Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized character based on artist and activist Suze Rotolo. The film follows Dylan’s rise through the New York folk scene from 1961 to 1965 and his shift toward electric performance.
The main cast, compared with the real people
Searchlight’s official film page confirms the central actor-role pairings. The people portrayed were part of Dylan’s musical and personal world, but the film dramatizes events rather than reproducing every encounter as a documentary record.
| Actor | Role in the film | Real person and connection to Dylan |
|---|---|---|
| Timothée Chalamet | Bob Dylan | Dylan emerged in the New York folk scene in the early 1960s and moved toward electric music. The film’s main period, 1961–1965, included six studio albums by Dylan, according to British Vogue. |
| Edward Norton | Pete Seeger | The folk singer, songwriter, and activist was an early mentor to Dylan. Seeger was unsettled by Dylan’s turn to electric music in 1965. |
| Elle Fanning | Sylvie Russo | Russo is a fictionalized character based on Suze Rotolo, the artist and activist who dated Dylan in the early 1960s. |
| Monica Barbaro | Joan Baez | Baez was already an established folk performer when Dylan arrived. She recorded some of his early songs, brought him onstage, and was romantically involved with him for a time. |
| Boyd Holbrook | Johnny Cash | Cash and Dylan admired one another, corresponded before meeting in person in the mid-1960s, and later recorded “Girl from the North Country” together. They remained friends until Cash’s death in 2003. |
| Scoot McNairy | Woody Guthrie | Guthrie was one of Dylan’s idols. Dylan visited him while he was ill in New Jersey and later honored him in “Song to Woody.” |
Why Elle Fanning’s character is called Sylvie Russo
Sylvie Russo is not the name of a historical person. The character is based on Suze Rotolo, whose political interests included civil rights and nuclear disarmament. Rotolo appeared with Dylan on the cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. Vogue reports that Dylan requested the name change; the character should therefore be understood as a fictionalized portrayal, not a claim that every scene reproduces Rotolo’s life.
Vogue also notes that Rotolo did not attend the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, despite Sylvie’s presence in the film’s Newport sequence. Readers interested in Rotolo’s own account can look to her 2008 memoir, A Freewheelin’ Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties.

What the film changes about the history
The film’s central arc runs from Dylan’s arrival in New York in 1961 to the controversial electric set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. Some scenes and song placements depart from the historical record, so the film works best as a character-centered drama rather than a scene-by-scene documentary.
Dylan’s first meeting with Woody Guthrie
The film depicts Dylan meeting Guthrie in a hospital room. Vanity Fair’s fact-versus-fiction account says they met at a private New Jersey home where Guthrie spent weekends during his illness. The meeting inspired “Song to Woody”; Pete Seeger was not there.

Seeger and the House Un-American Activities Committee
Seeger was questioned by the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1955, refused to cooperate, and was charged with contempt of Congress. He was convicted and sentenced, but the conviction was later overturned. Vanity Fair cautions that the film shifts the timeline and that describing the episode simply as Seeger being arrested for singing oversimplifies what happened.
The Newport performance and the songs around it
Vanity Fair reports that Dylan debuted “The Times They Are a-Changin’” at Carnegie Hall, not Newport. It also notes that Baez recorded Phil Ochs’s “There but for Fortune,” but could not establish that she performed it at Newport as shown in the film. Dave Van Ronk, Odetta, and Paul Stookey are among other folk-scene figures represented or referenced; Phil Ochs does not appear as a character.

How the performances were made
The film’s music consists of newly made performances, not archival recordings or exact copies of the original records. In a Recording Academy interview, director James Mangold said Chalamet sang live on set for the intimate Guthrie scene. The report says tracks were newly generated for the film, with live set recording or studio recording used according to the scene.
Mangold described the approach this way: “We’re not making the Disney Hall Of Presidents.” He continued, “We’re not animatronic figures recreating great moments in rock and roll.” The aim, in other words, was to dramatize people and relationships rather than present a series of exact replicas.

A book behind the film
The screenplay was based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric!: Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties, according to The Guardian. Wald’s book focuses on the Newport, Seeger, and Dylan story; it is a useful source for that episode, not a comprehensive biography of Dylan. The Guardian also relays Wald’s recollection of being told, “Bob doesn’t read about Dylan”—a reported remark, not a direct interview quote from Dylan. Mangold’s account of Dylan’s brief explanation of the film’s arc likewise does not establish Dylan’s approval of every historical detail.
