Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First determine whether the stream is failing on its way from your encoder to YouTube or whether the outgoing feed is healthy but some viewers cannot play it smoothly. Check OBS’s network dropped-frame counter and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Dropped frames point to the outgoing connection; a clean OBS feed with viewer complaints calls for a separate audience-playback diagnosis. The fixes differ, and neither a speed test nor one healthy signal guarantees uninterrupted playback.
Identify where the buffering starts
Ask whether all viewers are affected or only some, whether YouTube reports a health warning, and whether OBS reports network dropped frames. Note when the problem begins and whether it returns at similar times; a simple time-and-symptom log can help you compare conditions.
- OBS reports dropped frames: Start with the connection from your streaming computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS says dropped frames mean that connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate.
- OBS is clean, but viewers report buffering: Check audience playback conditions and whether the stream’s bitrate, resolution, or frame rate is too demanding for some viewers’ connections or devices. A clean outgoing feed does not prove that every viewer can play it smoothly.
- YouTube reports insufficient incoming video: Treat the health message as evidence that YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. Its Live Streaming API documentation describes the
videoIngestionStarvedstatus this way: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. As such, viewers will experience buffering.”
OBS also cautions that viewers may report lag or buffering even when the broadcaster has no dropped frames. See its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.
Check YouTube stream health and encoder settings
Test the actual always-on program
YouTube recommends testing before the stream and monitoring stream health and messages while live. Make the pre-stream test resemble the real podcast stream, including audio and movement, rather than relying only on a brief test with different content. Review the warning itself: YouTube lists configuration issues involving bitrate, frame rate, codec, keyframe frequency, and video ingestion.

Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
There is no universal bitrate that fixes buffering. YouTube’s recommended ranges depend on codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 30 fps, its current guidance lists these examples:
| Ingestion format | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s configuration recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the selected stream. H.265/HEVC and AV1 use different ranges. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use; it was accessed on 2026-10-03.

Check keyframe cadence when health flags it
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its health documentation associates long keyframe intervals with buffering. If YouTube flags keyframe frequency, change the encoder setting to match the platform guidance rather than guessing.
If OBS shows network dropped frames
- Try Ethernet before buying equipment. If the streaming computer uses Wi-Fi, test with an existing wired connection if available. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. An Ethernet cable is useful only if you need one to make that test; it cannot fix viewer-side playback or an incorrect encoder setting.
- Reduce OBS video bitrate to a sustainable level. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Other network use, actual sustained upload capacity, and YouTube’s format-specific recommendations all matter. One speed test cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a continuous stream.
- Check whether the ingest route is the problem. If OBS or your streaming service offers another ingest server, test it. OBS also documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, and suggests checking IP binding and IP family settings. If changing to IPv4-only makes no difference, return IP family to its default dual-stack setting.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as mitigation. OBS can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but says this does not resolve the underlying connection problem and reduces video quality.
- Isolate software interference. VPNs, security software, network optimization utilities, and outdated network drivers may affect the connection. Test one suspected factor at a time, follow the relevant vendor’s current guidance, and restore security protections after a diagnostic test.
- Restart and escalate with evidence. Restart the modem and router. If the problem persists, share the times, symptoms, OBS logs, and YouTube health messages with your ISP. OBS notes that provider-side changes or route congestion may be outside the broadcaster’s control. Ask the ISP before replacing suspected hardware if you are unsure what is at fault.
These checks follow OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance, dated 2024-09-30.

If viewers buffer but the outgoing feed is clean
Do not assume the encoder or your ISP is at fault. Viewers use different devices, networks, and locations. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but individual viewers may still face constrained connections or devices.
- Ask affected viewers whether the problem occurs on another device, app or browser, network, or playback quality. Compare affected viewers with those who can watch smoothly.
- If the reports are widespread, test a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate that remains within YouTube’s guidance for your chosen format. Change one setting at a time and monitor YouTube stream health and viewer reports.
- Consider the trade-off before changing the stream for everyone: a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate may help more varied connections and devices, but reduces the stream’s quality for the audience as a whole.
Choose a remedy based on the signal
| Remedy | Use it when | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lower outgoing bitrate | OBS reports dropped frames or the connection cannot sustain the current bitrate. | Can reduce image quality; stay within YouTube’s guidance for the selected format. |
| Set the recommended keyframe interval | YouTube health warns about long keyframe intervals. | Use the platform’s encoder guidance; long intervals can contribute to buffering. |
| Test wired Ethernet | The broadcaster uses Wi-Fi and OBS reports dropped frames. | Requires a wired route; it does not address viewer-side playback. |
| Lower audience-facing bitrate, resolution, or frame rate | The outgoing feed is clean but viewers report buffering. | Reduces quality for all viewers; test the effect and observe platform recommendations. |
| Contact the ISP | Local checks fail or connection problems continue. | The ISP may need to investigate provider-side or route issues; provide logs and timestamps. |
Prepare an always-on stream for recurring problems
Before relying on a continuous podcast stream, test under representative conditions and check YouTube health messages during operation. If a fault recurs, compare its time with your log, OBS’s dropped-frame counter, and YouTube’s health status. These signals help separate an outgoing connection problem from playback trouble reported by viewers; no single configuration change guarantees that a stream will never buffer.
