For a 24/7 YouTube bhajan stream on a limited connection, start with 720p at 30 frames per second, H.264 video at 3,000 kbps, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, AAC audio, and RTMPS where your encoder supports it. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as the minimum H.264 video bitrate for 720p—not as a guarantee that a connection with 3 Mbps upload can carry the stream reliably. Its guidance recommends keeping 20% upload capacity in reserve, which means at least 3.75 Mbps of stable, otherwise-unused upload for a 3 Mbps stream.
What settings should you use for 720p?
Use these as a starting configuration in your encoder. YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate guidance gives 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60. For a constrained connection, begin at the minimum and choose 30 fps; if tests remain unstable, reduce resolution rather than treating a speed-test result as proof of continuous capacity. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the data sent to its servers. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported audio codecs; AAC is the straightforward choice for this setup. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance
How much upload speed do you actually need?
YouTube’s streaming tips state, “The total bitrate of your streams cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” The service also recommends 20% upload headroom. Apply that margin to the encoder bitrate: 3 Mbps ÷ 0.8 = 3.75 Mbps of stable upload capacity available to the stream. This is a minimum implied by that margin, not a promise of reliability. - Check upload performance at the location and time you will stream. A short speed test does not show whether capacity will remain stable around the clock.
- Allow additional capacity for phones, cloud backups, security cameras, or other devices uploading on the same connection.
- If you configure a backup encoder, budget for the primary and backup bitrates together, then add the 20% margin. YouTube recommends this margin in addition to the combined primary and backup stream bitrates.
- A static devotional image may involve less visual motion than camera footage, but do not assume it will lower the configured bitrate or remove the need to test with the real program.
For a 3 Mbps primary and a 3 Mbps backup, for example, reserve at least 7.5 Mbps of otherwise-available upload for both streams under the same 20% headroom calculation: (3 + 3) ÷ 0.8. Add capacity for other concurrent uploads.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Confirm livestream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a stream configuration as including ingestion type, stream URLs, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube LiveStreams API documentation
- Copy the stream URL and key into your encoder. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use the stream URL and key shown for that YouTube stream rather than sharing the key publicly.
- Set the encoder values. Choose 1280 × 720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, 3,000 kbps video, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC audio. Use RTMPS if it is available in the encoder.
- Run a realistic test. Test the actual bhajan audio and visuals at the intended settings. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages, and listen and watch for interruptions or quality problems. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event; these checks are useful before relying on a continuous stream, too. - Plan what happens after an interruption. Decide how your audio and visuals loop, and how the encoder will be restarted after a computer, power, or network failure. YouTube’s guidance stresses connectivity and monitoring; it does not promise that your setup will restart itself or remain uninterrupted.
Protect the music and recordings before going live
Confirm that you have the necessary rights to broadcast each recording and performance. A devotional subject does not by itself make a recording free to rebroadcast. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if the identified content remains. Even when you hold a licence, a stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and address any Content ID arrangements with the rights holder before broadcasting.
Plan for a full archive separately
A 24/7 stream runs past YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive for a complete record of continuous programming. If keeping the full broadcast matters, make a separate local recording. Confirm that it is actively growing during the stream and calculate storage from the recording bitrate and the retention period you need. An external hard drive or SSD can provide local storage, but it does not protect a recording from device, power, or network failures by itself.
Troubleshoot a weak or interrupted stream
