To set a church YouTube stream to 720p, enable manual resolution in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then configure your encoder for 1280×720 and choose a codec-appropriate bitrate. For a low-bandwidth connection, start at 30 fps, test the actual upload speed available at service time, and lower the resolution if the connection cannot reliably sustain the stream.
Set 720p in YouTube Studio and your encoder
- Create a custom stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to enter the Live Control Room. Create or select a custom stream key for repeatable manual settings. In the stream-resolution options, enable manual settings. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance.
- Set the encoder’s video output. Choose a resolution of 1280×720 and select 30 or 60 fps. For a service without fast movement, 30 fps is a sensible bandwidth-conscious starting point. YouTube lists the same 720p bitrate ranges at both frame rates; 60 fps may suit faster motion, but it does not get a lower bitrate recommendation.
- Choose a codec and its 720p bitrate. Match the encoder’s codec to the appropriate YouTube live-ingestion recommendation below. These are live-stream settings, not separate YouTube video-upload encoding recommendations.
- Set rate control and keyframes. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport to YouTube’s servers.
- Match the encoder to the stream key. Confirm the stream key and encoder settings agree before going live. If YouTube reports an incorrect bitrate, check that the encoder is sending the bitrate configured for that ingestion setup; a non-variable-resolution entrypoint needs the exact bitrate specified in its ingestion settings.

These are YouTube Help’s live encoder recommendations, current page accessed in 2026. Use only a codec supported by both your encoder and YouTube ingestion. The recommended bitrate is not a guarantee that a venue’s internet connection will carry it reliably.
Check upload speed and leave headroom
Measure outbound upload bandwidth at the church, preferably at a time and under conditions similar to the service. The connection needs capacity beyond the stream’s bitrate: YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Its Streaming tips put the key constraint plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”
- Allow for the stream plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If there is a backup stream, include its bitrate too; YouTube advises that primary plus backup plus the margin fit within outbound capacity.
- Check whether other people or devices will use the church connection during the service. Shared traffic can reduce the upload bandwidth available to the encoder.
- Do not treat the internet plan’s advertised speed as a guarantee of the upload capacity available at the encoder during worship.
- If the streaming computer’s Wi-Fi connection is unstable and a router connection is available, wired Ethernet may address that local wireless problem. It cannot increase the ISP’s upload capacity or fix a saturated upstream connection.
Test before the service and monitor stream health
- Run a test stream before the service using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and stream key. YouTube recommends: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Include representative audio and movement in the test, and check YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream-health messages and encoder warnings.
- If the upload connection cannot sustain 720p at the selected bitrate, lower the resolution and use the bitrate that matches the new encoder output. Then confirm the stream-key and encoder settings agree and test again.
- During the event, keep an eye on stream health and respond to encoder or Live Control Room messages rather than assuming a successful pre-service test guarantees conditions will stay unchanged.
YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into different output formats. Sending 720p from the encoder does not mean every viewer will have a 720p playback option: playback quality also depends on the viewer’s device and network.

Troubleshoot common 720p streaming problems
