For a 24/7 YouTube radio stream with a static image, start with YouTube’s standard live-encoder settings: RTMPS, a supported video codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube does not publish a special low-bitrate profile for still-image radio streams, so treat the figures below as starting points, test before going public, and monitor stream health.
Recommended settings for a static-image radio stream
YouTube’s general encoder guidance, current as accessed on October 3, 2026, applies; it does not specify a separate profile for a still image. A static picture can reduce visual complexity, but that is not a reason to assume YouTube will accept a lower bitrate reliably. Use the encoder’s available settings and validate the result in the Live Control Room.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS; RTMP is also listed as supported. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | Choose one supported by both your encoder and workflow. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR (constant bitrate) | Set the bitrate to fit the connection you can sustain, with headroom. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps is a practical choice for a still image | YouTube allows up to 60 fps, but does not prescribe a frame rate for radio streams with a static image. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | YouTube’s advanced-setting recommendation is 128 kbps for stereo audio. |
| Stereo sample rate | 44.1 kHz | Use this for stereo audio. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | These are YouTube’s SDR recommendations for the video feed, even when its image is still. |
The bitrate figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations, not guarantees that a particular encoder or internet connection will remain stable. The page excerpt provides no publication year; figures are reported as accessed October 3, 2026.
| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 video bitrate | AV1 or H.265 video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are video ingestion bitrates. Audio adds traffic, and real-world network conditions vary. Measure your upload speed and leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s maximum. YouTube transcodes an incoming stream into multiple output formats, so viewers’ playback formats need not match your ingest settings.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose resolution, codec, and latency
720p or 1080p
Choose 720p if its lower recommended ingest bitrate better fits a connection that must run continuously; choose 1080p when the image benefits from the extra detail and your upload can sustain the corresponding bitrate. The still image may be visually simple, but YouTube publishes no separate static-image bitrate target. Do a test at the actual settings instead of assuming a static feed can use less bandwidth.
H.264 or AV1/H.265
YouTube’s table gives different recommended video bitrates for H.264 and AV1/H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. Select a codec your encoder supports and your workflow can use. Do not choose a codec based only on the table if your encoder cannot produce it reliably.

Normal or lower latency
For radio that does not depend on real-time audience interaction, lower latency is usually not a priority. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose the latency setting in the stream settings for the audience experience you want; DVR can let viewers pause and rewind while the live stream continues.
Create and test the YouTube live stream
- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule the stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other metadata. YouTube offers public, private, and unlisted visibility.
- Copy the ingest details: In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder. The key routes the encoder’s feed to YouTube and authorizes its acceptance. Keep it private like a password; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Configure the encoder: Set protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format. Use a two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; a custom stream key can be used when manual resolution settings are needed.
- Run a test: Start with an unlisted stream or another test appropriate to your channel. Preview the incoming feed before going public. Confirm the image is framed and visible and the audio is present, clean, and continuous. Test with audio and movement similar to what the planned stream will contain.
- Go live and monitor: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and audio/video quality while the event is live. A healthy preview before launch is useful, but it does not replace monitoring during a long broadcast.
Plan for the 24/7 archive limitation
A continuous 24-hour broadcast is not a reliable way to guarantee a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep a local recording as a backup and plan archive handling separately from the live broadcast.

If you need distinct replay files, one practical option is to stop and restart on a schedule. That is an operational inference from YouTube’s archive warning, not a guarantee about how any particular session will be archived. A local recording is the safer backup when a complete copy matters.
Check music rights before broadcasting
A static image does not change the rights required for the music. YouTube’s livestream terms say providers must have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination.

Even licensed third-party music can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Before scheduling the stream, confirm with the rights owner that the license covers the planned live use, territories, duration, and any retained archive, and ask whether channel allowlisting is required. Do not treat permission to play a recording privately or publish an ordinary video as automatic permission for a continuous livestream.

- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream URL and stream key were copied correctly and that the selected protocol is supported. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate, then reduce resolution or bitrate if necessary. Retest with headroom; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring health messages.
- The image is missing, distorted, or unexpectedly scaled: Check the encoder’s resolution and frame-rate settings, its image source or scene, and the Live Control Room preview before making the event public.
- Audio is absent or unstable: Check the encoder’s selected audio input, codec, stereo configuration, and sample rate. Listen to the preview and confirm the feed remains continuous before launch.
- The stream is interrupted after music is detected: Review the rights for live and archived use and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
- The replay is incomplete or missing: YouTube warns that sessions over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if you need a complete archive; do not rely on a single day-long session to create one.
