Back in Action 2 was not on Netflix’s confirmed slate in the comments director Seth Gordon gave in an interview reported on January 24, 2025. Gordon said Netflix had not discussed a sequel with him, though he had ideas for one and hoped it could happen. Those remarks are dated: they do not establish whether Netflix has since made a decision.
What Seth Gordon said about a sequel
In a January 24, 2025 report, TheWrap recounted Gordon’s comments to Entertainment Weekly. At that point, Netflix had not brought a follow-up up with the director. Gordon said, “They won’t even acknowledge the idea of a sequel yet!” and added, “So if you put in a good word, maybe there’s a chance.”
Gordon also described possible story directions: he was interested in seeing Emily and Matt navigate their relationship with their children as the kids reach teenage milestones, and he had ideas about Emily’s mysterious father. These were creative possibilities, not confirmed plot details for an approved film.
The comments answer what Gordon thought in early 2025, not what Netflix may have decided afterward. The information available here does not establish a later greenlight, cancellation, release date, or production status.

Why the ending fuels sequel speculation
Spoilers for the ending of Back in Action: After the Reynolds family returns home, Baron arrives and asks Emily to help recruit her father to find Chuck’s missing body. Emily appears surprised that Matt does not know about her father, leaving a family-history question unresolved. The film ends soon after.
That exchange gives a sequel a clear story thread to pick up, but an open plot thread is not evidence that a sequel has been approved. TheWrap’s account discusses the ending alongside Gordon’s remarks; neither turns the film’s hook into a Netflix commitment.

TheWrap reported that Back in Action received 46.8 million views in its first three days on Netflix, describing the debut as the streamer’s biggest weekend debut for an English-language movie since The Adam Project in 2022. That is a figure reported by TheWrap in January 2025, not a current measure or confirmation that Netflix ordered a sequel.
