OBS does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime: plan to monitor the stream and recover if the encoder, source, or connection fails. Before going live, clear rights for live streaming and any replay, then test the complete setup privately.
Before you begin: channel access and music rights
Confirm that the channel can stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Activate live streaming ahead of your planned launch, rather than discovering an eligibility issue on the day.
Clear every recording and visual for the intended uses
Use only music, album art, lyrics, footage, and other visuals for which you have the necessary permissions. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the rights needed for worldwide use, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Check that your agreements cover live streaming, rebroadcast, and any archive or later on-demand use; permission for one use does not automatically establish permission for the others. Keep written records of the permissions.
A licence alone may not prevent an interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask the owner to allowlist your channel before launch. Territorial restrictions alone may not prevent a live-stream interruption.

Choose the stream format and plan for the archive
One file or a playlist
A single authorized file has fewer playback elements to troubleshoot. A playlist can provide variety, but each transition and the end-of-list behavior need testing. Use the OBS media-source documentation for source behavior, and verify the controls available in your installed OBS version: options depend on whether you are using one file or a playlist.
One continuous event or shorter events
A single 24-hour event can give viewers one continuous destination, but do not assume YouTube will create a complete replay from it. YouTube’s production guidance says streams up to 12 hours are automatically turned into VOD; for longer streams, the team should record and manually upload the replay. If the archive matters, plan a local recording and check that the file is growing during the broadcast.

Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube Live
- Create the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming connection settings. Treat the key like a password; reset it if you think it has been exposed.
- Build the playback scene: Add the authorized local media file or playlist as a source in OBS. Set the source to repeat or loop as appropriate for your chosen media and installed OBS version. Confirm what happens when a file ends and, for a playlist, when the final item ends.
- Check picture and sound: Watch the scene and listen through a complete file ending or playlist transition. Make sure the music does not stop, the picture does not go blank, and audio levels remain appropriate between tracks.
- Configure the encoder: Choose a resolution and frame rate your upload connection can sustain. Set the codec and bitrate using YouTube’s guidance below; do not select a higher-quality output merely because OBS offers it.
- Run a private test: Start an unlisted test stream. Check the Live Control Room preview, OBS audio meters, stream health, playback transitions, public-facing watch page, and local recording if enabled. YouTube advises testing before going live and checking that the local archive file grows.
- Start the public stream: Once the preview and watch page look and sound right, change the broadcast visibility or create the intended public event in YouTube Studio. Keep OBS connected and monitor stream health after launch.
Use encoder settings YouTube recommends
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate, and choose RTMPS where available.

These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026—not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer will sustain the stream. YouTube also lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced settings guidance. Leave upload capacity in reserve: its streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. A stable lower-bitrate stream is preferable to an ambitious setting that repeatedly disconnects.

Keep the stream running and recover from failures
- Computer or power failure: OBS needs the streaming computer to remain on and operating. Keep the machine powered, prevent sleep or shutdown, and consider the reliability of the power supply for a continuous run.
- Connection drops: A network disruption can break the stream. Monitor stream health, preserve upload headroom, and be ready to reconnect OBS and restart the broadcast if needed.
- Media stops or transitions badly: Re-test the exact source and playlist behavior in the installed OBS version. Check the scene after file endings and playlist transitions, not only during the first minutes.
- YouTube reports a copyright match: Do not assume that a licence will automatically prevent an interruption. Contact the relevant rights holder about Content ID allowlisting and resolve the match through the appropriate rights process.
- The stream is live but the replay is incomplete: A 24-hour event exceeds the period covered by YouTube’s automatic VOD guidance. Use a local recording for a complete copy and verify that it is being written successfully.
- The stream key may be compromised: Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement before reconnecting.
These steps improve your ability to detect and respond to faults; they do not establish a guaranteed 24/7 uptime level.

Estimate upload time and plan storage
Uploading a long playlist can take substantial time, especially if the connection’s upload speed is limited. Use the upload-time calculator to estimate the transfer before scheduling a launch. If you enable local recording, also make sure the destination drive has enough free space and check that the recording file continues to grow.
