You can run a 24/7 Indian music stream from an Ubuntu server by sending an authorized audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live with an encoder such as FFmpeg. First confirm that your channel is eligible for live streaming and that you have the rights—and any required Content ID allowlisting—for every track. Then configure a YouTube event, choose output settings your server and sustained upload connection can handle, test the feed, and set up monitoring. A system service can restart an encoder after some failures, but it cannot guarantee that the server, network, or YouTube event stays online.

What you need before setting up the stream

The setup has four parts: a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, a music source you are authorized to broadcast, an Ubuntu host with enough sustained upload capacity, and an encoder configured with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.

  • YouTube access: YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so check access well before your planned launch. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the prerequisites.
  • Authorized content: Confirm the rights for the intended tracks, territories, and livestream use, and ask rights holders whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting.
  • Always-on host: Use either a local Ubuntu server or an appropriately configured VPS. A local machine depends on your own power, network, and upstream connection; a VPS removes those particular home dependencies but still depends on its host and network. Compare actual sustained upload capacity, control needs, and ongoing cost before choosing; no single provider or plan is established as suitable for every stream.
  • Encoder and output plan: Select resolution, frame rate, codecs, and bitrate only after checking the server’s encoding capability and the real sustained upstream connection.

Can you stream Indian songs on YouTube Live?

Only if you have the necessary rights for the livestream and relevant territories. A song being Indian music, publicly available, purchased, attributed, or streamed without monetization does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it live.

YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider represents and warrants that it has the necessary rights worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. The terms also assign applicable regulatory and licensing responsibility to the provider. Requirements can depend on the catalog, rights holders, territory, and use; confirm the applicable permissions directly with the rights holders or qualified counsel rather than assuming one rule covers all Indian music.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder image, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated if the material continues; a strike can also terminate it. Even with a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, or YouTube may interrupt the stream. Check YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and obtain allowlisting instructions before going live. YouTube’s livestream terms set out the provider’s rights and licensing responsibilities.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Confirm that the channel has live access before relying on the event for a continuous broadcast.
  2. Get the current stream URL and stream key from that event. Do not rely on an old tutorial’s ingest address or key: use the values shown in your own Live Control Room.
  3. Store the key as a credential. Treat it like a password. Keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, published examples, and public logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
  4. Configure the encoder to use RTMPS when supported. RTMPS is the encrypted extension of RTMP recommended by YouTube. The encoder sends the feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint; the key identifies and authorizes the incoming feed.
  5. Start with a controlled test. Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled event, then inspect the preview and stream-health indicators in Live Control Room before changing the event to its intended visibility or relying on it as a continuous stream.

Choose encoder settings that fit the Ubuntu host

YouTube’s published settings list H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, plus AAC or MP3 audio. The chosen encoder build must support the format you select, and the host must be able to encode it at the intended resolution and frame rate without falling behind. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for viewer playback, but that does not guarantee a particular server can encode or deliver a feed successfully.

Setting Practical choice or platform guidance
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are listed by YouTube; choose one supported by your encoder build and host.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 are listed by YouTube.
Rate control Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
Keyframe interval YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
Stereo audio YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate.
Video bitrate Choose the row in YouTube’s published table that matches your intended resolution and frame rate; confirm the host and uplink can sustain it.

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a performance guarantee for an Ubuntu server. See the current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance before choosing values. The exact encoder command depends on the source, desired output, and installed FFmpeg build. Verify the syntax and behavior against that build; do not copy an untested looping command into a production service.

Calculate upstream headroom before going live

The combined outgoing bitrate must fit within the connection’s available upload capacity—not its advertised download rate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. If sending primary and backup streams, its guidance says to account for the primary bitrate, backup bitrate, and an additional 20%. The available upload capacity can be shared or lower than download capacity, and a connection disruption can break the stream.

Measure sustained upstream performance under the intended workload and leave the recommended margin; do not choose a server plan based only on a short speed test or a provider’s headline download figure. YouTube’s recommendations are in its streaming tips.

Prepare the source and run a controlled test

  1. Prepare the authorized program. Organize the audio and any visual material into a source your chosen encoder can read. Confirm that playback reaches the end or transitions as intended, and that audio and video remain synchronized.
  2. Test locally first. Play the prepared source on the Ubuntu host and check for decoding errors, silent sections, unintended gaps, and synchronization problems. A source that plays correctly once is not automatically configured to loop indefinitely.
  3. Configure the encoder. Use the current event’s URL and key, the selected YouTube-compatible codecs and settings, and a source/looping method verified for your installed encoder build. Keep credentials out of logs and process examples that others can access.
  4. Send a controlled test to YouTube. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check visibility, audio, video, and the stream-health indicators. Test with audio and movement similar to what the planned stream will contain.
  5. Observe it for long enough to expose likely faults. Check that playback continues across source transitions and that the server’s encoder and network remain stable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; passing a brief preview does not establish 24/7 reliability.
  6. Proceed only after the rights and technical checks pass. Confirm the event’s intended visibility, the source’s licensing and any allowlisting, and a way to monitor and recover problems after launch.

Use systemd for process recovery, not as an uptime guarantee

On Ubuntu, systemd can manage an encoder process as a service and restart it after eligible failures. The Ubuntu Jammy systemd.service documentation recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services and describes limits on repeated restarts. This reference is specifically for Jammy; check the documentation for your actual Ubuntu release and verify the unit against your installed encoder before deploying it.

A restart policy addresses only some encoder-process failures. It cannot repair a host outage, restore lost connectivity, fix an invalid stream key, undo a copyright interruption, or necessarily revive a YouTube event that has stopped. Repeated failures can also encounter systemd restart rate limits. Use service logs and independent monitoring, and decide in advance who will investigate alerts and how the event will be recovered. The Ubuntu Jammy systemd.service manual documents the relevant service behavior.

Troubleshoot the failures most likely to stop a continuous stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube does not show the incoming feed Live access is not enabled, the event is not ready, or the encoder is using the wrong URL or key. Confirm channel eligibility and enablement; use the current event’s URL and key from Live Control Room, then check the encoder’s connection logs.
The feed connects but has poor or unstable health The outgoing bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, headroom is insufficient, or the connection is disrupted. Check measured sustained upstream capacity and encoder bitrate; reduce the selected output load if needed and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
The host cannot encode smoothly The selected codec, resolution, or frame rate exceeds the available CPU/GPU or encoder-build capability. Inspect encoder errors and host load; test a lower output setting or a codec supported by the host, then repeat the controlled test.
Audio or video is missing, silent, or out of sync The source, track mapping, decoder, or encoding settings do not match the prepared media. Test the source locally, check encoder diagnostics and audio/video selection, and repeat the YouTube preview with representative material.
The stream shows a placeholder or is interrupted YouTube may have detected third-party content, a rights holder may not have allowlisted the channel, or a strike may have occurred. Review Live Control Room notices and YouTube’s copyright guidance; resolve permissions and allowlisting with the rights holder before resuming.
systemd restarts repeatedly, but the stream stays down The encoder may be failing continuously, hitting restart limits, or the fault may be outside the process—such as a host/network outage or stopped YouTube event. Read service logs, check restart-limit behavior and host/network state, then verify the event and key in Live Control Room. Do not assume a process restart recreated the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want an always-on YouTube stream without keeping an Ubuntu machine at home, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud.
