You can run OBS on a rented Windows VPS and send a continuous stream to YouTube without a managed streaming service. The setup is: create or select a broadcast in YouTube Studio, connect OBS with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then test the stream and the VPS’s recovery behavior. The VPS must sustain your chosen encoding workload and outbound traffic; there is no single VPS size or recovery setup that fits every provider and stream.
What the setup does—and what “24/7” means
OBS encodes and sends your programme from the Windows VPS to YouTube. YouTube provides the connection details in Live Control Room: a server URL and a stream key. The VPS replaces a computer at home as the machine that runs OBS, but it does not remove the need to plan for encoding capacity, network transfer, restarts, and interruptions.
A 24/7 stream means keeping programming available continuously; it does not mean YouTube will preserve one unbroken archive forever. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its encoder guidance does not make that promise for streams longer than 12 hours, so plan and verify archive behavior separately if keeping recordings matters. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Before you rent or configure the VPS
Check that the channel can go live
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. YouTube’s encoder workflow notes that first-time users create a stream and that previous stream settings may load again. Resolve any channel eligibility or live-streaming restrictions shown in Studio before building the rest of the setup.

Choose a VPS for sustained work, not a guessed minimum
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements. Those are baseline requirements, not a recommended VPS specification: OBS cautions that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording a particular workload. Test the actual resolution, frame rate, scene, and encoder you intend to run. OBS system requirements
- Encoding capacity: Confirm that the virtual machine can encode continuously at your target settings. A static image, a documentary with frequent motion, and a complex OBS scene do not impose identical workloads.
- Hardware encoding: Do not assume a virtual machine exposes a supported GPU or encoder. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync, subject to hardware and driver compatibility. Check what the provider actually exposes and whether the relevant drivers work in the VPS. OBS hardware encoding
- Network and operations: Check sustained outbound bandwidth, transfer limits, remote access, restart controls, and how the provider handles maintenance and reboots. The VPS must send the stream continuously, not just pass a short speed test.
- Recovery: Establish how OBS will be started again after a process failure, Windows restart, VPS reboot, or network interruption. Recovery mechanisms depend on the provider and your configuration; test them rather than assuming the stream will resume by itself.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and OBS connection
- Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the encoder workflow to create a stream or use an existing one. Note the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast.
- Install and open OBS on the Windows VPS. Connect to the VPS using the remote-access method provided by your host. Confirm OBS opens and that the chosen video source, media, and audio are available on that machine. A file on your home computer is not automatically available inside the VPS; transfer or otherwise make programme media accessible there.
- Enter YouTube’s connection details. In OBS, choose YouTube if it is available as a service, or configure the server URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it in screenshots, chat, or public configuration files.
- Set encoder options against YouTube’s current guidance. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings appropriate to your content and the VPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance lists CBR, up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. - Start the encoder and verify the broadcast. Start Streaming in OBS, then check the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and use the Live Control Room’s Go live action as described in YouTube’s workflow. Confirm the public viewing page is showing the intended programme before leaving the stream unattended.
Choose settings and test the real workload
Use YouTube’s published recommendations as a starting point, then confirm the VPS can sustain them. For example, YouTube’s table lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; 1080p60 is listed at 6–17 Mbps. Those examples do not apply unchanged to AV1 or H.265, which have different recommendations. Check the linked table for the codec and frame rate you actually use.

- Resolution and frame rate: Match the source and the content’s needs. Higher resolution and frame rate require a compatible encoding workload and greater network capacity.
- Bitrate: Select a value within YouTube’s range for the chosen codec and format, and ensure the VPS can sustain it. A bitrate that looks suitable in OBS is not useful if the VPS or provider connection cannot maintain it.
- Keyframes and rate control: Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube’s recommended starting point; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and verify audio in the YouTube preview, including during quieter passages.
Test with representative motion and audio, not only a static screen. Watch OBS’s statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. Leave the test running long enough to reveal sustained encoding or network problems before relying on the configuration for a continuous broadcast.
Plan transfer costs and continuity
At a steady video bitrate of 1 Mbps, the video data alone is about 10.8 GB per 24 hours using decimal gigabytes: 1 megabit per second × 86,400 seconds ÷ 8. Audio and protocol overhead add to the total. Multiply that estimate by your chosen bitrate and expected streaming days, then compare it with the VPS plan’s outbound-transfer allowance and charges. Provider prices and bandwidth terms vary, and no specific provider plan or cost can be assumed here.

Before treating the stream as unattended, test the events that can interrupt it: close OBS, restart Windows, reboot the VPS, and simulate or observe a network interruption where practical. Verify whether OBS restarts, whether YouTube accepts the reconnection, and what action is required if either does not. Schedule Windows updates and planned maintenance deliberately, and keep remote access details available for recovery. The exact restart and recovery procedure is specific to the host and system configuration.
Copyright, programming, and YouTube rules
A technically healthy stream can still run into rights or policy problems. Use video, music, and other material only when you have the rights or permission needed for the intended live use. A license to watch, download, or use a track in another context does not necessarily grant live-streaming rights. Check the status of any claims or restrictions in YouTube Studio.

Continuous availability does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube monetization or originality requirements. Make sure your programming and channel comply with YouTube’s current policies, and do not assume that looping or rebroadcasting material is exempt from copyright checks or reused-content review.

- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS is using the server URL and stream key for the selected broadcast, that the key has not been mistyped or replaced, and that the VPS can reach YouTube over the network. Keep the key confidential; replace it in YouTube if it may have been exposed.
- OBS reports encoding overload or the picture stutters: Test the target settings on the actual VPS. Lower resolution or frame rate, simplify the OBS scene, or use a supported hardware encoder only if the VPS exposes compatible hardware and drivers.
- YouTube reports an unstable or unhealthy stream: Compare the configured codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format with YouTube’s current recommendations. Check for sustained outbound capacity and provider transfer constraints, then repeat a representative test.
- The stream stops after a restart or disconnection: Determine whether Windows, the VPS, OBS, or the connection failed. Use the provider’s restart and remote-access controls, then verify that OBS reconnects and that Live Control Room reports a healthy preview. Do not assume automatic recovery without a successful test.
- The broadcast is live but no expected archive appears: Check the stream duration and current YouTube behavior. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule covers streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for longer sessions.
