Best Docker Images for Looping Videos to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best overall for keeping a YouTube video stream running without maintaining a Docker host: StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud, with any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day. For a self-hosted Docker setup that loops a folder of videos, the closest documented match is simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder. For a custom FFmpeg pipeline, linuxserver/ffmpeg is the more flexible starting point—but it is not a ready-made looping app.

Best options at a glance

Option Best for What is documented Main trade-off
1. StreamNeo Keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube without running your own Docker host Upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the cloud stream. It loops uploaded videos, supports quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is a cloud service for uploaded videos, not a Docker image or a camera-to-live service. It streams to YouTube only.
2. simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder Sequential playback and indefinite looping from a mounted folder The project README documents MP4 and MKV input, a /videos mount, a YouTube stream key, and LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true. Its documented approach builds the image from source. The documentation does not establish a prebuilt registry image, current maintenance, exact encoding settings, or compatibility with every current YouTube ingestion setting.
3. linuxserver/ffmpeg Experienced Docker and FFmpeg users building a custom pipeline LinuxServer documents a general, ephemeral FFmpeg command-line image, x86-64 and arm64 support, and hardware-acceleration options. It is not a turnkey folder-looping YouTube app. You need to construct and maintain the FFmpeg command yourself.

This is a feature-based shortlist, not a reliability or performance ranking of tested containers. No long-duration stream or comparative benchmark is established by the project documentation described here.

Choosing a self-hosted Docker image

Choose the folder-looping project for a documented starting point

If your source is a directory of recordings and you want them played sequentially and repeated, simeononsecurity/docker-ffmpeg-mp4-folder is the closest fit. Its README describes MP4 and MKV files, mounting the video directory at /videos, passing a YouTube stream key, and enabling indefinite looping with LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true. Treat those as documented project settings to verify against the current repository before deploying; they are not proof that a current build works with your account, stream key, or chosen YouTube protocol.

Choose LinuxServer FFmpeg when you need to write the pipeline

linuxserver/ffmpeg provides a general FFmpeg command-line environment rather than a ready-made playlist streamer. It makes sense when you already understand Docker and FFmpeg and need to control input handling, encoding, or hardware acceleration yourself. LinuxServer documents x86-64 and arm64 support, but that alone does not establish the performance of a particular host, codec, resolution, or frame rate.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check these differences before committing

  • Input and looping: Does the project accept one file or a directory, and is sequential or indefinite looping actually documented?
  • Build and maintenance: Is the image built from source or published for pulling, and is the project maintained? The reviewed documentation does not establish current maintenance for the folder-looping project.
  • Encoding and hardware: Will your workflow copy an existing encode or re-encode it? What codec, resolution, frame rate, and hardware acceleration does it require? Do not infer host requirements from architecture support alone.
  • Secrets and recovery: How does the project receive the stream key, restart after a failure, and expose health status? Verify the actual Dockerfile and entrypoint rather than assuming these safeguards exist.
  • YouTube ingest: Does the FFmpeg output use the protocol and settings selected in YouTube Live Control Room?

Set up a folder-looping container safely

The documented project flow is to build the image from its source, mount your video directory, provide the YouTube stream key, and enable the indefinite-loop setting. The README-level information available here does not establish a complete, current command line or Compose file, so use the repository’s current Dockerfile, entrypoint, and README for exact syntax rather than copying an unverified template.

  1. Review the project first. Inspect its current Dockerfile and entrypoint to confirm how it finds files, orders playback, handles errors, and sends video to YouTube. Confirm that its current output matches your intended ingest protocol.
  2. Prepare a dedicated video directory. Put only the intended MP4 or MKV recordings in the host directory you plan to mount at /videos. Confirm the container can read the files and that they play correctly with the project’s expected FFmpeg workflow.
  3. Build from source as documented. The documented flow is a source build; the evidence here does not establish a prebuilt registry image to pull. Follow the repository’s current build instructions and record the image version or commit you use so you can reproduce it.
  4. Supply the stream key carefully. The README shows the key passed as an environment variable. Avoid putting it in a public Compose file, a shared repository, logs, or a shell command likely to remain in history. Use your deployment environment’s protected secret mechanism where available, and restrict access to the host and deployment configuration.
  5. Enable looping and start a test stream. Set LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true as documented, then validate playback in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for a scheduled or continuous broadcast.
  6. Observe a representative test. Include ordinary motion and audio from your actual recordings. Check YouTube’s stream health and the container’s logs, and verify the transition from one file to the next and the return to the beginning of the sequence.

Match the container output to YouTube Live

YouTube recommends RTMPS for normal live ingestion. Do not assume that a project described as supporting YouTube automatically supports every current ingest protocol or setting: inspect its FFmpeg output and compare it with the ingest option selected in Live Control Room. Test the exact configuration before depending on it.

If you deliberately use YouTube HLS

YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies a separate, segment-based workflow. It calls for H.264 or HEVC video; AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio; TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds; a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; and HTTPS POST/PUT without byte ranges. Encryption is allowed only through HTTPS. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These requirements are not a claim that either Docker project configures HLS for you; confirm its output and the current Live Control Room settings.

Audio settings to check

YouTube’s published configuration guidance includes 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 audio sampling, and 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio bitrate. These are configuration recommendations, not benchmark results. Check the guidance for the protocol and setup you actually use, and listen to a test for clipping, silence, or sync problems.

Plan for reliability, compute, and content rights

Protect the stream key

A stream key lets the configured encoder send a broadcast to your channel. The folder-looping README’s environment-variable approach makes secret handling an operator responsibility: keep the key out of public configuration, logs, and shell history, and replace it if you believe it has been exposed.

Size the host from the real workload

Compute needs depend on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether FFmpeg re-encodes the source. The LinuxServer image documents hardware-acceleration options, but the available documentation does not establish a minimum host specification or benchmark a particular mini PC. Test on the hardware you intend to use, especially if encoding rather than passing through prepared media.

Test recovery instead of assuming it

Project documentation is not proof of long-running reliability, automatic restart behavior, or recovery after YouTube disconnects. Test file transitions, a container restart, and the stream’s behavior after a controlled interruption. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during operation, as YouTube recommends, and make sure someone can respond if the broadcast stops.

Use media you have the right to stream

Only use recordings for which you have the necessary streaming rights. A Docker image or a successful test broadcast does not establish permission to use a film, soundtrack, documentary, or other copyrighted material.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the key is current, the container can reach the ingest endpoint, and the FFmpeg output protocol matches Live Control Room. Check the container’s error output without exposing the key.
  • The container starts but no files play: Check the host-to-container mount and read permissions, confirm media is in the mounted directory, and verify that the files are MP4 or MKV as expected by the project.
  • The playlist stops after one pass: Confirm that LOOP_INDEFINITELY=true is set in the environment the container actually receives, then inspect the current entrypoint for its loop behavior.
  • Playback stutters or stream health degrades: Check host CPU/GPU load, source codec and frame rate, network stability, and whether the workflow is re-encoding. Hardware acceleration may help only when correctly supported and configured; the image documentation is not a performance guarantee.
  • The stream works in one protocol but not another: Recheck the selected YouTube ingest route and the container’s output settings. HLS requires its specific segment, playlist, and HTTPS behavior; RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended normal route.
  • The broadcast stops after a disconnect: Inspect container and YouTube status, then determine whether the image, Docker host, or stream endpoint needs a restart. Do not assume automatic recovery unless you have verified it in your own test.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the loop without maintaining a Docker host, StreamNeo’s flow is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera.
