To switch OBS scenes automatically as a church service moves from slides to sermon video, connect presentation software to OBS through OBS WebSocket and map each live content type to a scene. A documented example is Church Presenter’s integration. Adding a video as an OBS Media Source handles playback, but does not by itself make OBS switch scenes when the presentation changes.
What you need before setting it up
- OBS Studio running on the computer that will produce the YouTube stream.
- Presentation software with an OBS integration that can send scene-switching cues. Church Presenter documents mapping live content types to OBS scenes; that is one documented route, not evidence that every presentation app offers the same feature.
- An OBS scene for each content type you want to show, such as slides and sermon video.
- For a two-computer setup, both computers on the same local network.
Church Presenter’s guide, published July 12, 2026, describes its setup using OBS WebSocket. Follow the values displayed in your own OBS configuration; the guide gives port 4455 as its default example, not a value to assume in every setup. Church Presenter’s connection guide
Connect Church Presenter to OBS and map scenes
- Prepare OBS scenes. In OBS, create and name the scenes you intend to show—for example, “Slides” and “Sermon Video.” Add the appropriate sources to each scene.
- Enable the OBS WebSocket server. Open OBS’s WebSocket server settings, enable the server, and note the host, port, and password shown there. Keep the password private.
- Enter the connection details in Church Presenter. In Church Presenter’s OBS settings, use
localhostwhen OBS and Church Presenter run on the same computer. If they run on separate computers, enter the OBS computer’s local IP address; both devices must be on the same local network. - Map each content type to an OBS scene. For example, map presentation slides to the “Slides” scene and video to “Sermon Video.” Use the exact scene names you created in OBS.
- Check the connection and mappings. Confirm Church Presenter indicates a connection, then verify that each content type points to the intended scene. In the documented integration, a content type without a mapping leaves OBS on its currently active scene.
- Run through the service sequence before going public. Advance through the slides and video cues you expect to use and watch OBS. If a switch does not happen, check the connection details, network, scene names, and mapping before starting the public stream.

Set up sermon video playback separately
Scene switching and video playback are different jobs. In OBS, add a local video file to the scene where it should appear using a Media Source. OBS’s Media Source settings include looping, restarting playback when the source becomes active, and hiding the source when playback ends. Choose settings to fit how the service will use the clip; a sermon video that should play once generally should not be set to loop. OBS documents these playback controls in its Media Sources guide.

The presentation integration provides the cue to change scenes; the Media Source provides the video. Adding a file as a Media Source alone does not connect presentation cues to OBS scene changes.
When you need a capture card
A capture card is optional if the video you need is an external HDMI signal that OBS must receive. OBS lists capture cards among its source types in the Sources Guide. It is not required for the software-driven scene switching described above, and a capture card by itself does not automate scene changes.

What other presentation software documentation establishes
Proclaim’s official support material describes configuring slides, a pastor video, or both in a stream using OBS. That establishes a way to send those visuals through OBS; it does not establish content-driven automatic OBS scene switching. Troubleshoot missed or incorrect scene changes
- OBS does not connect: Recheck the host, port, and password against OBS’s WebSocket settings. For a two-computer setup, make sure you entered the OBS computer’s local IP address and that both computers are on the same local network.
- The wrong scene appears: Compare the scene names in OBS with the content-type mappings in Church Presenter. Correct the mapping and test the same cue again.
- OBS stays on its current scene: Check whether the live content type has a mapping. An unmapped type leaves the active scene unchanged in the documented Church Presenter workflow.
- The scene switches but the video does not play as expected: Check the Media Source’s file and playback settings, including whether it should restart when active, loop, or hide at the end. Scene switching does not replace those playback controls.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream checks
Before streaming recorded sermons, music, or other video, make sure the church has the rights or permissions needed for the material, including any music or third-party footage. The setup guides cited here do not establish YouTube’s current rules for copyright, reused content, or live-stream eligibility. Check YouTube’s current policies for your content and account before broadcasting; do not assume that owning a recording or showing it in a church service automatically clears every right for a public stream.
