How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Stream Reconnect After an Internet Outage

OBS automatic reconnect can retry a dropped connection, but YouTube event state and local sources need separate checks. Learn how to test recovery and what to do when it fails.

In OBS Studio, enable Settings > Advanced > Automatic Reconnect, then test a real connection interruption and check both OBS and YouTube Studio. OBS can retry its connection to YouTube, but that alone does not guarantee that YouTube’s live event stays open or that a webcam source recovers. For a stream that must keep running while your home computer or internet is unavailable, a cloud-hosted option such as StreamNeo avoids relying on that local setup.

What automatic reconnect can—and cannot—do

A 24/7 stream depends on three separate things: OBS and its video source must keep running; the connection from your encoder to YouTube’s ingest servers must work; and the YouTube live event must remain active. OBS automatic reconnect addresses the encoder’s output connection. It cannot repair a stopped OBS process, restore a failed camera, fix an unstable internet path, or guarantee that YouTube will preserve an event after a long outage.

YouTube’s published guidance does not specify a universal outage duration after which an event will end, or promise that every interrupted event will resume automatically. Treat reconnect as one layer of recovery—not an unattended-stream guarantee. See YouTube’s live stream settings and its encoder setup guidance.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect

  1. In OBS Studio, open Settings > Advanced.
  2. Find the Automatic Reconnect controls and make sure reconnect is enabled. OBS documents the feature in its overview guide; labels and placement can vary by release or platform.
  3. Set a maximum retry count and starting retry delay that suit the interruptions you expect. OBS’s output reference explains that the delay increases by doubling on successive retries. The retry count is finite, so do not assume OBS will retry forever; the right budget depends on your setup and how long you want it to keep attempting. See the OBS Output API Reference.
  4. Apply the settings, then check the OBS status area during a controlled test to confirm it attempts to reconnect after the connection returns.

Check YouTube’s event and encoder settings

Confirm the destination and stream key

In YouTube Studio, open the relevant live event in the Live Control Room and check that the stream URL and stream key configured in OBS correspond to that event. YouTube describes the key as the credential that lets an encoder send its feed; treat it like a password and do not share or expose it. If you replace or select a different key, update the encoder configuration as well. The setup steps are in YouTube’s encoder instructions.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Understand auto-start and auto-stop

YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings control whether an encoder connection can start or stop a stream. The published settings guidance does not say these controls guarantee that a previously ended event will resume after an outage. Check the Live Control Room after reconnecting; if the intended event is no longer live, follow the event workflow there rather than assuming OBS has restored it. See Manage live stream settings.

Test the full setup before leaving it unattended

  1. Run the intended OBS scene and source with representative audio and motion.
  2. Check that your configured upload bitrate is sustainable on the connection you will use, and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health; see its encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
  3. Briefly interrupt the network connection in a controlled test. Observe whether OBS reports a disconnect and then retries, whether the source continues functioning, and whether the correct event is still live in YouTube Studio.
  4. Restore the connection and confirm the picture, sound, and event state. If OBS reconnects but the event has ended, use the intended Live Control Room workflow to start or create the stream as appropriate.

A short test confirms only what happened in that test; it does not establish a universal recovery window for longer outages. YouTube also states that streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived. That is an archiving rule, not a reconnection guarantee (YouTube encoder guidance).

Troubleshoot failed or unreliable reconnects

Symptom What to check Practical fix
OBS disconnects repeatedly or shows dropped frames OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Check that the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate. Prefer wired networking where practical; inspect the router, modem, and other network hardware. If the connection remains unstable, contact your ISP. See OBS connection troubleshooting.
OBS reconnects, but the YouTube stream is not live Check the event state in the Live Control Room, along with the selected event, stream URL, and stream key. Correct the encoder destination if needed, then use the intended YouTube event workflow if the event has ended. OBS retry by itself does not prove the event remains live.
OBS is connected but the video or audio source is missing The encoder connection and the local source are separate parts of the stream. Check that OBS is running and the camera, capture device, audio input, or scene source is still available. Reconnecting the output connection does not restore a failed source.
Reconnect attempts stop before service returns OBS has a configured maximum retry count and increasing delay, rather than an unlimited retry promise. Review the retry budget and starting delay in Advanced settings. Choose values based on the outages you need to cover, then repeat the controlled test.

For wider network diagnosis, OBS also identifies modem/router connectivity and other network hardware as possible causes; its troubleshooting guide recommends checking the network path and contacting the ISP if local checks do not resolve an unstable connection.

When to use a different recovery approach

Match the remedy to the failure. OBS retry can address a temporary encoder-to-YouTube connection loss while OBS and its source remain available. If the local internet path is the weak point, a compatible cellular failover router may help only where the carrier has usable coverage and the router actually supports automatic failover. If the computer, power, or local connection cannot be relied on, moving playback to a cloud host removes those local dependencies, though any provider’s exact continuity behavior should be checked rather than assumed.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists a cloud-based tool category for continuous streaming of prerecorded videos. That is a different approach from sending a live webcam feed through OBS: hosted prerecorded playback does not make a camera live. StreamNeo is one YouTube-only cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel looping uploaded recordings rather than broadcasting a live webcam, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home internet do not have to stay on; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
