Use two recovery layers: FFmpeg’s fifo muxer can retry some failed output connections while FFmpeg is still running, and a process supervisor such as systemd can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. Neither layer proves that YouTube has restored the broadcast, so check Live Control Room or the public watch page after recovery.
Choose the recovery layer for the failure
| What failed | Recovery layer | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Output writes or network connection fail, but FFmpeg remains running | FFmpeg fifo muxer |
Can retry selected output failures within the running process. |
| The FFmpeg process exits | External supervisor, such as systemd | Can start FFmpeg again according to its restart policy. |
These layers can complement each other: FIFO recovery handles some interruptions without restarting the process; a supervisor handles eligible process exits. Neither confirms that the stream is visible, healthy, or accessible on YouTube.
Enable retries for output interruptions with FFmpeg FIFO
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can buffer output and attempt recovery for certain output errors. Recovery is opt-in: attempt_recovery defaults to false. Consult the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build with ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo; online FFmpeg documentation is rolling, and option availability or behavior should be verified against the version you run.
FFmpeg documents this generic RTMP pattern:
ffmpeg [input options] -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f fifo -fifo_format flv
-attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1
rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY
This is an illustration of FIFO output recovery, not a YouTube-specific guarantee. Replace the input, encoding options, server URL, and key with your setup. FIFO options are output/muxer options; confirm their placement and accepted syntax with your installed build. Do not expose a real stream key in a public command example, log, or support post.

Set retry behavior deliberately
| Option | Documented behavior | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
attempt_recovery |
Enables recovery attempts; default is false. | Enable it if you want FIFO to retry recoverable output failures. |
recovery_wait_time |
Delay between attempts; default is five seconds. | Choose a delay appropriate to a temporary interruption rather than retrying needlessly fast. |
max_recovery_attempts |
Maximum successive failures; zero means unlimited. | Decide whether a persistent failure should eventually exit and allow the supervisor to take over. |
recover_any_error |
Attempts recovery regardless of error type; default is false. Some errors are usually permanent. | Do not enable it on the assumption that every failure is temporary. |
drop_pkts_on_overflow |
Drops queued packets rather than blocking when the queue fills. | Accept possible gaps or omissions only if continued processing is preferable to a stall. |
restart_with_keyframe |
Can wait for a keyframe after recovery; default is false. | Evaluate its effect with your video stream and playback behavior. |
FFmpeg’s documented example enables drop_pkts_on_overflow. That choice can keep processing moving by omitting packets when the queue fills; it is not automatically right for a radio stream where uninterrupted audio matters. Test the trade-off with your actual input and output.
Restart FFmpeg after the process exits with systemd
If FFmpeg crashes or exits, FIFO cannot relaunch the process. On a Linux host using systemd, configure a service to run FFmpeg in the foreground and use a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay. Exact unit directives, restart limits, permissions, environment, and command depend on the host and systemd version; verify them against the installed systemd documentation before deploying.

Keep FFmpeg itself as the supervised foreground process where practical. Wrapper scripts or processes that fork can make it harder for the service manager’s reported state to match the encoder’s actual state.
- Create a service unit. Put your FFmpeg command in the unit’s
ExecStart, along with the appropriate user, working directory, and environment for your host. Keep the stream key out of world-readable files and avoid exposing it in logs. - Set a controlled restart policy. Use
Restart=on-failureand choose aRestartSec=delay suited to your operation. Check the installed systemd manual for restart limits and related behavior; defaults and available directives can vary. - Load and start the service. After creating or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit configuration, then start the service using the commands appropriate to your distribution. Confirm the service manager reports the expected state.
- Inspect service logs after a failure. Find why FFmpeg stopped before relying on repeated retries. Fix persistent input, permissions, invalid arguments, stream-key, or connectivity problems rather than letting a restart loop obscure them.
This is a configuration pattern, not a universal ready-to-paste unit: the correct paths, account, environment, command, and limits are specific to the machine.

Verify YouTube received the restarted stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream’s server URL and stream key in the encoder configuration, then check the preview and stream monitoring after FFmpeg reconnects.
- Confirm the broadcast is accessible on the intended watch page. A running service or FFmpeg process alone does not establish that viewers can see or hear the stream.
- If YouTube reports a start error, check that the encoder is using the intended current stream key. Reset a compromised key and update the encoder with the replacement.
For ingestion troubleshooting, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance specifies CBR bitrate mode and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These settings concern the encoder feed; they do not restart a crashed FFmpeg process.
Protect the stream key and the broadcast
- Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret: do not post it in public service files, command logs, screenshots, or support requests.
- Store it with permissions appropriate to the host account that runs FFmpeg.
- If you suspect it was exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration.
- Test and monitor the stream after configuring recovery. A reconnect can succeed at the process level while the YouTube preview or public broadcast remains unavailable.
Troubleshoot recovery that does not restore the stream
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg stays alive, but output does not recover | FIFO recovery may not be enabled, or the error may not be recoverable under the selected settings. | Check the installed FIFO muxer help, FFmpeg logs, and whether attempt_recovery is enabled. Avoid broad retries for errors that are likely permanent. |
| FFmpeg exits and remains down | No supervisor is restarting it, or the restart policy does not apply to that exit. | Check service state and logs, then verify the unit’s restart policy and host-specific limits. |
| The service repeatedly restarts | A persistent input, permission, argument, key, or network problem may be causing each attempt to fail. | Use the first failure in the logs to identify and fix the underlying error; avoid an uncontrolled retry loop. |
| FFmpeg runs again but YouTube has no preview or stream | The process is up, but YouTube may not be receiving a valid feed or the broadcast may not be accessible. | Check Live Control Room, the watch page, the current key, and the encoder’s ingestion settings. |
| Video resumes with a delay or discontinuity | Recovery and queue behavior can affect packet continuity; overflow dropping may omit packets. | Review FIFO recovery options and test whether a different overflow or keyframe strategy better fits the stream. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube radio stream built from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing an always-on computer and FFmpeg supervisor: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
