First identify whether the load comes from video encoding, media decoding, rendering, or a complex OBS scene. Then change the setting that matches the bottleneck: enable hardware decoding for a supported Media Source, simplify the scene, or move encoding from x264 to a supported GPU encoder.
Find out what is using the CPU
OBS performs several different jobs at once. A video file must be decoded for playback; the scene must be composed and rendered; and the finished output must be encoded for streaming or recording. High CPU use can come from any of these, so changing the encoder will not necessarily fix a decoding or scene-rendering problem.
- Open OBS Stats and note CPU use, rendering lag, and encoding lag while the service video is playing.
- If practical, compare a short run with the loop disabled against one with the loop running, then compare those with streaming or recording enabled.
- Change one thing at a time and observe the same representative scene. That makes it easier to tell whether a change helped and to spot a new playback, sync, or image-quality problem.
There is no reliable universal percentage of CPU savings for any one setting. Results depend on the computer, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, media format, and scene complexity.
Set up the loop for the kind of service video you have
One prerecorded file
- In the OBS scene, add a Media Source and select the service recording.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop to repeat the file.
- Check how the source behaves when it is hidden, such as when switching scenes, and test a full loop so you can confirm playback and audio work as intended.
OBS documents the Media Source loop control and supported media options in its Media Sources guide.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A playlist of recordings
- Add a VLC Video source and select the files for the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties.
- If VLC Video is unavailable, install the VLC version that matches the OBS installation, then reopen OBS and check again.
VLC Video offers playlist looping, but it depends on VLC being installed. For a single file, a Media Source is the simpler option. OBS describes both source types in its Media Sources guide.
Try hardware decoding for the video file
For a Media Source, open its properties and enable Use hardware decoding when available. This can move supported media decoding from the CPU to the GPU, but it is conditional: the file format and hardware must support it, and it may not reduce CPU use on every computer.

After enabling it, play the service video on the actual streaming computer. Check that the image plays smoothly and that audio remains in sync. If playback becomes less reliable, turn the option off again. The setting is documented by OBS in its Media Sources guide.
Reduce unnecessary scene and source work
Even sources that are not currently visible can use resources. A scene collection with many duplicated or unnecessary sources, or several demanding browser sources, can add work beyond the loop itself.

- Remove sources you no longer use and simplify scenes and collections where possible.
- Reduce the number and dimensions of browser sources. If a graphic is static, consider using an image source instead.
- Use video media at a resolution appropriate to the stream output rather than oversized files that must be scaled down.
- Keep the elements the congregation needs to see, such as readable lyrics and service details; simplify decoration before sacrificing essential content.
These are workload reductions, not guaranteed CPU fixes. OBS discusses source and scene costs in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
If x264 encoding is the bottleneck, test a hardware encoder
If OBS Stats points to encoding lag and OBS is using x264, try a compatible hardware encoder—such as NVENC, AMF, or QSV, depending on the computer and platform. In OBS, check Settings → Output and choose an available hardware encoder for the streaming or recording output you are using. The exact options depend on the installed hardware and OBS setup.

Hardware encoding can take video-encoding work off the CPU. OBS Project generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because a dedicated GPU component can encode more efficiently than the x264 software encoder. However, encoder generation matters: older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. Compare the result using a representative scene and the bitrate you actually intend to use; do not assume the CPU benefit makes the quality tradeoff worthwhile. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.
Keep the encoder, bitrate, and output settings in context
A lower bitrate is not, by itself, a guaranteed way to reduce CPU use: the encoder and the amount of video work matter, and lowering bitrate can reduce image quality. Likewise, changing resolution or frame rate may reduce workload but can make lyrics or service details harder to read or motion less smooth. The right comparison is the actual output at the quality your service requires, not a setting chosen in isolation.

There is no single resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or keyframe value that can be recommended from the information available about your computer, service footage, and streaming destination. Check the destination’s current streaming requirements for any required output values, then test changes in OBS. OBS notes that CPU requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity in its system requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a hardware upgrade may help
Consider a graphics card with an OBS-supported hardware encoder only after you have confirmed that x264 encoding—not media decoding, rendering, or scene complexity—is the CPU bottleneck. Verify the exact card revision, operating-system support, driver compatibility, available case space, and power supply before buying. A model name alone does not establish that a specific card will work in an unknown church computer.
OBS lists examples of compatible NVIDIA generations, including GeForce 750 Ti / 900-series (Maxwell) or higher for NVENC, and recommends sixth-generation NVENC (Turing), including GTX 1650 rev 2 and higher. Confirm the exact revision and that the encoder is available in your current OBS installation; these examples do not guarantee compatibility with your system. See the OBS hardware encoding page and system requirements.
Common problems and what to check
- CPU stays high even with the loop disabled: Look for encoding lag, rendering lag, or other active sources in Stats. Simplify the scene and test streaming or recording separately rather than assuming the loop is responsible.
- Hardware decoding makes playback worse: The format or hardware may not support the path well. Disable the option and compare playback and sync again.
- VLC Video is missing: Check that VLC is installed and matches the OBS installation, then reopen OBS.
- Switching scenes disrupts the video: Check the Media Source visibility behavior and test the transitions you use during a service.
- Hardware encoding lowers image quality: Compare the encoder at the intended bitrate. Older encoder generations can have a quality tradeoff; return to x264 or adjust the workload if the output is not acceptable.
- CPU remains high after changing the encoder: Recheck decoding, rendering, source count, browser sources, media resolution, and output workload. A hardware encoder addresses encoding work, not every OBS task.
