Rick Davies, Supertramp’s co-founder, singer, songwriter and pianist, died on September 6, 2025, aged 81. The band said he had been living with multiple myeloma for more than a decade. His death was announced publicly on September 8.

What happened to Rick Davies?

Supertramp announced Davies’s death in an official tribute, saying he died on Saturday, September 6, after battling multiple myeloma for more than 10 years. The statement gave his age as 81. The announcement and news reports followed on September 8.

The band remembered Davies for his soulful vocals and distinctive Wurlitzer keyboard playing, calling them the “heartbeat” of its sound. His voice and piano were central to Supertramp’s identity even as the group’s best-known songs were written and sung across its principal songwriting partnership.

How did Davies shape Supertramp’s sound?

Davies formed Supertramp with Roger Hodgson in 1969. The two shared songwriting credits, but that credit did not mean every song was written jointly: songs were generally written by one or the other. The Guardian describes Davies’s voice as grittier than Hodgson’s lighter, high tenor, a contrast that helped give the band’s songs distinct character.

Davies’s performance and writing are associated with “Goodbye Stranger” and “Bloody Well Right.” Hodgson was closely associated with other major songs, including “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home” and “Give a Little Bit.” Supertramp’s catalogue reflects both musicians; it would be misleading to suggest Davies sang every hit. The Associated Press describes him as a co-writer with Hodgson, while the band’s tribute highlights Davies as a singer and Wurlitzer player.

How did Supertramp’s career develop?

From early albums to breakthrough

Davies was born in Swindon, England, in 1944. Supertramp’s official tribute recalls that hearing Gene Krupa’s “Drummin’ Man” as a child helped set off his enduring interest in music. He began as a drummer, later taught himself piano and played in early groups. In 1969 he advertised for musicians in Melody Maker; Hodgson answered, and the pair formed Supertramp.

The group’s first two albums, Supertramp (1970) and Indelibly Stamped (1971), did not sell well, according to The Guardian’s obituary. Its breakthrough came with Crime of the Century (1974), featuring “Dreamer” and “Bloody Well Right.” The band followed it with Crisis? What Crisis? (1975) and Even in the Quietest Moments… (1977), which produced the US hit “Give a Little Bit.”

Breakfast in America and the band’s peak

Breakfast in America (1979) was Supertramp’s major international success. The Guardian reports that it spent six weeks at the top of the US chart and estimates worldwide sales at 20 million copies. The Associated Press reports that it topped charts in the United States and Canada, won two Grammys and sold more than 18 million copies. Those are differently reported estimates; neither should be presented as a settled exact worldwide total.
