For a 24/7 YouTube music stream, calculate two things separately: the sustained upload speed needed to send the feed, and the monthly data it will use. Choose video bitrate from YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate; add audio bitrate, then allow headroom for network overhead and other traffic. For data, use this rule: each 1 Mbps sent continuously uses about 324 GB (decimal) in 30 days. These calculations apply in India as anywhere else; the ISP plan you need depends on the upload performance and data terms available at your address.
Bandwidth means upload capacity and monthly data
When planning a continuous stream, “bandwidth” can mean either the rate of data sent at a given moment or the total volume sent over time. The first is measured in Mbps; the second in GB or TB. A connection can have enough upload speed but an unsuitable data cap, or ample data allowance but unstable upload capacity.
- Upload capacity: the stream’s total outgoing bitrate, plus room for transport overhead, fluctuations and other devices or workloads using the connection.
- Monthly data: the total amount transmitted during the hours the stream is live. This depends on the configured bitrate and duration.
These calculations concern the creator’s feed sent to YouTube. YouTube transcodes a submitted live stream into different output formats for viewers, so you do not add viewers’ playback traffic to your upload estimate. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and recommendations.
Choose the video bitrate for your actual stream settings
YouTube’s recommended video bitrate depends on the ingestion codec, resolution and frame rate—not on whether the content is music. The following are YouTube’s recommended video bitrates; they are encoder-input recommendations, not a measured broadband speed or a guarantee of a particular visual result.

| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
The full YouTube settings table also includes minimum bitrate recommendations. For a broadcast with static artwork or a simple visual, select the format deliberately and use the recommendation for that format; music does not make the video portion use zero bandwidth. YouTube says HEVC can provide 25%–50% more data compression than H.264 at the same video quality, but the result for a particular encoder and music visual depends on the content and implementation. Treat that range as context, not a guaranteed saving. Details are in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Add audio to get the stream’s total bitrate
YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio or 384 Kbps 5.1 audio. Its listed sample rates are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1. Convert Kbps to Mbps before adding: 128 Kbps is 0.128 Mbps, and 384 Kbps is 0.384 Mbps. The resulting video-plus-audio rate is a baseline for upload planning, not the full connection allowance.

For example, 1080p30 H.264 at the recommended 14 Mbps video rate plus 128 Kbps stereo audio totals 14.128 Mbps before network overhead. The upload connection needs sustained capacity above that baseline, with additional room for overhead and any competing traffic. YouTube’s other recommended settings include CBR encoding, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, two-second keyframes (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS. Consult the current YouTube settings page when configuring the encoder.
Estimate data use for a 30-day month
For a continuous stream, multiply its total bitrate in Mbps by 324 GB per 30 days, using decimal gigabytes. The conversion follows from 30 days of seconds, converting bits to bytes and decimal gigabytes: 1 Mbps Ă— 2,592,000 seconds Ă· 8 Ă· 1,000,000,000 = 324 GB. It is arithmetic, not a YouTube or ISP usage statistic.

| Example stream | Approximate total bitrate | Estimated data for 30 uninterrupted days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 AV1/H.265 video (6 Mbps) + stereo audio (0.128 Mbps) | 6.128 Mbps | 1,985.472 GB, about 1.99 TB decimal |
| 1080p30 H.264 video (14 Mbps) + stereo audio (0.128 Mbps) | 14.128 Mbps | 4,577.472 GB, about 4.58 TB decimal |
| 5 Mbps continuous stream | 5 Mbps | About 1.62 TB decimal |
| 10 Mbps continuous stream | 10 Mbps | About 3.24 TB decimal |
| 15 Mbps continuous stream | 15 Mbps | About 4.86 TB decimal |
The first two examples multiply video-plus-audio bitrate by 324 and omit network encapsulation overhead. A 10 Mbps stream’s 3,240 decimal GB is about 3,017 GiB if an ISP reports binary units. Real usage can differ with configured bitrate, overhead, interruptions or reconnects, and any duplicate feed. A simultaneous backup ingestion or additional destination adds outbound traffic; YouTube’s API describes optional primary and backup ingestion in its live stream documentation.
Turn the bitrate into an upload-speed target
- Set the encoder inputs: choose codec, resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s recommended video bitrate for that combination.
- Add audio: include the selected stereo or 5.1 audio bitrate to establish the total stream rate.
- Allow headroom: plan for protocol overhead, rate variation and other traffic sharing the connection. Do not treat the stream’s nominal bitrate as the full capacity requirement.
- Measure upload performance: run a speed test and check the upload result, not just download speed. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast.
- Test at operating settings: run the intended encoder configuration with representative audio and visuals, then monitor stream health over time. One speed test cannot establish that a connection will remain stable around the clock.
- Account for every feed: include other network use and calculate each outbound copy separately if you send a backup feed or stream to more than one destination.
- Check the monthly allowance: multiply actual total Mbps by 324 GB for a 30-day estimate, then compare it with your ISP’s cap and metering terms.
YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” Its API documentation describes health status and configuration issues such as low video bitrate, audio problems, or missing audio/video; use available health signals during your test and broadcast. See YouTube’s live stream API documentation.

What to verify with an Indian ISP
The bitrate and data arithmetic are geography-neutral, but the practical connection is not. Upload rates, congestion, data limits and how usage is metered depend on the provider and installation address. No single Indian plan can be recommended without those details. Before choosing a plan, confirm:
- the sustained upload performance available at the exact address, not only the advertised download speed;
- whether upload traffic counts toward the monthly allowance and whether a fair-use policy or cap applies;
- how the provider measures data, including decimal GB versus binary GiB if its meter is unclear;
- the provider’s written service terms, support expectations and service availability; and
- whether the connection remains stable during representative long-duration testing.
Troubleshooting: unstable or unhealthy stream
- Upload is close to the stream total: overhead or competing devices can consume the remaining capacity. Reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution, limit other traffic, and test again at the intended settings.
- Speed test looks good but the stream drops frames: a single test does not show sustained performance. Test with the real audio and visual workload, observe stream health over time, and compare actual encoder output with available upload capacity.
- Monthly data use is higher than expected: check the configured total bitrate, the number of live hours, overhead, reconnects, and whether a second feed or other upload is being sent. Confirm whether the ISP reports GB or GiB.
- YouTube reports a low video bitrate: compare the encoder’s actual output with the recommendation for its codec, resolution and frame rate; verify that the selected settings match the intended stream.
- YouTube reports an audio problem or missing audio/video: check the encoder’s audio and video inputs and their configuration, then retest while monitoring stream health.
