For a simple episode sequence, add one VLC Video Source to an OBS scene, load your local podcast episode videos into its playlist in order, turn shuffle off, and choose whether the playlist should loop. OBS can advance through the files without changing scenes. If every episode needs its own layout or branding, use Advanced Scene Switcher to trigger a scene change when the appropriate media item ends.
Choose the right setup for your episodes

Set up a playlist for automatic episode playback
- Prepare the files. Make sure the episode videos are available locally on the computer running OBS. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among the supported video formats for Media Sources. Check the OBS format and source guidance if a file does not load.
- Install VLC if needed. OBS requires the VLC application for VLC Video Source to appear. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If you install VLC while OBS is open, reopen OBS and check the source list again. OBS Media Sources
- Add the source. In the scene that should show the episodes, add a VLC Video Source. Add the local episode files to its playlist in the order you want them to play. OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist, unlike the single-file Media Source. OBS Media Sources
- Set predictable playback. Turn shuffle off if the episode order matters. Decide whether to loop the playlist based on whether you want playback to return to the first episode after the last one.
- Check the complete sequence. Preview playback through an episode boundary before going live. Confirm that the next file starts as expected and that the scene, audio, and overlays remain suitable. The documentation describes source capabilities, not a guarantee against playback or configuration problems.
For this setup, moving to the next episode is a playlist action, not a scene change. OBS scenes organize sources and layouts; a VLC playlist can move between its files within the same scene. OBS Sources Guide
Switch scenes when episodes change
Use scene automation only when an episode transition must also change the OBS scene—for example, to show a different title card, set of overlays, or layout. Advanced Scene Switcher is a separate OBS plugin whose macros pair conditions with actions. Its resource listing, accessed October 3, 2026, reports version 1.36.1 and a minimum OBS version of 31.1.1; check the listing for current compatibility before installing. - Install Advanced Scene Switcher and verify that your OBS version meets the plugin’s currently listed minimum.
- Create a macro with a media condition for the relevant VLC source.
- Add a scene-switch action that selects the scene intended for the next episode.
- Choose the right end condition. An individual media item ending and the entire VLC playlist ending are distinct events in the plugin’s update history. Use the item-ended condition for per-episode transitions; use playlist-ended only when the action should wait until the whole playlist has finished. Plugin update notes
- Preview the transition and verify that the scene change happens at the intended boundary. Do not rely on an untested macro during a live broadcast.
The exact labels in the plugin interface can vary by version. The plugin listing describes the general model—conditions determine when a list of actions runs—but does not establish that every installation has identical menus. Plugin resource

What this workflow does—and does not do
- It plays video files available to OBS; the documented workflow does not fetch episodes from YouTube URLs for rebroadcast. Use local media files for the playlist. OBS Media Sources
- Playlist playback or a scene-switch macro does not, by itself, establish that a YouTube livestream will end automatically when the playlist finishes. Plan to manage the broadcast end separately.
- The sources cited here do not establish YouTube account eligibility, scheduling, copyright permissions, or other platform-policy requirements. Check current YouTube guidance for those rules before broadcasting. Only use episodes and music you have the rights to stream.
- Test both the media transition and any automation under the same scene and source arrangement you intend to use live; configuration capability is not a reliability guarantee.
Troubleshooting
- VLC Video Source is missing: install VLC, ensure its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS. OBS Media Sources
- The next episode does not start: confirm the files are in the VLC playlist and that the playback order and loop choice are as intended. Preview the transition before broadcasting.
- The scene never changes: check that the macro is enabled, its media condition refers to the intended source, and its action selects the intended scene. Confirm that the chosen event is item-ended rather than playlist-ended, or vice versa, according to the transition you want. Plugin update notes
- The plugin will not install or load: compare your OBS version with the plugin resource’s current minimum requirement, which was listed as OBS Studio 31.1.1 or newer on October 3, 2026. Plugin resource
