You can run a pre-recorded YouTube livestream from an Intel NUC by keeping the NUC and an encoder online, looping or scheduling video files as the encoder’s source, and sending the output to a YouTube Live event. The exact NUC model, encoder, and playlist method matter: confirm the device’s capabilities, test the media loop and connection, and plan how you will detect and recover from an interruption before leaving the stream unattended.
What you need before starting
- An Intel NUC or compatible mini PC that can encode your chosen output at the settings you intend to use.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with live streaming enabled.
- Video and audio files you have the rights to stream, plus encoder software that can play them continuously or schedule them.
- A stable internet connection with sufficient outbound upload capacity, preferably wired Ethernet for a fixed installation.
- A plan for monitoring the stream and recovering from an encoder, source, power, or network interruption.
1. Enable and check YouTube live streaming
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your intended launch. Check the channel’s eligibility and live-streaming status in YouTube Studio: YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.
2. Identify the exact NUC model and its capabilities
“Intel NUC” covers different generations and configurations; it is not enough information to infer a supported resolution, codec, or encoding performance. Find the device’s exact product code and consult its Intel product specifications. Codec and media capabilities can vary by device and configuration. Intel Quick Sync Video provides hardware-assisted media encoding and decoding only when supported processor graphics are enabled and available. See Intel Quick Sync Video documentation.
Choose settings your particular NUC can sustain, including when it is playing the source and encoding the outgoing stream at the same time. Intel’s capability documentation is not a benchmark for your assembled system, and there is no single performance figure that applies to every NUC.

3. Prepare a continuous prerecorded source
Install an encoder on the NUC and configure it to use your prerecorded video. Depending on the software, you may be able to loop one file, make a playlist, or schedule multiple files. The exact controls differ by encoder and operating system, so test your selected setup rather than assuming that a playlist will continue indefinitely.
- Play through the end of each file and confirm the next file starts as expected, without an unintended pause or dead air.
- Check audio levels and continuity, aspect ratio, orientation, and transitions. Confirm that the output does not crop or distort the documentary footage.
- Test what happens if a file is missing, the playlist ends, or the encoder is restarted. Decide whether playback resumes automatically and how you will notice if it does not.
- Use only media you are authorized to stream. A video being available online does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.
YouTube describes encoders as either software or hardware and explains that the selected encoder must receive the stream server URL and key. Its overview is at Set up a live stream with an encoder.
4. Create the YouTube Live event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details appropriate to your channel.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Use the RTMPS server address where the encoder supports it.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder’s output and wait for the incoming stream to appear in Live Control Room’s preview. Start the event when the preview and event settings are correct.

5. Set output quality and verify the preview
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings to choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suitable for your NUC, connection, and audience. YouTube’s guidance includes constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options subject to protocol and device support, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP(S). Do not assume every NUC or encoder supports every codec.

YouTube recommends testing the setup, checking event access through channel or watch pages, and monitoring audio and video quality; see Streaming tips.
6. Make the 24/7 operation resilient
A 24/7 stream is an operating setup, not just an encoder setting. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream and recommends keeping 20% spare upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. Check the connection’s upload speed at the location and leave that margin; download speed alone does not show whether the outbound connection is adequate.

- Use a stable connection and avoid other uploads that could consume the available bandwidth.
- Decide who or what checks that the YouTube event remains live, the media is advancing, and audio and video are still present.
- Test what you will do after a network outage, encoder failure, or NUC restart. Verify that the encoder and media source resume as expected; do not assume an automatic restart without testing it.
- For a fixed installation, a UPS and Ethernet cable are optional ways to reduce exposure to brief power or Wi-Fi interruptions. Neither is a YouTube requirement.
7. Plan recordings separately from the live stream
YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on YouTube for a complete archive of a continuous broadcast. If you need a full recording, arrange and test a separate recording workflow, including where the files will be stored and how much space they will consume. NUC setup or dedicated hardware?
Using a NUC gives you a general-purpose computer to run the encoder and manage the media, but you are responsible for the computer, software, connection, and operational checks. YouTube’s encoder list also names the AJA HELO Plus, whose PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Consider purchase and operating cost, setup complexity, local control, playlist and scheduling needs, and how you will monitor or recover the stream. YouTube will not let the channel go live
Check channel verification, live-streaming eligibility, and restrictions in the past 90 days. If this is first-time activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.

The encoder does not connect
Confirm that the event is configured in Live Control Room, the server URL and stream key match that event, and the encoder is using the right RTMP(S) settings. If the key was exposed, reset it and replace the saved key in the encoder.
The stream buffers, drops, or becomes unstable
Check actual outbound capacity, not just download speed. Reduce the stream bitrate if needed and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom above the total bitrate. Check for other uploads or network interruptions, then test again.
The preview is black, silent, distorted, or stops at a file boundary
Check the encoder’s selected source and audio device, then verify that the files play and the playlist or loop advances in the chosen software. Confirm the aspect ratio and output settings, and watch the preview through a file transition before going unattended.
The stream returns after a failure but the video does not
Test media playback and encoder restart behavior separately from YouTube reconnection. A successful reconnection does not prove the source playlist resumed; monitor both the Live Control Room preview and the playing content.
The live event has no complete archive
Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a separate recording workflow if a full-length archive is important, and verify that it has sufficient storage.
