1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOBS Studio is the best-supported free starting point for sending a church-service playlist or production to YouTube Live. The software costs nothing, but it does not host a broadcast for you: for a local setup to stay live, the church’s computer, power, internet connection and OBS feed all need to keep working.
What OBS does—and what it does not
OBS Studio is free to use, with no watermark or usage limitation, according to the OBS Project Help Portal. YouTube also lists OBS as open-source encoder software available at no charge in its encoder instructions.
In this setup, OBS is the local encoder and production tool: it sends a video feed to YouTube using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. A media playlist decides what plays next; it does not create the YouTube Live event, keep the computer powered, or reconnect a failed internet connection automatically. For continuous playback, the computer and outgoing feed must remain operational.
Choose a setup that fits your church
| Option | Best fit | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio running locally | A church that wants a free encoder, local control, or a production with cameras, microphones, graphics and scene changes. | Requires a working computer, electricity, stable upload connection and someone able to monitor the stream. OBS has no software charge; those operating costs are separate. |
| Cloud playout | A church that needs uploaded videos to continue playing without a dedicated local PC running. | YouTube’s encoder documentation lists cloud services that describe 24/7 prerecorded streaming, but their prices, availability in India and partner terms are not established here. Check those details directly before choosing one. |
For YouTube-only playback of prerecorded services, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it runs continuously without a home computer, streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free.

Set up a continuous church broadcast with OBS
1. Enable live streaming and plan the YouTube event
-
If the channel has never streamed before, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and allow for activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours. Once it is enabled, a stream can go live instantly.
-
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. A scheduled event gives viewers a shareable upcoming page and can offer reminders. The event is separate from the playlist running in OBS.
-
Open the event’s encoder or stream settings in YouTube Studio and copy the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the intended encoder and do not share it publicly.

2. Connect OBS to the event
-
Install OBS Studio from the OBS Project. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect using the stream key or the connection method shown by OBS. If YouTube provides a server URL and key for manual setup, use those exact values from the Studio event.

Build a scene with the media source or sources the service needs. Add audio and any title, logo or other graphics you use. Keep the scene simple enough for the church’s computer to encode reliably.
-
Set the output resolution and bitrate to what the computer and real upload connection can sustain. Do not choose a high bitrate just because the computer offers it: YouTube receives the outgoing feed, and OBS notes that increasing dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. If a 1080p stream is unstable, a church-service practitioner guide recommends trying 720p and leaving upload headroom; this is practical guidance, not a YouTube guarantee.

For a playlist, confirm the media source advances to the next item and loops as intended. Test audio levels, transitions and playback after restarting OBS; do not assume that the playlist will restart OBS or restore a dropped connection.
-
Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube Studio to confirm that the event receives the feed before making it public or starting the scheduled service.

3. Rehearse before the service
Midweek, verify the stream key and run a private or unlisted rehearsal with a remote viewer. Ask the viewer to check sound and scene changes, then watch the recording back. These steps are recommendations from a vendor-authored church streaming guide, not results of an independent test. They help reveal problems that can be missed when checking only the local OBS preview.

Plan for interruptions and replays
-
Local continuity: A looping playlist only repeats media while the computer, power, network and encoder feed remain available. Arrange monitoring and power/network contingencies appropriate to the church’s site; no India-wide reliability or backup requirement is established by the cited setup guidance.
-
Dropped frames: If OBS reports increasing dropped frames, investigate the internet connection and whether the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. Reduce the demand or stabilize the connection, then test again.
-
Archive length: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a broadcast that runs indefinitely; if a dependable replay matters, plan a local recording or divide the service into shorter broadcasts.
