1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo add a waveform to an always-on podcast stream in OBS, install an OBS visualizer plugin, add its source to the scene that carries your continuous program, and select the audio source viewers hear. For a conventional waveform or spectrum, start with Waveform. Audio Waves Visualizer is an alternative for shader-based templates and custom effects, but its listing requires OBS Studio 32.0.2 or later.
Choose a visualizer that fits your OBS setup
| Plugin | Best fit | Compatibility and constraints |
|---|---|---|
| Waveform | Conventional line, bar, or circular spectrum; waveform display and audio metrics. | The OBS resource listing specifies minimum OBS Studio 27.0.0 and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. It lists Waveform 1.9.1, updated July 14, 2026, as checked October 3, 2026. Linux users running OBS as Flatpak should install the Flatpak version of Waveform, according to the project instructions. Waveform resource listing. |
| Audio Waves Visualizer | Shader-driven looks, bundled templates, or custom effects. | The OBS resource listing specifies minimum OBS Studio 32.0.2 for version 3.0.5, and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Its author warns that some themes may cause lag on weaker GPUs; this is a qualitative author warning, not a benchmark. Audio Waves Visualizer listing. |
| Spectralizer | An existing older installation. | Its OBS resource page says it is deprecated in favor of Waveform, which offers more options; it is not the recommended starting point for a new setup. Spectralizer listing. |
These are plugin-listing compatibility details, not a guarantee that every operating-system build or OBS packaging format works identically. OBS recommends consulting each plugin’s own documentation. Check the current download page and installation notes before installing.
Install the plugin and add it to the continuous scene
- Check your OBS version and package. Confirm that your OBS Studio version meets the chosen plugin’s stated minimum. On Linux, note whether OBS is installed as Flatpak or through another package source.
- Install Waveform or Audio Waves Visualizer using its official resource page and project instructions. If OBS is Flatpak, use Flatpak Waveform rather than mixing package formats, as directed by the project repository.
- Restart OBS if needed, then open the scene used for the continuous podcast output. Plugins add sources to OBS, and those sources are rendered in scenes. Use the plugin’s documentation for its exact source controls and selection fields.
- Add the visualizer source to that scene. Keep it in the scene that is actually used for your always-on program, rather than only in a temporary setup or preview scene.
- Select the podcast program audio source. Waveform describes its graph and metrics as applying to an audio source. Audio Waves Visualizer listens to a selected OBS audio source and analyzes it for the graphic. Choose the mixer source that carries the same program audio sent to the stream.
- Confirm the selected source is active. Speak, play the program audio, or otherwise produce sound, and check that its OBS mixer meter responds before adjusting the visualizer.
- Position and style the graphic on the output canvas. Resize it and set its placement, colors, and opacity so it is readable without hiding branding or information. For Audio Waves Visualizer, test the intended template or custom effect on the production machine before leaving it running.
- Check the actual stream and unattended recovery path. Validate the scene, audio selection, and output after scene changes, reconnects, and OBS or system restarts. Plugin documentation describes source behavior; it does not establish guaranteed 24/7 recovery.
Make sure the graphic follows the sound viewers hear
The visualizer can only react to the OBS audio source you select. If it stays still, confirm that the chosen source is active and its mixer meter moves. If it reacts to the wrong sound, select the podcast program feed instead of an unrelated desktop, microphone, or temporary media source. The same principle applies when the show’s routing changes: recheck which source carries the final program audio to the stream.
Waveform describes itself as a plugin for showing a “(cosmetic) frequency spectrum graph and other metrics of an audio source.” The visualization is a display of the selected signal; it is not a substitute for checking that the stream’s audio mix is working.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check performance and continuous operation before relying on it
- Test the complete scene on the machine that will run OBS continuously, with the intended visualizer style and other active sources.
- If OBS becomes sluggish, try a simpler Waveform style or a less demanding Audio Waves template. The Audio Waves author warns that some themes may cause lag on weaker GPUs; no specific hardware threshold or measured comparison is established.
- Watch the stream output after scene switches, reconnects, and OBS or system restarts. Verify both the moving graphic and the audible program feed.
- Do not assume a plugin will automatically recover after every crash, source switch, reconnect, or restart. The cited plugin and OBS documentation do not certify a 24/7 reliability level.
Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The visualizer source is missing. | The plugin may not match the OBS version, operating system, or package type, or its installation may not have completed. | Check the plugin’s installation notes and compatibility listing; confirm the OBS package type, restart OBS, and consult the plugin documentation. OBS advises users to check plugin-specific documentation. |
| The graphic does not move. | The selected audio source is inactive, or the visualizer is listening to a different source. | Confirm that the selected source’s OBS mixer meter responds to the podcast audio, then reselect the source in the visualizer controls. |
| The graphic moves to the wrong sound. | The visualizer is connected to an unrelated desktop, microphone, or temporary media source. | Select the mixer source carrying the podcast program feed viewers hear. |
| OBS becomes sluggish with Audio Waves Visualizer. | The selected theme may be demanding for the available GPU, as the plugin author cautions. | Try a simpler Waveform style or a less demanding Audio Waves template, then test again on the production machine. |
| The visualizer stops or changes after a reconnect, scene switch, or restart. | The current scene, source selection, or recovery behavior may differ from the preflight setup. | Inspect the live output and repeat the relevant recovery test on the actual system; plugin documentation does not establish guaranteed unattended recovery. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded podcast videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. OBS remains the do-it-yourself route for a live, audio-reactive scene like the one above; StreamNeo does not add an OBS waveform to that scene.
