How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Going While Replacing the Video File

Keep OBS and the existing YouTube live event running; change or advance the video source inside OBS instead of stopping the encoder or ending the event. Use an OBS Media Source for a single local file, or a VLC Video source for a prepared playlist. The stream should remain on the same ingest session, but neither YouTube nor OBS promises that every source change will be seamless—test the transition before relying on it live.

Why changing the source is different from ending the stream

Your encoder sends a continuous audio-and-video feed to YouTube. The video file is content inside that feed, so replacing it in the encoder is different from stopping the feed itself. YouTube’s encoder instructions say, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Keep the encoder output running and leave the existing event open in Live Control Room while you switch sources. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the ingest workflow.

Changing a source without ending the event is the practical approach, not a guarantee of uninterrupted frames or audio. The official guidance does not promise a zero-frame interruption for live file replacement. Your result can depend on the OBS scene and source setup, the file, and how the transition is performed.

Choose how the replacement video will be loaded

For one replacement at a time: OBS Media Source

Media Source plays a local media file in an OBS scene. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, along with loop and restart-playback options. Use it when you want to select a file as needed or loop one file. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.

For a planned sequence: OBS VLC Video

A VLC Video source can play multiple files from a playlist and loop the playlist. It requires VLC to be installed, with an architecture that matches your OBS installation. Choose it if the upcoming videos are known and you want the sequence prepared ahead of time. OBS documents the source and its requirements.

Replace the video without stopping the YouTube event

  1. Prepare the existing YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and configure the event and stream key. Keep the same event and ingest settings for this session. The stream key is the credential used to connect your encoder to YouTube; handle it as a private credential. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
  2. Set up the source in OBS. Add the current video as a Media Source, or create a VLC Video source and add the planned files to its playlist. Make sure the intended source is in the scene being sent to YouTube.
  3. Start the encoder and check the preview. In OBS, use the YouTube stream URL and stream key for the configured event. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room, then start the event as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder guide describes entering the server URL and key and checking the preview.
  4. Change or advance the video inside OBS. Select the replacement Media Source or advance to the next VLC playlist item while OBS continues streaming. Do not stop OBS’s stream output or end the YouTube event to make the file change.
  5. Check the transition. Watch the Live Control Room preview and listen to the outgoing audio. Confirm that the new video is visible, its audio is usable, and the previous source is not still audible underneath. If you record a local archive, check that it is still being written.

Exact source-edit controls can vary by OBS version and scene setup. If you replace the file path in an existing source rather than selecting another source or playlist item, verify the new file is loaded before relying on it.

Test before using the transition on an important stream

Rehearse with an unlisted or test stream. YouTube recommends previewing and testing the stream, monitoring its quality, and checking the archive. Its guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive rule, not a promise that changing a source will be seamless. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder guidance.

  • Confirm the replacement video and audio appear in the Live Control Room preview.
  • Listen for silence, unexpected audio, or overlapping audio from the old source.
  • Check that OBS is still sending the feed and that the YouTube event remains active.
  • If recording locally, verify that the archive file continues to grow and plays back correctly.

Troubleshooting a failed or rough change

The YouTube event ended

Check whether OBS’s stream output was stopped or its connection dropped. YouTube identifies stopping content from the encoder as the end action. Reconnect or start a new event only if needed; changing the media source alone should not require ending the current event.

The preview is black or the new video does not appear

Confirm that the replacement source is enabled and visible in the active OBS scene, that the file path points to an available file, and that the file can play. For VLC Video, check that VLC is installed and matches the OBS architecture.

The old audio continues or audio overlaps

Inspect the active scene and audio sources. Disable or remove the old source if it is still contributing audio, and confirm the replacement’s audio is enabled. Listen to the actual outgoing stream, not only the local preview.

The video changes but the stream briefly stutters

A gap-free change is not guaranteed. Test a different source arrangement or transition before the next important broadcast, and avoid stopping the encoder while troubleshooting if keeping the existing event is essential.
