Before you play a single Punjabi track, get written permission for the specific recordings and compositions you plan to stream. A music subscription, ownership of audio files, or a venue licence does not by itself establish the rights needed for a YouTube livestream. Then confirm that live streaming is available for your YouTube account, set up the stream in YouTube Studio, and arrange any necessary Content ID allowlisting with the rights holders.
1. Clear the music before planning the broadcast
For a commercial song, permission may be needed for both the sound recording and the underlying musical and literary works. Those rights can belong to different owners or be administered by different organizations. The rights route depends on the particular track and repertoire; do not assume one organization or licence covers every song in a Punjabi playlist.
Identify each track and its rights holders
- Make a complete track list. Record each song’s title, artist, version, recording owner if known, and the names of the composer and lyricist if known. Identify alternate versions, remixes, live recordings, and covers separately; permission for one recording does not establish permission for another.
- Ask who can authorize each use. IPRS says it licenses works for its members and collects authors’ royalty share for its author and composer members. Recording owners or administrators such as PPL, Novex, or RMPL may handle sound recordings. Contact IPRS and the relevant recording owner or authorized representative with your proposed track list and broadcast format.
- Describe the actual use. Say that the tracks will be played in a YouTube livestream from India, and ask whether the proposed permission covers YouTube’s worldwide availability. State whether the channel will be monetized, sponsored, or ad-supported, if applicable.
- Ask separately about the recording after the live ends. If you plan to leave an archive or replay available, get permission for that on-demand use as well as the live broadcast. Do not infer archive rights from live-stream permission.
IPRS lists online live streaming and internet streaming among its licensing categories. That establishes that online use has a licensing path; it does not establish that a particular IPRS licence covers every commercial recording or every YouTube use. Ask about the actual repertoire and intended use. PPL India says its on-ground licence covers on-ground use, not non-physical or digital use, and that it does not issue licences for virtual use. A venue or event licence should therefore not be treated as clearance for a YouTube stream.
India’s Copyright Act defines “communication to the public” to include making a work available for the public to see or hear, including at times chosen individually. Copyright Rules also set out a statutory broadcast procedure, but the available information does not establish whether or how that procedure applies to a particular individual YouTube music stream. Do not assume that it automatically clears a YouTube broadcast or overrides YouTube’s requirements. Ask the relevant rights holders or a qualified copyright professional to confirm the route for your use.

Get the permission in writing
Ask the authorized representative to confirm, for each relevant right, the track or repertoire covered, YouTube livestream use, territories, monetized or sponsored use if applicable, and whether a saved archive or replay is allowed. Keep the written permission and the identity of the YouTube channel it covers. If a representative cannot confirm a right or a track’s inclusion, treat that point as unresolved rather than assuming it is covered.
2. Arrange Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. When it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the matched content remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube also says a licensed stream can still be interrupted when the content owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
- Send the rights holder or authorized representative your channel identity and ask whether the channel can be allowlisted for the licensed tracks.
- Ask when the allowlisting will take effect and whether it covers all tracks and versions in your playlist. Do not assume that permission alone means Content ID will recognize it in time for the broadcast.
- Keep the response with your written licence. If a stream is interrupted, you will need to distinguish a matching or allowlisting issue from an absence of permission.
An allowlist is an operational step, not a substitute for a licence. If you do not have the underlying rights, allowlisting does not create them.

3. Check the YouTube account and create the live stream
Once rights are being handled, sign in to the YouTube account that will host the broadcast and check its current live-stream controls in YouTube Studio. The exact account eligibility steps and any activation delay are not established here, so confirm the requirements shown for your own account before announcing a start time. Use YouTube’s current Studio live controls to create the stream; follow the available prompts for its title, description, audience, and visibility rather than relying on a fixed interface path that may change.

4. Keep the programme within the permission you obtained
- Do not add an unapproved track, alternate version, or listener request just because it fits the playlist.
- Do not assume that buying a download, owning a file, or subscribing to a consumer music service grants permission to rebroadcast it.
- Do not assume a public-performance or venue licence also covers YouTube or other digital use.
- Do not leave an archive or replay up unless the permission also covers that use.
- Keep a copy of the track list, written permissions, and any allowlisting confirmation so you can answer questions about the broadcast.
5. Troubleshoot interruptions and copyright notices
| What happens | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube warns you or replaces the live picture with a placeholder after a music match. | YouTube has identified third-party content in the stream. | Follow the notice in Studio. Stop or remove the matched material if you cannot show that the use is authorized. Check that the exact recording and underlying work were included in your written permission. |
| A licensed stream is interrupted for a track you believe is cleared. | The channel may not be on the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist, or the allowlisting may not cover that track or version. | Contact the rights holder or authorized representative with the channel identity, track details, permission, and notice information. Ask them to confirm the scope and status of allowlisting. Do not restart with the same material until the issue is resolved. |
| The stream runs, but a copyright claim appears on its archive afterward. | YouTube says Content ID claims may be made after a livestream completes; permission for live use may not include on-demand use. | Check the claim and your written terms. Confirm separately whether the archive is authorized. If it is not covered, follow the applicable YouTube process and do not assume that live permission settles the archive claim. |
| You have an on-ground or event music licence, but it does not resolve a digital-use question. | The licence may not cover online streaming. PPL India says its on-ground licence does not permit digital usage. | Ask the relevant recording owner or authorized representative about digital rights, and ask IPRS about the proposed works and online use where relevant. |
| You cannot start the stream or do not see the expected live controls. | Account eligibility, activation, or current Studio setup may differ by account. | Check the current prompts and requirements in YouTube Studio for that account. The exact eligibility steps and activation timing are not established here. |
