Downton Abbey is fictional and set in Yorkshire, but its best-known real-life setting is Highclere Castle in Hampshire. You can also visit the Oxfordshire village of Bampton, Cogges Manor Farm and other filming locations around Britain. They are separate places with different access arrangements—not one single Downton attraction.
Where was Downton Abbey filmed?
The Crawley family’s great house is represented by Highclere Castle in Hampshire, near Newbury. The series also used locations across Britain for the fictional village, farms, London residence and railway station. The show’s Yorkshire setting is not a single real village or estate you can visit.
What house is used in Downton Abbey?
Highclere Castle, Hampshire
Highclere is the principal real-life house associated with Downton Abbey. VisitBritain says it appeared as Downton in all six television series and the first two films; Visit Hampshire says it returned for the third film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. Highclere is not open year-round as a conventional museum. Its official visitor information for 2026 lists different tours through the year, with most requiring advance booking. A ticket is required for the castle, gardens and grounds, so check the official date and ticket listings before making the trip.

The castle’s current access guidance says the State Rooms and exhibition are accessible to manual wheelchairs, while the Upstairs Gallery is reached by a long, steep staircase. Check Highclere’s visitor information directly if you have specific mobility or access needs.
Is Downton Abbey a real place?
No: Downton Abbey and the Yorkshire village in the story are fictional. The following real places supplied settings for the series and films, but they are separate destinations with their own admission and opening arrangements.

Bampton, Oxfordshire: the village
Bampton’s streets and historic buildings portray the fictional village. Church Green served as the village square; Churchgate House was Crawley House; St Mary’s Church became the village church; and the former Grammar School building doubled as the hospital. Bampton also appears in The Grand Finale. Visit England’s Downton Abbey filming-location guide and VisitBritain’s guide identify the locations.
Bampton works as a village walk rather than a ticketed studio tour. You can view locations from public streets, but do not assume that a building used in filming is open to enter. Follow signs and respect each site’s own access rules.

Cogges Manor Farm, Oxfordshire: Yew Tree Farm
Cogges Manor Farm portrayed Yew Tree Farm. Visit England describes a self-guided tour of key filming locations, a video about the farm’s transformation for the series, memorabilia and farm animals. Consult the Visit England filming-location guide and check Cogges Manor Farm’s official site for current admission and opening dates before visiting.
Basildon Park, Berkshire: Grantham House
The National Trust property Basildon Park represented Grantham House, the Crawleys’ London residence, in the television series and also features in The Grand Finale. It is a separate trip from Highclere and Bampton; there is no single ticket covering these sites. Check the National Trust’s Basildon Park page for current opening and admission details.

Other Downton Abbey locations to add to a trip
- Horsted Keynes Station, West Sussex: VisitBritain identifies this Bluebell Railway station as fictional Downton Station. See VisitBritain’s location guide and check the railway’s own visitor information before travelling.
- Claydon House, Buckinghamshire: The National Trust identifies the house as Petersfield House in The Grand Finale. Check the National Trust’s Claydon page for visitor details.
- Lacock, Wiltshire: The National Trust lists Lacock as a location in series six and the 2019 film. Its Lacock visitor page has current access information.
These are optional extensions, not substitutes for the main house, village and farm locations. As Liz Trubridge, producer of Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, put it: “No Downton Abbey is complete without visiting beautiful country homes.” The National Trust attributes the statement in its Basildon Park visitor information.

How to plan a Downton Abbey locations visit
- Choose the experience you want. Highclere is a country-house visit; Bampton is a village walk; Cogges is a working-farm attraction; and Basildon Park is a National Trust property.
- Check each venue separately. Review Highclere’s official visitor and ticket pages, and consult the official sites for Cogges and the National Trust properties for dates, admission terms and accessibility.
- Book before travelling where required. Highclere says most of its tours require prebooking. Confirm availability and arrangements for every other site directly rather than assuming an attraction is open on your chosen day.
- Build a route around geography. Highclere is in Hampshire, Bampton and Cogges are in Oxfordshire, and Basildon Park is in Berkshire. Treat them as distinct stops, not one walkable estate.
- Respect boundaries at village locations. Some filming buildings are private or have their own entry rules; viewing from a public street does not guarantee access inside.
