To stream prerecorded lessons on YouTube around the clock, send YouTube Live one continuous feed from an encoder: either software running on a computer you keep powered and connected, or a cloud service that plays uploaded videos. Preventing black frames specifically between lessons is a separate issue: YouTube’s published guidance covers stream health and encoder settings, but does not establish a particular OBS playlist setting as a fix for lesson-boundary gaps. Test the exact files and handoff before relying on a long broadcast.

Choose how to keep the feed running

Approach What stays online Playlist and troubleshooting control Trade-off
Local encoder software Your computer, encoder, power, and internet connection must remain available. You operate the encoder and can inspect its sources and output locally. Direct control, but an interruption to the computer or connection can interrupt the feed.
Standalone encoder hardware The encoder hardware and its network connection must remain available. Depends on the device and configuration; no specific playlist-transition capability is established by YouTube’s setup guidance. A computer running software is not the only encoder option, but hardware still has to send a feed.
Cloud service The provider runs the stream from its cloud infrastructure rather than a home computer. Depends on the service’s tools; verify how it handles playlist handoffs and inspect its output. Moves the local computer and home-connection dependency, while adding dependence on a service.

YouTube recognizes both software and hardware encoders, and its verified encoder page lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. That listing is not evidence of YouTube ownership, endorsement, or tested performance. For StreamNeo’s specific cloud workflow and limits, see StreamNeo.

Set up a continuous YouTube Live feed

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream enablement process for your channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this before a planned broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Prepare the lessons and playlist in your encoder. Add the prerecorded videos in the order you want them to play and configure the encoder to send a continuous program to YouTube. Confirm the files play and that the intended audio and video are present. The exact playlist and transition controls vary by encoder; YouTube’s encoder setup page does not prescribe an OBS playlist recipe.
  3. Connect the encoder to the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s connection settings. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Use a stream-specific key where available, and revoke or replace a key if it is exposed.
  4. Configure and start the encoder. Match its protocol and output settings to YouTube’s current recommendations below, then start sending the feed. Check the Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages before treating the broadcast as ready for viewers.
  5. Run a representative preflight. Test the actual lesson files, including their audio, motion, and transitions, rather than a static test image. YouTube recommends a speed test and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. Confirm a lesson boundary in the outgoing feed before leaving the stream unattended.

Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings

The figures below are YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS recommendations, checked in 2026; they are guidance, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection or encoder will remain stable. The full table is in YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Setting YouTube guidance
Ingest protocol RTMPS is recommended; it encrypts the contribution feed in transit to Google’s servers.
Video codec and frame rate RTMP/RTMPS supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, at up to 60 fps.
Rate control Use constant bitrate (CBR).
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
H.264 720p30 or 720p60 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended.
H.264 1080p30 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended.
H.264 1080p60 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended.
Stereo audio over RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps recommended.
SDR color space Rec. 709.

Choose a bitrate that your upload connection can sustain, not merely the highest value the encoder allows. YouTube recommends a speed test, a representative preflight, and stream-health monitoring. YouTube detects incoming encoder settings in the Live Control Room and transcodes the feed into formats for viewers.

Diagnose black frames by when they happen

Black frames coincide with a lesson change

If the connection remains healthy and the black interval appears at the same point as a file change, the available official documentation does not identify a universal cause or establish a specific OBS transition setting as the fix. Reproduce the handoff in a controlled test: play the same files in the same order, watch the encoder’s program output, and note whether the gap is already present there or appears only after sending to YouTube. Check the source’s playback and loop behavior, the playlist handoff, and whether the next file has video from its first frames. These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed remedies.

The encoder reports dropped frames or an unstable connection

OBS says a rising dropped-frames counter and a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check upload stability and lower the configured bitrate if it exceeds what the connection can reliably deliver. This signal points to a connectivity or bitrate problem; it does not by itself prove why a black interval occurs precisely between lessons. See the OBS Help Portal.

YouTube reports a stream configuration issue

Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and compare the encoder’s output with the recommended settings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes health states as good (no warning-or-worse configuration issues), ok (no error-level issues), bad (one or more error-level issues), and noData (YouTube has no health information). The API’s configuration issue list provides diagnostic details; noData is not proof that the stream is healthy. See Google’s LiveStreams documentation.

Keep the stream compliant and operational

  • Check rights to every lesson and audio track. A 24/7 broadcast is still a YouTube upload and stream: use material you own or are authorized to stream, including music and embedded clips. YouTube’s encoder setup and settings documentation does not determine whether your specific content is permitted, so review the applicable YouTube policies and any rights-holder terms before broadcasting.
  • Do not assume repetition guarantees monetization. A technically continuous stream does not establish eligibility for monetization or compliance with YouTube’s channel-level policies. Review the current policies for reused and repetitive content rather than relying on the encoder’s status.
  • Plan for the stream’s archive behavior. YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after sending stops. Do not treat a long-running 24/7 broadcast as a reliable way to create a complete archive; plan separate recordings or shorter broadcasts if keeping replays matters.
  • Monitor the system you chose. With local encoding, check the computer, encoder, power, and connection. With a cloud service, check the service’s playback and recovery controls. In either case, verify the YouTube feed and stream-health messages rather than assuming that a running playlist means viewers see uninterrupted video.

When HLS is relevant—and when it is not

YouTube documents HLS ingest for high-quality or high-resolution streams when higher latency is acceptable. It is not a general-purpose cure for black frames between lesson files, and its requirements are more involved than a typical playlist setup.

HLS requires HTTPS, a persistent connection, one encoded stream with muxed audio and video, HLS-compliant media playlists and segments, and supported formats. YouTube’s HLS guidance supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, requires a closed GOP, recommends segments of 1–4 seconds, and sets a 5-second maximum. Because it is segment-based, HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC. Consult Google’s HLS ingestion documentation before selecting it; it is not a shortcut around diagnosing a lesson-boundary gap.
