YouTube usually rejects a live stream’s resolution when the video dimensions your encoder sends do not match the resolution selected in YouTube Live Control Room’s ingestion settings. Check the stream-health message, compare the actual output width and height with the selected resolution, and make them agree. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not identify a separate resolution rule for streams running 24/7.
Start with the exact stream-health error
In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the stream-health message and its timestamp. If it says “Incorrect video size (resolution),” check the output dimensions first. An error shown alongside it may instead identify a different issue, such as bitrate, codec, audio, frame rate, keyframes, or a mismatch between primary and backup feeds. YouTube says unresolved errors continue to appear; critical errors can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems, while moderate errors can reduce quality. YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance describes these conditions.
Match the encoder’s output dimensions to YouTube’s selection
- Read the resolution selected for ingestion. Open the stream’s Ingestion Settings in Live Control Room and note the selected resolution.
- Check what the encoder actually sends. Look at its output width and height, not only the source video’s resolution or a preset’s name.
- Make the two values match. Either change the encoder’s output dimensions or select the matching ingestion resolution, then preview the stream and check its health again.
For example, an encoder sending 1920 × 1080 should not be paired with a 1280 × 720 ingestion selection. YouTube’s guidance specifies that the sent video must have the height and width of the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings. Its error guide explains the mismatch; its encoder-settings page says resolution and frame rate are normally detected automatically. If you need to set resolution manually, YouTube documents creating a custom stream key and enabling manual settings under Stream Resolution.
Choose a resolution your connection can sustain
A matching resolution can still have stream-health problems if the bitrate is unsuitable or your connection cannot sustain it. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these examples; they are guidance, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection will hold steady:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Video mode | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send; do not apply one bitrate to every mode. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the available connection and says to consider lowering the selected resolution if there is not enough bandwidth for it.
Check the other encoder settings YouTube flags
A resolution alert may appear with a separate configuration problem. YouTube’s current English encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends progressive scan, square pixels, and keyframes every two seconds, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Follow the page for the protocol and codec you use, since supported settings and bitrate recommendations depend on the mode.

- Scan type: Send progressive video rather than interlaced video.
- Frame rate and keyframes: Check the selected frame rate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance.
- Bitrate: Confirm that it fits the codec, resolution, and frame rate, and that your upload connection can sustain it.
- Primary and backup: If using stream failover, make sure both feeds use matching settings.
Test before relying on a continuous stream
Preview the stream and monitor Live Control Room’s health messages before leaving it to run. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality reliable for the connection. If you have a primary and backup feed, YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing failover by stopping the primary feed or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player switches to the backup. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and live-streaming tips.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is part of a broader effort to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not camera footage, and your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The stream uses the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only; it does not correct a resolution mismatch in your encoder or Live Control Room settings. See StreamNeo or calculate upload time before uploading. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Does fixing the setting require new equipment?
The official error guidance points to correcting stream configuration, not buying hardware. YouTube’s general live-streaming tips also say expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. First identify the exact health error and verify the settings; the information available here does not establish an equipment purchase as a resolution fix.
