For a prerecorded podcast episode, use OBS Studio on your Mac mini: add the episode as a Media Source, pair audio-only recordings with a still image or title card, then send the stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For a live podcast conversation, use OBS microphone inputs instead. These are different audio workflows, so choose the path that matches what you are broadcasting.

Choose the right workflow

Decision Prerecorded episode Live podcast conversation
Main OBS source Media Source with the local audio or video file Microphone or interface audio input, plus camera or graphics sources as needed
Visual Still image, title card, or the episode video Camera, guest layout, graphics, or a simple static scene
Audio routing Playback from the OBS media source Selected microphone inputs; check the Audio Mixer meters
Optional equipment Usually none beyond the Mac and the files you already have A microphone; headphones for monitoring; an interface or mixer for more involved inputs
What to rehearse File playback, visual, levels, and whether looping is intended Input selection, echo, levels, camera, and guest mix

The comparison describes the capabilities of OBS sources and YouTube’s encoder setup, not results from a hands-on test.

Check YouTube eligibility and your Mac mini

Enable live streaming in advance

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Check OBS compatibility

OBS Studio lists macOS 11 Big Sur or later and an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU as its macOS baseline. That is a minimum requirement, not a guarantee that a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene will run smoothly. OBS’s system requirements explain the distinction.

Apple 2020 Mac Mini with Apple M1 Chip, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD Storage - Silver (Renewed)
  • Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
  • 8-core CPU packs up to 3x faster performance to fly through workflows quicker than ever*
  • 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*
  • 16-core Neural Engine for advanced machine learning
  • 8GB of unified memory so everything you do is fast and fluid

Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications list front USB-C ports and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, as well as rear Ethernet, HDMI, and Thunderbolt ports; the exact ports vary by configuration. Ethernet is a sensible wired connection when available, and the headphone jack can be used for listening. The Mac’s ports do not provide the streaming scene or encoder workflow: OBS and your selected sources do that. See Apple’s Mac mini technical specifications.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, or select an existing stream. Choose the encoder workflow rather than a webcam workflow. YouTube’s encoder streaming guide describes the setup.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube if available, and enter the stream key; if configuring a custom destination, enter YouTube’s server URL and key. Follow the values shown for the selected stream in Live Control Room.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share it publicly. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Build and test your scene using the appropriate prerecorded or live setup below, then check the YouTube preview before starting the event.

Set up a prerecorded podcast episode

For an audio-only episode

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast and add an Image source containing a title card, cover art, or another visual you have permission to use.
  2. Add a Media Source and select the local episode file. OBS documents common media types including MP3, AAC, WAV, MP4, MOV, and MKV. A file extension alone does not guarantee that every encoding and container combination will play correctly, so verify the actual file in a rehearsal.
  3. Decide whether the episode should play once or repeat. Enable the Media Source’s loop option only if you intend it to restart automatically.
  4. Play the source and check the Audio Mixer meters and the YouTube preview. Confirm that the visual remains on screen and the audio is clear at the intended level.

For a prerecorded video episode

  1. Add the video file as an OBS Media Source and select it from disk.
  2. Fit or crop the source to the canvas and check that its aspect ratio and picture are correct in the preview.
  3. Check the source’s audio meters and listen to the preview. Rehearse the full file or enough of it to establish that playback, sound, and any intended loop behave as expected.

OBS’s Media Sources guide explains its media source and loop option.

Set up a live podcast conversation

  1. Connect the microphone or audio interface you plan to use, then add or select it as an audio input in OBS. Add camera and graphics sources if the conversation will be on screen.
  2. Speak at the expected volume and watch the Audio Mixer meters. Listen through headphones to check level and clarity before going live.
  3. Avoid capturing the same device both globally and again as a scene source: OBS warns that selecting a device in both places can cause echo. Check OBS’s audio source guidance.
  4. For a multi-microphone setup, confirm that each input is routed correctly and that remote guests are audible in the mix. An interface or mixer may help with more complex inputs, but it is not required simply to send a prerecorded episode.

A USB microphone is an optional practical choice if you will speak live. Headphones are useful for monitoring; a mixer or interface is relevant when the production needs multiple microphones or more involved routing. None is a prerequisite for streaming a finished recording.

Capture audio from another Mac app only if needed

If the episode is a local file, OBS’s Media Source is the direct documented route. If you need to capture sound playing in another application, OBS documents a built-in macOS Audio Capture source in OBS Studio 30 and later on macOS 13 Ventura and later. It can capture desktop audio or an individual application. Older setups may require audio-routing software and manual configuration. See the OBS macOS audio capture guide.

Choose stream settings and check upload capacity

For encoder streams, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its listed stereo audio recommendation is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. These are YouTube’s configuration recommendations, not a performance test of your Mac mini. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings.

Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then verify the result with a rehearsal. Your suitable video resolution, frame rate, and bitrate depend on the episode, the chosen encoder, scene complexity, and available upload bandwidth; the Mac mini’s minimum system requirement does not settle those choices.

YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom beyond the aggregate outgoing bitrate. Check outbound upload capacity rather than relying on download speed alone, and account for any other devices or services using the same connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Rehearse, go live, and confirm the archive

  1. Test before the event. OBS recommends making a short test stream or recording before the first real broadcast. Confirm that the media plays, the correct scene is visible, and audio reaches the stream.
  2. Prepare early. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Check that the preview appears in Live Control Room, listen for the correct audio, and verify the event page before going live. Guidance is in YouTube’s streaming tips.
  3. Monitor the broadcast. Watch the preview and OBS audio meters during transmission; listen for dropouts, unexpected silence, or a source that has stopped playing.
  4. End deliberately. Stop the event in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as appropriate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but confirm that the archive is available before relying on it as your only copy. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether live streaming is enabled. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours; also check for any live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Recheck the selected YouTube stream, server URL, and stream key in OBS against Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password; replace it in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed.
  • The picture arrives but there is no episode audio: Confirm the correct Media Source is playing and watch its Audio Mixer meter. For live speech, confirm the intended microphone or interface input is selected and active.
  • You hear echo or doubled audio: Check whether the same input device is selected globally and again as a scene source, then remove the duplicate capture.
  • Another application’s sound is missing: For app or desktop capture, verify that your OBS version is 30 or later and macOS is Ventura 13 or later for the documented built-in macOS Audio Capture source. For a local episode file, use Media Source instead.
  • The stream stutters or drops frames: Check upload bandwidth and whether other network use is competing with the stream. Compare the outgoing bitrate with available upload capacity while keeping YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; also reduce workload if the Mac is struggling with the chosen settings or scene.
  • The episode stops after one play: If you intended continuous playback, enable looping in the Media Source and rehearse it. If you intended a single event, the end of the file is expected behavior.
  • You cannot find the recording afterward: Check YouTube’s archive in Studio rather than assuming it is available; confirm it before treating it as the only copy.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Only broadcast podcast audio, video, artwork, and other material you have the rights or permissions to use. A live encoder setup does not itself grant rights to music, clips, guest recordings, or images included in an episode. Review YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility and restrictions and applicable channel policies before scheduling. A prerecorded episode played through an encoder remains subject to YouTube rules; do not assume that presenting previously published material as live removes copyright or reused-content concerns.

If the goal is to keep uploaded podcast episodes looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and the stream can keep running with your Mac mini and home connection off. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.

The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
