OBS Studio is the best-supported free software choice for running a recorded study stream on YouTube from your own computer. It can encode a prerecorded video or playlist for YouTube Live, but the computer, media files, power and internet connection all need to remain available. Which software should you use?
Choose OBS Studio if you want a free, configurable local setup and can keep a computer running. OBS Project describes OBS as open-source and free for anyone to use, for any reason. The available sources do not provide a controlled comparison with other free encoders, so this is the strongest-supported choice here—not proof that OBS is universally best.
YouTube Studio is part of the live-streaming workflow, but it is not the local encoder that continuously plays and sends your prerecorded video. OBS performs that work on your computer; YouTube receives the resulting live feed.
How to set up a recorded study stream with OBS
- Prepare the video or playlist. Use media you have the necessary rights to stream. Make sure the files are available on the computer that will run OBS.
- Configure OBS to play the media. Create a scene with a source for your video or playlist, and set up the playback so it can repeat. The sources available for this guide do not establish exact menu labels or steps, so check OBS Help for instructions matching your installed version.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube’s live-streaming workflow, configure the encoder connection using the stream details YouTube provides. Keep your stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Check the incoming feed. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and audio before treating the stream as live. Monitor the broadcast after it starts rather than assuming the encoder will run indefinitely without interruption.
- Keep the local setup operating. Leave the computer powered on, OBS running, the media files accessible and the upload connection available. Plan how you will notice and respond if playback, the computer or the connection stops.
No specific OBS bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, minimum computer specification or required upload speed is established by the sources cited here. Avoid treating any generic setting as a guarantee: choose settings appropriate to your media, connection and YouTube’s current guidance, then verify the feed in the live interface.

Copyright and YouTube rules still apply
Using prerecorded material, calling a broadcast a study stream or sending it through OBS does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say providers must have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights, and must comply with applicable laws and regulations.
YouTube also says livestream content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it may restrict a creator’s ability to livestream. Rights clearance does not guarantee that an automated system will never interrupt a broadcast.
