AzuraCast can automate a continuous music-radio station, but its documented AutoDJ setup is not, by itself, a complete way to send that station to YouTube Live. To run a 24/7 Indian music YouTube channel, first clear the music rights for the planned broadcast, confirm that the channel can livestream, configure AzuraCast playlists, and separately build and test a YouTube-compatible audio-and-video relay. The AzuraCast and YouTube documentation reviewed for this guide does not establish a complete relay recipe, so do not assume a mount-point URL alone is enough.
What you need to settle before setting up AzuraCast
There are two separate jobs: AzuraCast automates the radio station, while a distribution and encoding setup must carry the station to a YouTube live event. Music rights and YouTube livestream eligibility are prerequisites to both—not problems to solve after the channel is on air.
- Rights: establish that you can use each composition and sound recording in a worldwide YouTube livestream, and secure any other permissions that apply to your catalogue and use.
- Channel access: check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and any restrictions on the channel.
- Hosting and maintenance: choose a VPS, dedicated server, or other computer you can maintain, secure, back up, and monitor. AzuraCast documents VPS installation, but the materials reviewed do not establish server-sizing requirements or hosting costs.
- Relay design: plan how station audio will be combined with a video signal and sent to YouTube, including what happens after a connection drops. The AzuraCast documentation reviewed does not provide an end-to-end YouTube relay configuration.
What AzuraCast does—and what it does not do for YouTube
AzuraCast is free, server-based radio software. Its AutoDJ uses media assigned to playlists to create a continuous station broadcast. The AzuraCast “Media Management” documentation describes broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; that is a capability, not a guarantee that a particular server will remain available without interruption.
AzuraCast’s AutoDJ and Liquidsoap backend combine scheduled media and, if configured, live DJ input into a station output. The software transcodes that output into station formats. Streamer accounts can connect to Liquidsoap using compatible Icecast or Shoutcast broadcast software; AzuraCast’s “Streaming Software” guide recommends Icecast mode for Mixxx. These are radio-station functions. They do not, on their own, prove that YouTube can ingest a given mount point or that the station has been composed into a valid video livestream.

Mount points can provide the same station broadcast in different formats and bitrates for listeners. A mount point is not itself a YouTube relay, and the documentation cited here does not establish that a particular mount-point URL can be entered as a YouTube stream source.
Set up the AzuraCast station and AutoDJ
- Install AzuraCast on a machine you control. Use the current AzuraCast installation documentation for the chosen environment, such as a VPS. Installation details can change, so follow the current instructions for that environment rather than relying on an old command or screenshot. Plan for server security, backups, and monitoring as part of operating the station.
- Upload and organize your cleared audio. Use AzuraCast’s media management tools to place the tracks in the station library. Uploading a file alone does not put it into AutoDJ rotation.
- Assign the media to playlists. The AutoDJ plays media assigned to playlists. Create and configure the playlists you intend to use, then check that the tracks are actually assigned. Files in the media directory that are not assigned to a playlist will not be played automatically.
- Check the station output. Confirm that the station is playing the expected playlist material and that the output is available in the intended station format. If you create multiple mount points, treat them as listener-distribution outputs; do not assume one is a YouTube-ready video stream.
- Configure live DJ input only if you need it. AzuraCast supports streamer accounts that connect to Liquidsoap using compatible Icecast or Shoutcast broadcast software. For Mixxx, the AzuraCast guide recommends Icecast mode. If AzuraCast is behind a reverse proxy, verify that the broadcaster ports are reachable: AzuraCast warns that some proxy services block direct broadcaster connections.
- Keep the YouTube relay as a separate implementation. You need a setup that receives the station audio, supplies a video signal, and sends the resulting livestream to YouTube. Decide how any still image, visualizer, or now-playing display will be produced, and test connection recovery and monitoring. The documentation cited here does not specify a compatible encoder, video settings, exact relay commands, or a reconnect configuration; verify those details for the software and YouTube ingest settings you actually choose before relying on it.
Check YouTube livestream eligibility and operating limits
YouTube lists encoder streaming as a way to livestream. Its “Get started with live streaming” help page says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days. Check the channel’s current status and YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a launch; eligibility and platform policies can change.

The same YouTube Help page states limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are platform limits as stated on that page, not estimates of what a server can handle. The page reviewed does not show a publication year.
Clear music rights before you broadcast
YouTube’s Livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” The terms place responsibility for the rights to live content on the creator.

For a music channel, clearance can involve both the composition and the sound recording, along with territory, livestream, archive, and other permissions relevant to your use. The permissions needed depend on the actual catalogue, rights chain, territories, and business circumstances. The information available for this guide does not establish which Indian licences a particular operator needs; get advice specific to the music and planned use rather than treating this as a universal legal checklist.
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued use can interrupt or terminate a stream. YouTube also says that licensed material may be interrupted when the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Keep records of permissions and, where relevant, coordinate allowlisting with the rights holder before going live. A licence alone does not guarantee that Content ID will leave the livestream uninterrupted.

- Buying a track or having a personal streaming subscription does not, by itself, establish permission to broadcast it publicly on YouTube.
- A “free” or “royalty-free” label does not guarantee that a track is cleared for this use or prevent Content ID from flagging it.
- YouTube describes its Audio Library as a copyright-safe source, but check the specific track’s terms against your planned use.
- YouTube says Creator Music licensed and revenue-sharing tracks may be used in long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts. The page reviewed reports availability to US creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion beyond the US pending. These terms and availability are volatile; recheck them directly before relying on them.
Plan for failure and test the whole chain
AzuraCast’s continuous AutoDJ capability does not guarantee uninterrupted availability of your server, internet connection, relay, or YouTube stream. Before announcing a 24/7 schedule, run a supervised end-to-end test with cleared material. Confirm that the intended playlist reaches the relay, the relay produces a video livestream, YouTube receives it, and the channel displays the expected output. Also test what happens when the relay or its connection is interrupted. The sources cited here do not specify a particular reconnect method or promise automatic recovery for a self-built relay.
Common problems and where to look
- AutoDJ is silent or skips tracks: check that the files are in the station library and assigned to an active playlist. Merely placing files in the media directory is not enough for automatic playback.
- A DJ cannot connect: verify the streamer account’s settings and compatible broadcast software. If the station is behind a reverse proxy, check whether the required broadcaster ports are reachable; some proxy services block direct broadcaster connections.
- The AzuraCast station plays, but YouTube does not: station playout and YouTube distribution are separate. Check the relay’s audio input, video signal, YouTube event and ingest configuration, and network path. A working mount point alone does not establish a working video livestream.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: check YouTube’s notice and the relevant rights documentation. Third-party matches can trigger interruptions, including when licensed content is not allowlisted for the channel.
- The channel cannot start an encoder livestream: check verification and whether a live-stream restriction occurred in the preceding 90 days, as well as YouTube’s current account requirements.
Budget and maintenance realistically
AzuraCast itself is free server-based software, but operating it on a VPS or dedicated machine is not cost-free by definition. Compare hosting or equipment cost, library storage, backup arrangements, maintenance time, security responsibilities, and your ability to monitor and restore service. The documentation reviewed does not supply benchmark costs, server sizing, uptime figures, or a recommended hardware build, so estimate those from your own workload and provider quotes rather than assuming a universal monthly figure.

A self-hosted setup also leaves you responsible for coordinating the radio station, relay, and YouTube destination. If you need a live DJ, that adds a broadcaster-to-Liquidsoap path to configure and test; it does not replace the separate YouTube relay.
