. |
| Organize completed episodes or livestreams for viewers | A normal YouTube playlist | This organizes published videos; it does not itself feed audio into a live broadcast. |
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—the viewer-facing video—from a stream, the audio-video feed sent by an encoder. A broadcast is associated with a stream; YouTube’s basic resource model describes a one-to-one relationship, while its concepts guide also documents supported cases where one stream can be bound to as many as three broadcasts. See YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams and the Live Streaming API overview.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the broadcast
Confirm your channel can go live before spending time on the container. YouTube currently says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Requirements can change, so check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live → Stream.
- Create a stream or select an existing one. In the Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Plan to start the encoder, confirm its preview in Live Control Room, and then start the broadcast as required by the selected stream settings. Run a private or unlisted test before a public launch.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the Studio workflow. Sending an RTMP(S) feed with FFmpeg needs the server URL and stream key; an API key is not required just to publish that feed. API automation is a separate task: the Live Streaming API overview describes registering an application, enabling YouTube Data API v3 in a Google Cloud project, and authorizing API calls as the account that owns the channel.
What Docker does—and what it does not
Docker packages the software and its runtime environment. It does not sequence podcast episodes, generate the video, or send anything to YouTube by itself. An encoder such as FFmpeg must read the audio files, provide a video track—often a still image—and publish the resulting feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.

The public project FFmpeg Livestream Docker illustrates a Python/FFmpeg/Docker approach using MP3 files and a static image, and asks users to replace sample songs with rights-cleared material. Treat it as an example, not a verified production recipe: its README identifies missing fuller documentation, Windows/Mac instructions, multi-stream instructions, and a Docker health endpoint, and says it was generated with ChatGPT. It does not establish a robust playlist-boundary strategy, reconnect behavior, secret-management setup, resource requirements, or a dependable 24/7 service level.
Build and test the container workflow
Because a specific, current FFmpeg playlist command and a production-ready Compose configuration are not established here, do not paste an unverified command and assume it will keep a channel live. Validate the exact image and software versions and the playlist behavior you choose. At a high level, the workflow is:

- Prepare the media. Put only authorized podcast episodes, music, artwork, and other assets in a dedicated media directory. Decide the play order and how the encoder should behave when it reaches the last file.
- Provide persistent access. Configure the container to read the media and artwork from storage that remains available when the container is recreated. Keep configuration and logs from exposing the stream key.
- Compose the feed. Configure FFmpeg or another encoder to sequence or loop the audio and supply a video track. A still image is one possible video track, but it does not turn audio into an episode-by-episode archive.
- Publish to YouTube. Use the server URL and key for the selected YouTube stream, along with a protocol and encoder configuration supported by both your encoder and that stream.
- Test the whole path privately. Start the container, check that audio advances across file boundaries, inspect the video and sound in Live Control Room, and confirm the broadcast starts as expected. A successful test of one file does not establish that looping, playlist transitions, or recovery will work unattended.
- Plan operations separately. Decide how you will notice a stopped process, restore service, and protect or rotate credentials. Do not assume Docker alone supplies health monitoring or automatic recovery; these need to be implemented and tested for your deployment.
Choose an ingest protocol and encoder settings
Use the server URL and protocol provided for the particular stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, when supported by the encoder. Its general encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. It also gives 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 Kbps stereo audio as recommended advanced settings. These are general recommendations, not mandatory settings for every source. Consult YouTube’s current live stream settings and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, and match the selected stream’s requirements.
HLS is a separate ingest option, not simply an RTMP URL swap. YouTube’s HLS setup requirements call for TS segments sent with HTTPS POST/PUT, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and segment durations from one to four seconds. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. The cited Docker project does not establish HLS support, so use it only if your chosen encoder and YouTube stream are explicitly configured for that protocol.

Protect rights and credentials
- Use episodes, music, artwork, and other material only when you have the rights needed for this use. A podcast’s availability on another platform does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it in a YouTube livestream.
- YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. An unresolved match can cause a placeholder to replace the video or interrupt or terminate the stream. Even a license may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
- Do not commit a stream key to a public repository or print it in publicly accessible logs. If it is exposed, reset it and replace it wherever the encoder obtains its configuration.
- Keep in mind that a self-hosted container relies on the host, its power, and its network connection remaining available. The cited example mentions a local machine or server but does not establish minimum hardware, bandwidth, or hosting-plan requirements.
Monitor the live session and plan for archives
After the encoder connects, check the Live Control Room preview and watch the actual channel page for sound, picture, and connection problems. YouTube’s creator guidance recommends testing the full setup and checking accessible watch and channel pages; its Live Streaming Guide also discusses publishing completed live archives and creating an archive playlist. If you automate broadcasts through the API, the LiveStreams reference includes stream-status information; verify the stream is active before transitioning a broadcast. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a broadcast stuck in startup states may need to be deleted and recreated.
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for longer sessions, and do not expect one uninterrupted 24/7 feed to become a convenient set of separate episode videos. If individual episode discovery matters, schedule separate broadcasts or publish episodes independently, then organize them in a normal YouTube playlist. An FFmpeg source playlist, a live broadcast, and a YouTube archive playlist solve different problems.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming feed | Wrong stream key or server URL, incorrect protocol, or a stream that has not been enabled | Compare the encoder destination with the selected stream’s settings in Live Control Room. Reset and replace an exposed or suspect key. |
| The preview appears but the broadcast does not start | The broadcast has not been started as required, or its state has not become active | Follow the Live Control Room prompts for the selected stream. For API automation, verify active stream state before transitioning; if the broadcast remains stuck in a startup state, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to delete and recreate it. |
| Audio is silent, out of order, or stops at an episode boundary | Playlist input, file access, audio encoding, or boundary handling is wrong | Test every file and transition in a private/unlisted session. Confirm the container can read the mounted files and inspect the encoder’s output and logs without revealing the key. |
| Video or audio settings are rejected or unstable | Encoder output does not match the selected stream’s supported settings | Check the stream’s protocol and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations; use a supported codec and keyframe interval. |
| The stream is interrupted after starting | A connection or host failure, process exit, or third-party copyright match | Check host/network and encoder status, then review Live Control Room notices. YouTube may interrupt a feed because of unresolved Content ID matches. |
| The live session has no useful archive | The continuous event exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive window | Do not depend on a longer session becoming an archive. For episode-level access, publish separate episodes or run separate broadcasts. |
