Usually, no—not if you mean changing the video entries in an automated Restream playlist after it has started. Restream says you must add, remove, or reorder playlist videos before the playlist goes live. During playback, its documented editable items are graphics and chat. If you need to play a prerecorded clip during a hosted live show, that is a different workflow from editing the playlist itself.
What “add a video while live” can mean
There are two distinct operations that can sound alike:
- Change an automated loop playlist: insert, remove, or reorder files in the playlist that is already broadcasting.
- Play a clip in a live production: a host or operator shares a prerecorded video during a show, without changing the underlying playlist used to run an automated broadcast.
The answer depends on which operation you need. Restream’s documentation says its playlist entries cannot be changed once the playlist is airing. A hosted production tool can provide a separate way to play prerecorded clips during a live show.
Restream: prepare the playlist before it starts
Restream’s playlist guide says you can add, remove, and rearrange videos before going live. Once playback begins, the guide lists graphics and chat as the elements you can edit; it does not document adding or replacing playlist videos midstream.

That makes the playlist a scheduled or automated prerecorded broadcast, not a live-editable video queue. If you realize a file is missing, or need a different order, the documented approach is to correct the playlist before it airs. The guide does not establish a way to hot-add a file after the stream starts.
Restream playlist limits and plan details
Restream’s guide reviewed in 2026 states that a playlist can contain up to 40 video entries and run for up to 24 hours. It also says playlists require a paid Upload & Stream add-on tier. The same guide listed Marathon at $79/month with a 4-hour video library and 1080p maximum resolution, and Media at $239/month with a 12-hour library and 4K maximum resolution. These are vendor-listed figures from the 2026 guide, not guaranteed current prices; check Restream’s current plan details before subscribing.

Restream’s Upload & Stream overview describes scheduling prerecorded files as live events, making playlists, and replaying a scheduled video up to 10 times. That describes scheduling and repeat playback; it does not establish that playlist entries can be changed during an active broadcast.
If you need to play a clip during a hosted live show
StreamYard documents sharing long-form prerecorded video during a live stream or event and queuing multiple videos to play like a playlist. Its help article covers that hosted-production workflow. It is useful when an operator wants to introduce clips as part of a show, but it does not show that StreamYard can alter an already-airing Restream playlist.

In other words, choose a live-production workflow when a host needs to control what viewers see during the show. Choose an automated playlist when the goal is scheduled prerecorded playback—and prepare its video entries in advance. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes transmission to a bound live broadcast and broadcast-state behavior around starting and stopping transmission; it does not document a command for dynamically adding playlist items.
Check copyright before you stream or replay a video
YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; the stream can be interrupted or terminated if the content remains or a relevant strike applies. For licensed third-party content, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself does not guarantee uninterrupted playback if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Confirm that your rights cover both live use and any replay or archived copy. If a rights holder has licensed the material, ask whether Content ID allowlisting is needed for the channel that will stream it.
