To prevent a prerecorded YouTube 24/7 stream from holding on the last frame between clips, keep the encoder sending video and place a moving standby scene between playlist items. Set up the handoff so the standby scene is already active while one clip ends and the next loads; do not stop and restart the YouTube stream for each video. YouTube does not document a specific control for this frozen-frame problem, so test the transition in your own encoder before going live.
Why a 24/7 stream freezes between videos
The encoder—not YouTube’s playlist—produces the video feed YouTube receives. If the encoder has no new picture to send at the end of a clip, the last frame may remain visible while the next source opens. A still image at that moment does not, by itself, identify the cause: it could be a gap in the production handoff or a wider playback, encoder, or connection issue.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a continuous 24/7 feed and explains that an encoder can continue transmitting even after a separate broadcast resource ends. That supports keeping the encoder feed active while changing what it shows, but does not prescribe a particular OBS playlist or transition setup. Google’s Live Streaming API guide
Put a moving standby scene between clips
Use an active scene that produces changing video during the handoff instead of leaving the outgoing clip’s final frame on screen. A short looped motion graphic or animated “back shortly” slate can serve as the standby. This is practical production advice based on the encoder’s role in sending the feed; it is not a named YouTube setting or an officially documented fix.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keep the encoder session connected. Send one continuous feed to YouTube across clip changes rather than ending and restarting the live stream for every item.
- Prepare a standby scene. In your encoding software, create or select a scene with ongoing picture movement, such as a looped background or animated slate. Make sure the scene itself continues playing.
- Arrange the handoff. Switch to the standby scene before the outgoing clip ends, or ensure it becomes active while the next file opens. Then switch to the next clip once it is ready. The exact controls depend on the encoder and playlist workflow you use.
- Rehearse the actual playlist. Check the outgoing clip, standby scene, next clip, and audio together. Look for gaps, a held last frame, missing sound, or overlapping audio.
- Test before the production broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
Check whether the problem is only at clip changes
Compare what your encoder preview shows with YouTube’s live preview and stream-health indicators. If the encoder preview freezes at the same handoff, inspect the source or scene transition first. If it stays in motion while YouTube’s preview freezes, check the connection and stream health rather than assuming the playlist is at fault. YouTube’s API documentation describes an active stream status as indicating that its servers are receiving data from the encoder; it also documents preview testing and distinct testing and live broadcast states. If freezing happens during clips as well as between them, check network throughput, encoder load, and source playback separately. In OBS, an increasing “Dropped frames” counter and a yellow or red connection indicator point to an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says it may drop video frames to avoid buffering when this happens. OBS guidance on dropped frames

Use sound ingest settings, but don’t mistake them for a transition fix
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For RTMP or RTMPS, it lists constant bitrate (CBR), recommends RTMPS, and advises choosing a bitrate suited to your internet connection. These settings support a healthy ingest; they do not create a standby scene or control the timing of playlist transitions. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance
- Keyframes: Set the frequency to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds, following YouTube’s published guidance.
- Rate control: Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS as YouTube specifies.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS where your encoder and workflow support it.
- Bitrate: Choose a value your connection can sustain. If OBS reports dropped frames, lower the demand or resolve the connection issue rather than treating a standby scene as the remedy.
Troubleshoot common freeze patterns
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The last frame appears only between clips | Encoder preview and scene or playlist handoff | Ensure a moving standby scene is active during the gap, then rehearse the same media transition. |
| The picture freezes during clips too | OBS dropped-frame counter, connection indicator, network throughput, encoder load, source playback | Separate connection problems from local encoding or media playback problems; if OBS reports dropped frames, address the connection’s ability to sustain the configured bitrate. |
| The encoder preview moves, but YouTube’s preview freezes | YouTube preview and stream-health messages | Monitor stream health and review YouTube’s messages during a test; confirm the encoder is still sending data. |
| Picture moves but audio cuts out or overlaps | Audio behavior at outgoing clip, standby scene, and next clip | Rehearse with representative audio and movement, as YouTube recommends, and adjust the handoff in the encoder workflow. |
A frozen viewer image alone does not establish whether the cause is a specific OBS playlist setting, YouTube transcoding, network conditions, or a defective media file. Use the encoder preview, YouTube preview, and health indicators to narrow it down.
