VLC can play an internet radio feed, but the documented workflow is not simply to paste YouTube’s stream key into VLC. Use VLC to receive the station audio, then route that audio into a separate encoder that can send a video-and-audio stream to YouTube. You will also need permission to rebroadcast the station’s content and a still image or other video for the stream.
What you need—and what VLC does
The reliable setup has three parts: VLC opens the station’s audio feed, an encoder combines that audio with a picture and publishes it, and YouTube receives the encoder’s stream using the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
VideoLAN’s published streaming-features list documents output methods such as HTTP and RTP/UDP, but does not list RTMP or RTMPS. That list is not a version-specific guide and does not prove that no VLC build or plug-in can ever publish directly. It does mean the reviewed documentation does not establish a direct VLC-to-YouTube procedure. Treat VLC as the player in this workflow and use an encoder whose YouTube ingestion support and audio-routing method work on your operating system.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream.
- A station feed URL that your installed VLC version can open. A station’s web-page address may lead to a player rather than the underlying audio feed.
- An encoder that supports YouTube’s RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and can receive the audio playing in VLC.
- A still image or other video to accompany the audio.
- Permission to retransmit the station’s audio on YouTube, including any music rights required for your territory and for an archived replay.
Check channel eligibility and rebroadcast rights
Confirm YouTube livestream access
YouTube’s published eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s access before building the event; the encoder cannot make an ineligible channel live.

Get permission for the station feed
A public listen link is not proof that you may rebroadcast the audio. Check the station’s terms and obtain the necessary permissions for the station’s programming, music, performers, record labels, publishers and other rights holders. YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to represent that they have the necessary rights to exploit the live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even when you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid an interruption. Copyright claims can also arrive after a stream ends. Unlisted status and a publicly accessible radio feed do not remove these risks.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
These requirements do not determine whether a particular station or program may be retransmitted: that depends on the station, repertoire, rights and territories involved. If you cannot verify permission, do not rebroadcast the feed.
Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from the encoder setup. YouTube uses these to tell the encoder where to send the feed and to accept it.
- Enter both values in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Use the settings and labels shown by your current encoder; this guide does not assume a particular encoder or software version.
- Keep the stream key private, as you would a password. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event.
Open the station feed in VLC and route its audio
- Find the station’s direct audio-feed URL, if it provides one. If the station only gives you a web player, check its instructions or contact the station for a supported feed URL; do not assume the web-page address will open as a media stream.
- Open the feed in VLC and confirm that it plays continuously. If VLC cannot open it, resolve the feed URL or station-access issue before configuring the encoder.
- Set up an audio route that lets your chosen encoder receive the sound VLC is playing. The exact method depends on the operating system, encoder and VLC version. Use a capture or virtual-device method documented for those specific versions; the sources for this workflow do not validate a particular device, menu path or operating-system setup.
- In the encoder, select that audio input. Check its meter or preview while VLC is playing so you can confirm the encoder is receiving the station audio—not merely that the sound is audible from your speakers.
Add a picture and configure YouTube-compatible encoding
YouTube’s encoder workflow expects a video feed with audio. For an audio-led stream, configure the encoder to send a still image or other suitable visual along with VLC’s audio. Before starting the event, check the encoder preview for both a visible picture and continuous sound.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.

| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Ingestion protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Supported video codecs | H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. |
| Frame rate | YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Stereo audio sample rate | Recommended: 44.1 kHz. |
| Stereo audio bitrate | Recommended: 128 kbps. |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not VLC-specific settings. The cited guidance does not prescribe a video bitrate for your particular resolution or encoder, so follow the current guidance for the output mode you choose rather than guessing. A static image does not need a high frame rate simply to make the radio audio work.
Test, start and monitor the stream
- Before a public broadcast, test the complete chain: station feed in VLC, audio reaching the encoder, picture in the encoder preview, and the correct YouTube event receiving the feed.
- Make the test comparable to the intended stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual event, reviewing stream-health messages and monitoring quality.
- Start the encoder output and check the event’s preview. If YouTube is waiting for a preview or a manual confirmation before the public event begins, complete the prompt in Live Control Room.
- Monitor audio continuity and YouTube’s stream-health messages while the event is live. Leave enough upload capacity for the encoder’s outgoing feed; an unstable connection can affect stream health.
- When finished, stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Troubleshoot common failures
- VLC will not play the station: The address may be the station’s web page, not a media-feed URL, or the station may require a different access method. Look for the station’s supported feed address or ask the station; do not substitute a guessed URL.
- You can hear the station, but the encoder has no audio: VLC playback and encoder input are separate. Check that the encoder is listening to the audio route you configured, then verify its input meter or preview while the feed is playing.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder: Check that the event’s server URL and stream key were copied correctly and entered in the encoder’s YouTube settings. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
- The encoder has audio but no picture: The stream still needs a video feed. Check that the selected still image or other visual is active in the encoder output and appears in its preview.
- The event has an encoder preview but is not public: Check Live Control Room for a pending preview or manual Go Live action, and confirm the event was created or scheduled as intended.
- Audio drops or stream health warns of delivery problems: Check that VLC is still receiving the station and that the computer’s outgoing connection can sustain the encoder feed. YouTube’s stream-health messages can help distinguish delivery trouble from a source-feed interruption.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright warning: The feed may contain material detected by YouTube’s copyright systems. Stop retransmitting unless you have the required rights and have resolved any applicable Content ID allowlisting issue with the rights holder.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for uploaded recordings and playlists, not for taking a live internet-radio feed from VLC or broadcasting from a camera. If you have an authorized recording of a radio program and want that recording to loop as a YouTube livestream, upload it, add your YouTube stream key once and go live. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
