Yes, a Chromebook may be able to start a YouTube livestream, but YouTube does not guarantee that any Chromebook can run one unattended around the clock. Starting a stream is different from keeping it stable for 24 hours, saving a complete replay, or qualifying for monetization. Test the exact Chromebook and setup before relying on it. If a complete replay matters, do not depend on one stream lasting more than 12 hours: YouTube says it may not capture streams that exceed that limit.
What a Chromebook can do—and what is not guaranteed
YouTube supports livestreaming from a computer through either a webcam flow or a streaming encoder. Its webcam guidance specifies Chrome 60 or later, which establishes browser compatibility—not certification of every Chromebook for continuous streaming. Your channel must also meet YouTube’s livestream eligibility requirements, including verification and having no livestreaming restrictions that prevent access. See YouTube’s computer livestreaming guidance and webcam streaming instructions.
The cited YouTube and Google documentation does not promise 24/7 performance for any Chromebook model. The result depends on the particular device, ChromeOS version, power and cooling behavior, network, and how the prerecorded video is played into the stream. No model, resolution, or streaming method is specified here, so there is no sound basis for a universal compatibility verdict.
Choose how to get prerecorded video into the stream
YouTube’s webcam flow
The webcam option is a browser-based livestreaming route, not by itself a documented 24/7 prerecorded-video playout system. YouTube’s compatibility statement for Chrome does not establish that a particular Chromebook can continuously play a video and send it as a live broadcast. Confirm that your intended source and workflow are supported before planning a long run.

An encoder workflow
YouTube also supports streaming through an encoder. This can be appropriate when the chosen software and source-playback arrangement can send the prerecorded video as the live input, but the available information does not establish Chromebook compatibility for any particular encoder or provide settings such as bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval. Check the software’s own requirements and YouTube’s current instructions rather than assuming a desktop encoder setup will work on every Chromebook.
Plan around the 12-hour replay limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single continuous 24-hour broadcast should therefore not be treated as a reliable way to create a complete replay. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- If a YouTube replay is important, use shorter sessions under 12 hours rather than one uninterrupted 24-hour session.
- If you need a backup, keep a separate local recording where the chosen workflow and device support it; YouTube recommends keeping a local archive.
- Check that the local file is actually being created and growing during a test. Do not assume the live broadcast itself guarantees a usable local recording.
Keep the Chromebook awake, but account for device type
For unattended operation, power and sleep behavior matter as much as the browser. Google documents settings for managed, enrolled ChromeOS kiosk devices: set the idle action to “Do nothing,” set screen-dim and screen-off timeouts to zero, and allow the kiosk app to manage power. Those controls are not a general guarantee that the same options are available on an unmanaged consumer Chromebook. See Google’s ChromeOS device policy instructions.
For a consumer device, check its available power settings and test the exact arrangement, including what happens with the lid open and the display idle. The cited documentation does not verify lid-closed behavior for consumer Chromebooks; do not plan around it without testing.

Label children’s content accurately
YouTube requires creators to set the audience for their content, including livestreams. If the stream is made for kids, mark it accordingly using YouTube’s audience setting; do not choose a setting merely to preserve features. YouTube says made-for-kids content loses features including live chat, comments, notifications, and personalized advertising. Contextual ads may still appear. See YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.
Do not assume a continuous loop will earn money
Technical ability to broadcast does not establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 says repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its inauthentic-content policy and is ineligible for monetization. YouTube describes the update as a clarification of its existing policy, not a newly introduced rule. A repeated loop is therefore not automatically monetizable; assess the originality and rights for the actual material against YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Test the whole setup before relying on it
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring a livestream. Run the intended configuration long enough to expose sleep, network, playback, and capture failures before using it for a scheduled all-day broadcast. During the test, check the preview, confirm the stream is visible on the channel or watch page and on mobile, monitor audio and video, and—if using an encoder—verify any failover behavior and that the archive file grows as expected. These checks follow YouTube’s computer livestreaming tips; they are not a substitute for a Chromebook-specific reliability guarantee.

- The stream will not start: confirm livestream access is enabled for the channel, check for restrictions, and verify the selected browser or encoder workflow against YouTube’s current setup instructions.
- The broadcast stops when unattended: inspect sleep and power settings, confirm power remains connected, and test whether the chosen playback and streaming workflow continues when the display is idle. Managed kiosk power policies apply only to enrolled kiosk devices.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions and a separate local recording if preservation matters.
- Live chat or personalized ads are unavailable: these are among the features YouTube disables for made-for-kids content; check the audience setting for accuracy rather than changing it to restore features.
- Expected monetization does not materialize: continuous operation is not a monetization qualification. Review whether repetitive or mass-produced programming meets YouTube’s inauthentic-content policy and whether you have the necessary rights.
