For 1080p live ingest, use 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps or 17 Mbps for H.264 at 60 fps. With AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s recommended values are 10 Mbps at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s live-stream ingest recommendations, not uploaded-video encoding settings. A 24/7 schedule does not require a different bitrate; choose by the stream’s actual frame rate and codec.
Choose the bitrate by codec and frame rate
YouTube publishes different recommended live ingest bitrates for 1080p depending on the codec and frame rate. Use the row matching what your encoder actually sends:
| Ingest codec | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended live ingest values; the page reviewed did not state a publication year and was accessed in 2026. Use the 30 fps recommendation for a 30 fps encode. Do not select the 60 fps value unless the stream is actually encoded at 60 fps. YouTube transcodes an incoming live feed into playback formats for different devices, so the ingest setting is not a promise that every viewer receives the same bitrate. Video and rate control
- Resolution: 1920 Ă— 1080.
- Frame rate: Match the source and encode rate, such as 30 or 60 fps.
- Bitrate: Select the value from the table for the codec and frame rate.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
Keyframes, protocol, and audio
- Keyframes: Set an interval of 2 seconds. YouTube says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS where the encoder supports it.
- Audio: For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3, and 128 kbps for stereo audio.
See the current YouTube live encoder settings for the supported ingest guidance. Bitrate recommendations apply to the incoming live feed; they should not be confused with settings for uploading a finished video.

Allow enough upload capacity
The video bitrate is not the entire network load. YouTube advises keeping about 20% upload capacity beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate. For a 14 Mbps video stream, 20% headroom gives a simple minimum of 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity before adding audio, backup feeds, or other traffic. Calculate the margin from the total outgoing bitrate when those additional streams or uses are present. YouTube’s encoder and network guidance
A connection that barely meets the video bitrate can still fail when its capacity fluctuates. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream health indicators while it runs. A suitable bitrate cannot prevent a stalled source, encoder, or connection.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
A single continuous 24-hour broadcast exceeds YouTube’s 12-hour automatic-archive window. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance also warns that rewind can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. These limitations affect archives and rewind, not the bitrate needed for live ingest. If viewers need an on-demand copy or dependable rewind, divide the schedule into shorter sessions and keep a local recording as a backup. YouTube’s live stream archive guidance

You can send an encoder feed to YouTube using software or hardware; no special purchase is needed just to set the bitrate. YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus and describes its PlayToStream function as a way to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. This is an optional hardware workflow, not a bitrate requirement. YouTube also describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams. YouTube Live

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems
- Stream health reports connection instability: Check available upload capacity against the total outgoing bitrate plus headroom. Reduce competing network use or choose a lower supported encode setting if the connection cannot sustain the target.
- The stream buffers or drops despite adequate measured speed: Check for fluctuations, packet loss, encoder stalls, and source playback interruptions. A speed result alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable for a continuous broadcast.
- Motion looks poor: Confirm the stream is encoded at the source’s real frame rate and that the selected codec and bitrate row match. Do not use a 60 fps setting for a 30 fps encode simply to raise the bitrate.
- The archive is missing or rewind is unavailable: Check whether the continuous session exceeded 12 hours. For archive and DVR needs, schedule shorter sessions and retain a local recording.
