Find the first point in the video path where the picture turns black: check the source, FFmpeg’s local output, then YouTube Live Control Room’s preview. That tells you whether to investigate the capture input, FFmpeg’s mapping and filters, or YouTube ingest and delivery. Don’t change pixel format or filters at random; the right fix depends on where the image disappears and what your FFmpeg command and YouTube warnings show.
Trace where the picture disappears
Check three points in order: the source before FFmpeg, FFmpeg’s output or a local recording of that output, and the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep a local sample or archive if possible. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, routed audio and video sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive when troubleshooting a live stream (YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide).
- The source is already black: FFmpeg cannot encode a picture it never receives. Check that the intended input is selected, the capture device is producing frames, and any required device permission is enabled.
- The source is visible but FFmpeg’s local output is black: Inspect which input video stream the command selects, the output stream mapping, and every filter in the video chain. Check the encoded output’s actual properties before changing a format or filter.
- The local output is healthy but YouTube’s preview is black: Check Live Control Room’s health messages and ingest warnings, then verify the active stream destination and outbound connection.
This sequence narrows the fault without assuming every black screen has the same cause. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also points streamers to encoder output, source feeds, archive integrity, CPU load, and internet connectivity.
Read YouTube’s warning before changing the encode
Open the active stream in Live Control Room and read the exact warning. YouTube’s live-stream error messages explain that an incorrect-format warning can concern the container, video codec, audio codec, or video codec profile. Correct the field named in the warning; a black picture alone does not identify which one is wrong.

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codec options, and recommends CBR. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds; frame rates up to 60 fps are listed. Actual acceptance can depend on the active ingestion configuration, so compare your output with the settings and messages shown for your stream. The incorrect-format article describes H.264/AAC as a correction for that error case; do not treat it as a universal rule for every ingest configuration.
Compare the outgoing video settings
Use FFmpeg’s output properties and the settings for the active YouTube stream to check codec, profile, container, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval. YouTube specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and lists support up to 60 fps in its live encoder settings.

For H.264, YouTube’s published table gives these examples:

These are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264, not guaranteed fixes for black video. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codec-specific values, use the current table in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance rather than extrapolating from these examples.

Check upload capacity and stream destination
Leave bandwidth headroom
Compare the total outgoing stream bitrate with available upload capacity, not just the video bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% room beyond the total stream bitrate. If the connection is saturated or unstable, reduce the output demand or improve the available upload capacity, then check stream health again.
Confirm the active YouTube destination
Check that FFmpeg is sending to the stream URL and stream key for the active broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the stream key as credential and address information used to send the feed (manage live stream settings). Treat the key like a password: redact it from commands, logs, screenshots, and support requests. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.

Preflight with a representative test
Before an important broadcast, test with representative movement and audio. Check that the video appears in Live Control Room and watch its health messages while the test runs. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream” (YouTube Help).
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Black in the source and everywhere downstream: Check the input device or source selection, its current state, permissions, and whether it is producing frames. Establish a visible source before debugging encoding.
- Visible source but black in FFmpeg’s output: Review the command’s video input selection, stream mapping, and filters in order. Compare the output’s actual video properties with the intended settings. Avoid adding a pixel-format conversion or removing filters without evidence that one is responsible.
- Visible in the local output but black in YouTube: Read Live Control Room’s format and health messages, check the active URL and key, and investigate outbound connectivity. If a warning names a codec, profile, container, or audio issue, address that specific field.
- Video appears intermittently or the stream reports delivery trouble: Check encoder errors and CPU load, inspect the local archive, and compare total bitrate with upload capacity. Keep the recommended 20% upload headroom in mind.
What to collect if the cause is still unclear
For a useful diagnosis, collect the FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, FFmpeg version and build output, source type, relevant encoder logs, and the local output’s video properties. Include the exact Live Control Room warning and say whether the source and local output show a picture. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking CPU load, encoder output, local archive integrity, and the upload connection (troubleshoot a YouTube live stream). Without the input type, command, mappings, filters, build, and logs, there is no reliable universal FFmpeg command or single filter change to prescribe.
