First, confirm there is an archive to chapter
Chapter markers navigate a saved video; they do not create a replay of a livestream that YouTube did not capture. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete archive. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
If the broadcast was longer than 12 hours, check YouTube Studio for the resulting video and inspect its duration. If no usable archive exists, chapter markers cannot repair that gap; use the local recording if you have one. For future broadcasts, plan how to retain a recording rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone.
Add manual chapter markers in YouTube Studio
- Open the archived video. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, then choose the archived livestream you want to edit. Check the video’s duration and timeline before writing timestamps.
- Review the recording from start to finish. Note the actual start time of each meaningful segment. For a children’s stream, labels might identify a song, story, activity, or other section a parent or viewer may want to revisit. Use the archive’s real boundaries; do not estimate timestamps from a planned schedule.
- Prepare the timestamp list. Put each timestamp and its title on a separate line in the video description. The first timestamp must be
00:00; include at least three timestamps, in ascending order; and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. These are YouTube’s stated requirements. YouTube Help: Video chapters. - Save the description. After adding the list, save the video’s changes in Studio.
- Check the replay. Open the video and verify the chapter boundaries in the player. Test several markers to make sure they land on the intended content, then correct any mistyped or inaccurate timestamps in Studio.

Choose meaningful transitions and concise titles rather than adding markers at arbitrary intervals. YouTube Help: Video chapters.

Children’s streams: audience settings and description limits
Set the video’s audience accurately, including for a livestream and its archived version. YouTube documents a workflow for updating the audience on archived livestreams. Its list of feature restrictions for Made for Kids content does not include chapters, but that does not expressly guarantee that chapter controls or chapter display will be available for every Made for Kids archive. Do not change an audience designation to try to obtain a feature. See YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience.
A video description can contain up to 5,000 characters, so leave room for the chapter list alongside the information viewers need. If you add a correction section, YouTube says to place it after any video chapters. See YouTube Help: Add video chapters, corrections, and more.

Why a 24-hour livestream replay may be missing or incomplete
- No replay appears: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Check Studio and your local recording rather than expecting chapter timestamps to restore an uncaptured stream. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
- The archive is shorter than the broadcast: Compare its duration and timeline with your recording or backup. Chapter only the footage that is actually present.
- Markers do not appear or do not navigate correctly: Recheck the formatting and order, confirm the first entry is
00:00, include at least three timestamps, and ensure each chapter lasts 10 seconds or more. Save the description and test the replay again. - The Made for Kids archive has no visible chapter controls: Keep the audience setting accurate. YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee chapter controls or display for every such archive.
