To stream continuously from a Jetson Nano, connect a camera or other video source to a GStreamer pipeline, encode the video on the Nano, and send it to a YouTube Live event using the event’s server URL and private stream key. The exact capture and encoder elements depend on the Jetson Linux (L4T) release installed on your board, so identify that image and validate the pipeline on the Nano rather than relying on a command written for a different release.
How the Jetson Nano connects to YouTube Live
The signal path is: camera or other video source → capture and format handling on the Nano → video encoder → network output to YouTube Live. If the program needs live sound, the pipeline also needs an audio source and a compatible audio path. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses the event’s server URL and stream key; YouTube Help instructs creators to enter those details in the encoder (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
“Continuous” requires more than a successful first connection. The source, encoder, power supply, network, and process must all keep working, and you need a recovery plan for a dropped connection or stopped process. NVIDIA documents Jetson multimedia components, but the sources do not provide a tested end-to-end continuous-stream command or an automatic-restart recipe for a particular Nano image.
1. Identify the Nano and its installed software
Before choosing GStreamer elements, identify the board and its installed Jetson Linux (L4T) release. Use the NVIDIA multimedia guide for that release and confirm which plugins are actually installed. NVIDIA’s guide covers Jetson Nano and GStreamer 1.0; in its release context it describes GStreamer 1.14. It also notes that the legacy gst-omx plugin was deprecated beginning with Jetson Linux release 32.1 in favor of gst-v4l2. Do not assume an older tutorial’s element names apply to your image.

For reference, NVIDIA documents the nvv4l2h264enc H.264 encoder element for Jetson Nano and lists Nano support for VP8 through the V4L2 plugin. Consult the Jetson Linux multimedia guide for release-specific details, camera paths, and available multimedia elements. Treat its documentation as a component reference, not proof that a particular complete YouTube pipeline will work unchanged.
2. Choose and verify the video source
For a camera stream, confirm that the exact camera and connection path are supported by your installed image. NVIDIA documents separate CSI and USB camera paths, but that does not establish compatibility for every camera model. For an existing video generator or another source, adapt the pipeline’s input side to that source.

YouTube lists webcams and microphones among common encoder equipment, while NVIDIA’s guide documents Jetson camera support. Neither source validates every individual peripheral model; check the model and capture path on the actual board (YouTube encoder setup; NVIDIA multimedia guide).
3. Build and test the pipeline on the board
Construct the GStreamer pipeline from elements available in your installed image. It needs a working input, any required format conversion and caps, an encoder, audio handling if applicable, and a network output that can reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint. NVIDIA’s documentation establishes relevant Jetson components, including nvv4l2h264enc; it does not establish a tested, one-size-fits-all pipeline command for continuous YouTube streaming. For that reason, there is no safe universal command to copy here.

These are platform capability figures published by NVIDIA in 2019, not sustained end-to-end YouTube streaming results. They do not promise that a specific input, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, software release, power setup, cooling arrangement, and network will run continuously. The cited sources establish no Nano-specific stream uptime, workload power consumption, or sustained YouTube performance benchmark (NVIDIA, “Hello AI World: Meet Jetson Nano”).

- Create or open the live event in YouTube Live Control Room. Check that the event is configured and ready to receive the encoder feed before relying on the stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube’s encoder instructions use these exact connection fields.
- Enter both values in the encoder’s network output configuration. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the event.
- Start the pipeline and check the received-stream status in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and, if used, audio before treating the setup as ready.
For a secure ingestion connection, Google documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL. The connection must use the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path, and port 443 over SSL. Check that the GStreamer sink or encoder you chose supports that connection form; a valid URL alone does not make an incompatible sink work (Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide).

5. Prepare for long-running operation and recovery
Do an extended test with the actual stream settings and hardware before leaving the Nano unattended. Observe CPU and memory load, temperature, network stability, audio/video synchronization, and YouTube’s received-stream status. Also test what happens after a network disconnect and after the streaming process is stopped and restarted.
Do not assume the stream will resume automatically. The cited NVIDIA and YouTube documentation does not specify a Nano-specific restart service, reconnection policy, or certified continuous-running duration. Configure and test whatever process supervision and reconnection behavior your implementation uses, including whether YouTube accepts the renewed connection and whether the video source recovers.
Power and camera-performance checks
NVIDIA’s archived Jetson Linux R32.7.6 release notes warn that the Nano may shut down if adapter power capacity is exceeded and recommend a validated adapter with adequate capacity. The same release notes say camera-capture pipelines involving scaling or color conversion may be affected in performance and recommend nvarguscamerasrc maxperf=1 for better performance. These are release-specific notes, so check the documentation for your installed image and hardware before applying them (Jetson Linux R32.7.6 release notes).
Troubleshooting a Nano-to-YouTube stream
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The source or encoder element is missing | Check the installed Jetson Linux release and available GStreamer plugins. Older tutorials may use deprecated gst-omx elements; NVIDIA notes the transition toward gst-v4l2 beginning with release 32.1. |
| The camera does not produce video | Verify that the specific camera, driver, and CSI or USB capture path are supported by the installed image, then test the source separately from the rest of the pipeline. |
| The pipeline runs but YouTube receives no feed | Recheck the event’s server URL and stream key, the network output configuration, the selected endpoint and application path, and whether the chosen sink supports the connection protocol. Check the event’s received-stream status in Live Control Room. |
| The connection fails when using RTMPS | Verify the rtmps protocol, valid YouTube endpoint and application path, SSL, and port 443; confirm the output component supports this connection form. |
| The Nano shuts down or becomes unstable under load | Check that the adapter has adequate validated capacity. Monitor temperature and system load during an extended test; do not infer stability from a short successful run. |
| Camera capture slows when conversion or scaling is used | Check the notes for the installed release. NVIDIA’s archived R32.7.6 notes specifically recommend nvarguscamerasrc maxperf=1 for better performance in the affected camera-pipeline context. |
| The stream stops after a disconnect or process failure | Test the network recovery and process restart behavior of your implementation. The cited sources do not provide a Nano-specific automatic-restart recipe, so verify recovery before relying on unattended operation. |
